You can improve the Airzound by screwing it on bigger bottle with the same thread pattern, for example here in Germany a 1 or 1.5l Coke/Sprite/Fanta bottle. They not just hold more air so you're able to use it more, they're thicker as well so you can get higher pressures so it's even louder. It's very helpful for situations where car drivers don't pay enough attention. That said, I'm glad I can whistle VERY loudly without needing the fingers, that never runs out of pressure. Many drivers have confirmed that they have in fact heard that whistling in their cocooned metal boxes which get even more cocooned in the years to come...
Unnecessary when you get the real version of the Airzound with an aluminum bottle. I don't know why they changed it at some point but I feel like my metal version is far superior over any possible plastic bottle.
All I want for Christmas is more Berm Peak. (Cognative MTB shipping is $30 so this is roughly a pair of socks, except it all goes to the creator and is something else I want.)
I came across Air Zound's air horn in the 90's - Still have it... Great product! Best thing about an air horn that loud is when you are on the road, sometimes, a car comes up behind you and honks, just to mess with you. I usually wait until the car is just in front of me - then honk back. I makes them jump, and we all end up laughing. It is way to loud for warning joggers on the trail, but amazing to get the attention of someone in a vehicle that can't see you. Never forget, that a horn is not going to save you - react first, get out of harms way, then honk, if needed. They used a thicker plastic bottle in the 90's, I always used to run 100 PSI. After about twenty years the hose developed a leak and needed to be replaced. I have replaced the bottle a few times as well. The version I have did not come with a strap - it takes up bottle cage real-estate.
Believe me you cannot yell as loud as this horn. I have gotten attention of truckers on a dump truck without a muffler stopping them from right hooking me. I also saw a biker get run over by a truck turning in front of us and in spite of several of us screaming he kept going. (before I had the air sound)
@@chadfren I used to yell, whistle and bang on cars trying to squeeze me. Using the horn has a very different effect. People think it's a car so immediately brake and look around. I use it 3-5 times a day, never as a warning but always to save myself from getting hit and exclusively against motor vehicles. Greatest addition to my bike when biking in the city.
Was going to write basically exactly that. I had one about 20 years ago when biking a lot in the city (before they had a lot of separated paths). Cars and trucks would definitely hear it and react, but not know that it was me (which is handy for avoiding any altercations). It would have been nice if there was a pressure gauge on it, to know when it was low. Definitely saved my ass more than once.
"And it is locked to the tailgate, this thing, you cannot get it off without unlocking it. Unless you grab a scissor, then you could cut this." Seth you are so subtlely hilarious with how you deliver things and edit them. Also just ordered a copy of Goodnight Bikes--congrats on the release of your book!
The goodnight bikes is so adorable! We need more stuff like this to get kids into biking and make it an art form that kids think about and love rather than just a toy.
My son loves the book, it's becoming our nightly story. He can't help but point and gasp at the bikes on every page. Thanks Seth you did great and looking forward to more to come.
I'm just glad we can finally acknowledge that reading to kids about things may influence their behaviour and attitudes towards those things. Now whatever you do don't apply that logic to a bloke in a dress reading to kids about questionable subjects or you'll be breaking UA-cam's ToS 😂
Those boa strings are really strong. I saw my friends boa snowboard boots. Apparently it is a parachute grade kevlar string, the ratchet will break before the string, at that point you will have blood flow problems in your feet.
If it's Boa brand, then yes, very durable....so much so, I'd worry about it wearing into the seat rails or frame. Boa has excellent free (not even a shipping cost) replacements for their dials, not sure about the cord. I've never heard of anyone needing a cord replacement.
I've been using BOA systems on my work boots for years now, never looked back to regular laces. No dangly bits that can get caught while climbing scaffolding, quick tie down and higher pressure possible.
I have a pair of shoes with BOA system where the string broke, but they come with a lifetime guarantee and their support website makes it really easy to order the replacement set by basically doing 20 Questions about the system (is it on a shoe? On top or the side? Does the dial have a hole in it?) and you're getting to exactly the right system in no time.
My Silca seat pack with the boa has been rock solid since it's a plastic coated cable on the boa reel. I can get, two cO2 canisters,c02 inflator, dyna plug racer, extra dyna plugs, multitool, patch kit, tire lever and valve core tool in there with ease
I used to use the Airzound when I was commuting to work in suburban Maryland (worst place I've ever ridden for bike safety by far). I think there's a good chance it saved me a couple hospital visits. Cars would think they were about to hit another car and would always actually pay attention, swerve away from me, or stop. Thing is great.
9:48 those drops coming off the squeeze filter into your bottle, from a bad source, could make you very sick. Have to be careful not to cross-contaminate. Don’t hold it directly over your water bottle or at least make sure you mostly dry the squeeze pouch off on your clothes or something.
Definitely for emergency use. Way too expensive for daily use. That said, I no longer carry liquid electrolyte beverages; just tablets I can drop in my (or any) water.
