    Great video. I don't have a freeze dryer. You are the first person I've ever seen demonstrate (or even mention) the fact it can be used as a chamber vacuum sealer. That's a cool feature. I have most of the other products you mention.

    With bags of flavor "cubes & the like, if you use a large enough bag, try separating them from each other before vac sealing the rest. That way, they are easy to get out of the bag 1 or 2 at a time. Nothing sticks together that way.
    Also, I cut bags larger than I need to start with, and then I open them right under the seal line. The bag gradually gets smaller, but I keep reusing them till there's nothing left. I wash them in hot, soapy water, rinse well with hor water & finally, I rinse with straight vinegar & a quick hot water rinse again. Maybe a bit of overkill, but it makes me feel more confident reusing my bags. I put an extra shower curtain pole across the back of our shower w/ clip type hooks to hang the bags upside down from a corner. I store them in a plastic storage box in my pantry marked used bags. My only rule is to never reuse bags that had raw chicken in them.
    Good luck & God bless you and yours 🙏🙏🙏

      @foodprepguide you're welcome. Sorry it got so long winded. Also meant to mention to remember to be careful opening your canned jars, so that reusing those lids for dry storage is possible. A real money saver.

    The For Jars sealer comes with the wide and regular mouth sealers plus a hand held pump (similar to a bike tire pump but much smaller) that fits on the top of the sealers. This allows you to seal jars without relying on the grid. There is a small learning curve but not much different than with the brake bleeder and it also requires both hands. It is more affordable than just the food saver lids for the entire off-grid package. My pick of all the sealers. Thanks for the informative video.

    Great info! The handheld jar sealer pump on my Food Saver stopped working, so I bought a brake bleeder. It works well, but it slips around on my counter while I'm trying to pump, so I switched to the small battery-powered one that you showed. It stopped sealing the wide mouth jars, so I'll check the seal position as you suggested.

    What an education in a jar. I have a very nice expensive foodsaver vacuum sealer I purcased a few years ago and used it quite a bit in the beginning then realized for my small kitchen it was taking up to much counter space so I stuck it in a cabinet and forgot about it. I have been dehydrating a lot of foods lately and want to be able to vacuum seal foods in jars and bags without having to take out my big machine so I ordered an all in one handheld vacuum sealer similar to the one you are demonstrating. Thank you for the tips. Since I live in a small home I don't have cabinet space for a lot of jars so dehydrating is going to be my preferred method of preserving foods I grow. Do these jar vacuum sealers work on regular jar lids or only mason jar lids?

I end up buying small vacuum sealed handheld like you have. I love that. I don't know if it'll work if I bought those bags with the seal on it but I'm going to try it that is so cool I like that

    What happens when the electrical grid goes down, perhaps permanently?

    I purchased a Food Saver bag suction machine 4 days ago.
    I also found an item called “Wevac 11” x 150’ Food Vacuum Seal Roll Keeper with Cutter.”
    It is a cardboard box with a large roll. I know the bags by themselves are less expensive but I am liking the convenience of this box with cutter.
    I also bought the Food Saver Wide-Mouth Jar Sealer kit and brake bleeder pump.
    I think the brake bleeder pump will vacuum seal jars quicker than the electric gadgets
    I like making things, especially of wood. I think I will attempt to make a stand to hold the bleeder pump so it is stable when using it.
    I sold my home in California 3 years ago (had about 3/4 acre) and moved to Texas. The next challenge for me, now living in the desert, is trees. I want fruit trees (an easy thing to grow in CA soil)
    Great video!
    Finally
    “Did I put the lid on?” LOL

    I was vacuum sealing jars yesterday with my new food saver and I discovered that the handheld device on my food saver machine can be split in half. The bottom section can come off and it exposes a small nipple that can be inserted into the hole of the jar sealer (hope that makes sense).

    Some of the vac machines have a cutting blade.
    There are various manufacturers for Option #4
    Question: since you put in empty jars and one almost full how do you know you are getting a complete seal on all jars vs an uneven seal on some?

