- On May 22, 1986, the BBC produced an episode in their series called “Singer’s Choice” about Italian baritone Ettore Bastianini. The narrator talks about the baritone’s original studies, his operatic debut as Colline in La boheme, switching from bass to baritone and his death in January of 1967. The listener will hear excerpts from Un ballo in maschera, La forza del destino, Andrea Chewier, La boheme, , Annie Get Your Gun, Il trovatore and a song called “Vieni”.

This is a wonderful tribute to a great artist. Bastianini had a burnished tone of great density and richness with a brilliant top.
A truly magnificent baritone. I was only 22 when he died and I truly miss hearing him in the flesh.Nigel Douglas does the narrative excellently.A unique baritone indeed.
Yes i was also very young when He died, but i had the Chance to Listen to him once at the Opera in Vienna as rodrigo Don Carlos in 1965, one of his last Performance there. I was a Teenager.
Glorious voice, handsome man, his death was a tragedy, sadly I doubt we'll ever see his like again

Thank you for this - thought the previous version was an hour long? Anyway, can't ever get enough of this wonderful baritone - I wish there was a video of him singing 'Eri tu'.

There is one superhuman baritone which is Ruffo. He has no equal.
Then there is the greatest Italian baritones of the recorded era. Bastianini is one of them - he is up there in my top 5: Warren, Stracciari, Bastianini, MacNeil and one more, but I can't decide, no particular order. Bastianini had this wonderful timbre and this dark color and some spectacular high notes.
There was never a voice so beautiful like this.