This channel is the reason why I bought my kids $500 spawn mountain bikes instead of $100 Walmart specials. It’s also why I bought a $2500 rocky mountain bike instead of an el cheapo.
I have the AirZound. It works fine, but the trouble is in any situation where you might want to use it, you are far safer keeping both your hands on the grips and covering your brake levers. Some electronic horns have a small remote button that you can position under your thumb, but the electronic ones are not as loud.
All that "dropper post friendly" means, is that there's not a strap of any sort wrapped around the seat post that prohibits the dropper from going down all the way. Wedge type saddle bags usually have a strap around the seat post and if you run your dropper all the way down, it mangles the strap a bit. And if there's a buckle involved, it's worse.
Yup. I've got two bags (each so old I wouldn't trust them to keep a valued tool on the bike) that are meant to strap to the seatpost. Also, one rear rack that has a clamp too narrow to go around even an old skinny-post seat tube; it must be designed to clamp onto the seat-post... I wouldn't trust 5 pounds on it! Dropper posts introduced a whole new slide-point, to pack around! I intensely dislike a "wiggly" saddle, so I can't yet afford to put a sturdy dropper on each bike. I will eventually. When I do, more than one bag will need a rethink...
For water filtration I can highly reccomend the Sawyer squeeze mini. It lasts for 400'000l/100'000 gallons and screws to any standart plastic bottle. So when something punctures, you can just use any other bottle.
8:34 Is that in the background the new Moonlander with 24"x6.2" overfat tires? I am curious to hear more about those. As I am riding recumbents and the available recumbent fat bike "only" goes to 26"x5", these tires are another reason why I might get a custom one in the future. (with the specific upcoming carbon rims from Nextie 🤪)
As a cyclist of the normal and moto variety, that air horn is ridiculous but definitely useful. Having a bigger horn on the bike is great for getting people to _actually stop merging into you_ instead of just kinda looking around wondering what that sound was. Also a friend of mine in college put one on his longboard, which while definitely rude was absolutely hilarious 😂 That book is adorable by the way, and props for getting something to rhyme with stanchion! (I'm partial to bronze, but gold's good too)
As someone with IBD and IBS, a portable trowel is a must, and honestly is something I should have gotten sooner, I’ll be looking into that shovel or something similar.
There's plenty of "simulated lunar surface" to lend such layouts appeal, but watch out while using them on terrains of greater gravitational acceleration!
I have to say I have the Cache with the seats. It works with seat attached. You just need an enduro bike for it to work, which luckily me and my wife ride an enduro bike pretty much everywhere lol.
I ordered two copies of your book. One for my niece who will be three soon and one for my boss’s son. It’s a good book for young children and my way of supporting what you do.
I bought an air horn just like than back in 2012 on my bike tour across Canada. Easily in the top 3 best bang for buck non-essential accessories. I topped it off to around 100psi every day for the 3 months and it was super loud, way louder than it seems on this video.
I used to use the AirZound horn as my primary bike horn. I pressurized the canister to 140psi before without issue, but I'd recommend against that for safety reasons. I unfortunately broke mine, but I can just decided to stem mount one of my large truck/train horns to my stem cap. I can also mount the horns with the compressor in my bike trailer.
Diggin on that Airhorn, I use one in LA…finally painted the white parts and moved it to the side for instant access oh yeah! Pump it up to whatever you think is Max. A guy in Canada posted a video about it during the pandemic, I do love it, bought it awhile ago and I think it went up in price.
After some close calls, I got an airzound and they're phenomenal. Now have one on each bike. If you want a cheaper source, check out fishing/boating shops - seriously. My first ones had metal cans which are rated to 100 PSI. The later plastic ones are only 80 PSI. They do leak down over a few weeks too, and an anemic 'parp' does nothing to help you.
If an Airzound filling lasts a few weeks you're not riding enough... 😜 Mine lasted a max of 10-15 km in Hamburg (northern Germany, not those dinky towns in Ontario or whatever which are called Hamburg as well 😜 ), but now I have learned how to whistle *very* loudly without needing fingers so unlimited attention grabbing instead. 😁
I do exactly that to lock them in my truck bed, have a 6 foot security cable with an outdoor rated master lock on both ends attached to the tie downs to lock my bikes up for travel.
I thought of an idea for a lightweight cheap Constantly Variable Transmission for bicycles and am wondering why it hasn't been done, or why it would not work. My idea: Take the front sprocket laser cut it into quarters. Then a person could use a hydraulic system similar to the ones used for brakes to expand the radius of the front sprocket. You could combine two chains side by side. Then you could place a second sprocket beside the first but offset 45 degrees. So that as the sprockets expand there is minimal gap. Using technology from a helicopter squash plate and rotor assembly which pretty basic, to hydraulically expand and contract the sprocket assembly, increasing and decreasing its radius/gear ratio.