      I don’t think that’s an issue with the freeze dryer method as the vacuum is so strong. But I’m not sure if there’s a way to prove or disprove that. 🤷‍♀️

    I think one of the biggest contributed to child obesity, along with false information provided by the FDA, Who told us cereal is good for children (study "paid for by the cereal manufactures); is taking home EC out of schools! I grew up with 8 brothers and sisters, and my mom and dad had a huge garden, (mom put up 300 quarts of tomato juice, with the tomato pulp, every year), and she made all of our clothes. We all grew up learning how to cook, but I LOVED 7th grade Home Ec, where you learned dry measuring vs wet measuring, and by the end of the term, groups of about 6 students made an assigned meal, including dessert, and set a table, and we sat down, as a little home ec family, to eat the "fruits of our labor"! I remember that time being when I decided all I wanted to "do when I grew up", was to be a wife and mother! I trained to be a secretary, in case I needed a career, and because those skills can be used in your household as well.
    I LOVE cooking for my family, who are all grown and married. I believe making and baking things I know they love, is my love language to them. My health hasn't been good for many years, and because I suffer with severe anemia, I have to pace myself. My children always tell me not to make things, because they would rather spend time visiting, than eating the treats I make and risk me having to rest. It's just not part of my DNA to not make them treats, so I start a couple months ahead, and freeze dough to bake later, or make and freeze their favorite pumpkin or zucchini bread, etc.
    I ended up homeschooling in the 90s, so we could travel with my husband, for his job. My two daughter and two sons all learned to cook, plan meals, write shopping lists, shop for best prices, and to make meals. They learned how to do laundry, and how and what to iron as well. That involves math, organization, planning, science, etc. I believe those skills are more important than many, taught in school!

    • @foodprepguide
      @foodprepguide  2 місяці тому +1

      I wholeheartedly agree! ❤️ Unfortunately, I think the reason why Home Ec no longer exists is because of this statement:
      "I remember that time being when I decided all I wanted to "do when I grew up", was to be a wife and mother!"
      The govt doesn't value family. In fact, they actively seek to dismantle it. Since public schools are govt-funded, Home Ec has no place in their agenda. Sad, but true. I'm so incredibly thankful for the ability to homeschool, so we can pass on these essentials skills to our children! ❤️
      Saying a prayer for your health and strength as you seek to bless your family with homemade goodies. 🙏

    • @ericgeorgetruckgrilling
      @ericgeorgetruckgrilling 2 місяці тому +1

      As a guy I used to love those Home Ec classes not that I took them but the girls would cook or bake something and they would bring it over to the shop classes and we got to eat it. It wasn't always that good, but you know a teenaged boy will eat just about anything!!

    I had a very old FoodSaver machine that died on me so I bought a new one (different manufacturer) that has a built-in accessory device with two different attachments you could put on the end. I had no idea what to do with those attachments because the manual didn't say anything about how to use them so I just attached the hose directly to to jar sealer (I have one just like you). Now, though, I know I can just put the attachment on to seal the jar. Thank you! (that's just a little bit of cringe for being an idiot and not realizing how obvious it was...lol)

    Pro tip- when you cut your bags and seal the first end, you don't need to seal it so high. Just put the bag where the end is right on top of the sealer bar. Also, not sure if this really makes a difference but the textured side is supposed to go down.

    Those hand held vacuum sealers work but don't draw the vacuum that the counter top models can. There may be only about 40 lbs of air pressure holding the lid in place. You shouldn't be able to remove the lid with your finger tips. WIth a really good vacuum seal, there's about 100 lbs of air pressure holding the lid in place. Sellers of vacuum sealing machines don't advertise the vacuum in inches of mercury (for USA). The closer to 30" the better. Most are in the 18"-20" range. With microns (rest of the world), the closer you get to zero, the better. Good ones get down to 5-15 microns.
