    You really do well with shells out there Basia. I used to go shell hunting when I was younger and make models from them, what fun, but never found shells like those hear in Britain.

      Hi Kevin, I was happy to find this area where the beach was very eroded and then the hurricanes stirred up the ocean and the result was piles and piles of great shells for me to dig through!

    That unknown shell is a channeled whelk! Its the rarer cousin of the knobbed and lightning whelk. I'm surprised you've never found one before! I heard they are fairly common on the Outer Banks. Either way a nice specimen on the larger size! I've heard some lightning whelks can get up to 16 inches! I also belive the black rocks may be obsidian! I would try smashing one to see if it breaks into shards.

    • @basiatoday1872
      @basiatoday1872  7 років тому +1

      This was my first channeled whelk that wasn't broken. Outer Banks is northeast of our island. I may try smashing one of those rocks.

      Basia Today oh sorry I don't check it everyday. Is there some reason why seashells fall upon this beach in such abundance?

    • @basiatoday1872
      @basiatoday1872  7 років тому

      Yes, a hurricane out there did this!

      michy 2015 the barrier islands of north Caroline reside where two currents meet. The Labrador from the north and the Gulf Stream from the south. It's basically the same reason sanibel has so many shells. Shells just pile up! Also you can find helmet conchs!

      Hi, bad storms and hurricanes stir up this ocean and the tide delivers piles of shells and other "treasures". Some areas on this island typically are better for shelling than others and you can go way out in ankle deep water and pick as many as you want. Happy Hunting