I had to LOL a bit at the pooper shovel. If I were gearing up to that level of preparedness I'd rather have a lightweight survival knife or a small machete-type multi tool so I could do much more than dig holes. And double-LOL at the poop depth gage! LOL!
I’ve been messing with the pureclear filter flask on bike packing trips. It filters out so much more than the befree/lifestraw flasks and is pretty cost-effective compared to the competition. Only downsides so far are filters are changed after 200L and the bite valve design could be better.
I used to have the metal airzound in Sydney. Worked perfectly. I prefer having cycling infrastructure and respect on the road more, though. Now living in Germany.
06:20 More and more outdoor recreation places human waste has become a problem that you're actually supposed to pack it out with you. Burying doesn't work anymore for a lot of places.
Regarding the poop kit. In back country travel, like backpacking the TP should be hauled out. Reason, animal may dig all of that up. In heavily used trail systems like the Pacific Crest Trail, there are so many hikers that human waste is a real issue. I switched to a back country bidet attachment for a water bottle with soap and sanitizer, no TP needed. When your back packing hundreds or thousands of miles you want to carry as little as you can get away with.
8:18 Mycelium tablets? I thought that they'd be anaerobic bacteria. What fungal mycelium are they including? Surely it's not still alive in that compressed tablet form. And if it were still alive, I certainly hope that it's a species native almost everywhere. I realize that invasive fungal species are *far* less common than invasive plant species, but. Point is I'm very curious how that part of it is supposed to work.
FYI that Cache Jeffrey Cooler doesn't have clips for a pannier rack mount, in my opinion is a little bit of a missed opportunity, but there are probably other cooler bags that will mount to bicycle rear rack. Cache figured when marketing/designing this that someone who's driving their bikes to a location isn't going to need a luggage rack mounted on their bike, which is fair enough.
Honestly, we never thought of that. The good news is that The Jeffery is getting a full redesign currently. I will bring this up in the next design meeting!
silca have had something like that tool wrap for ages, definitely a boa brand because they have the patent on it, I have run mine on every bike from gravel to downhill and it has never broken, lifetime warranty on the strings which I have taken advantage of when mine wore out after 8 years of use and then I could just replace it myself.
Hi Seth you should look at the Honda ridge line. It has a trunk in the bed. The trunk can be used as an ice chest. It has a drain plug in the bottom so you can fill it with ice. It’s a great idea. I’m planning to put this ice chest in one of my hotrods.
Everybody has carbon fiber bikes now. Me watching this with my Clinton era Giant mountain bike with three chain rings upfront, having just as much fun. i’m glad I bought it used for $500. It came with fox shocks that were worth $600 at the time it was an $1100 bike when purchased new. my mom didn’t nickname me Hymie for nothing

sounds like a lot of extra stuff on the bike when I can just yell
I bought one about a decade ago. It comes with a tin can roughly a pop can size. It doesn't fit a standard bottle cage. Wth!

When your back packing hundreds or thousands of miles you want to carry as little as you can get away with.
You're a little on the gimmicky side Seth! Nah I'm playing. You're still the one! Thanks for the content. 😎
I'm just hoping that 0.000000∞% of them ever survive above 95°F (35°C)...
(Same concern I have with plastic-eaters; ever read The Andromeda Strain?)
I need more moonlander!
Just received my Goodnight Bikes book today.
I’m totally buying that airhorn to scare pedestrians while biking downtown😂
FYI: the airhorn is illegal in NJ and NY. I really want one.
Happy thanksgiving Seth!!
silca have had something like that tool wrap for ages, definitely a boa brand because they have the patent on it, I have run mine on every bike from gravel to downhill and it has never broken, lifetime warranty on the strings which I have taken advantage of when mine wore out after 8 years of use and then I could just replace it myself.
In the Bay Area that cooler inside the car would get bipped super fast 😂. Looks like a nice laptop backpack.
I’ve had the air horn for almost 10 years now. I still have to use it weekly on my commute to work 5:04
The book should include a free audiobook narrated by Seth. I'd buy that.
That tool strap is desirable purely because velcro is really hard to clean when it fills up with mud
I’ve been using the Extract filters with my Specialized bottles with great success.
Just ordered a book for my youngest! Thanks Seth!
Congrats on the 1 million.
Hi Seth you should look at the Honda ridge line. It has a trunk in the bed. The trunk can be used as an ice chest. It has a drain plug in the bottom so you can fill it with ice. It’s a great idea. I’m planning to put this ice chest in one of my hotrods.
Seth just traded in a Honda Ridgeline for that F150 Lightning a little bit ago.
Love the video keep up the amazing work
Everybody has carbon fiber bikes now.
The Airzound is honestly amazing and very well worth the $$$.
Nice vid, Cyrano!
Good value on the book too! I bought one
Seth getting in the festive spirit with his red nose 😂
Thank you, as always, for sharing.
