Talking about the WW1 style... at this point I would remind you that this show takes place, albeit in an alternate universe, in the same year as WW1 begins (1914).
Something worth pointing out about Hughes' death, he may have figured the deal with the countrywide transmutation circle but he was marked for death before that. He was the only expendable person in the room Bradley visited. The other three, Ed, Al and Armstrong are all capable alchemists and were potential sacrifices. Hughes was the only one that both knew too much and had no use for the plan. Cold af.
