@@MinTruenoit's the same feeling i get with Frank Ocean's Pyramids. That song is darn near ten minutes but feels like a 4 minute song. That's how enjoyable it is.
My theory about why this song in particular found success in modern times is that it resurfaced during the time period in music where a single looping chord progression at a modest pace was very dominant in the indie music scene (not the genre indie, but in the literal 'independent' sense). Also, while not a one-progression song, Plastic Love very heavily leans on a derivative of the extremely popular IV-V-iii-vi chord progression that dominates eastern music to this day (you hear it eeeeeeverywhere in Japanese music, especially). It's just one of those songs that came back at the right time where the principles it was written on are back in style. If you listen to the songs that were higher in the popularity charts back in the mid/late 70s and early 80s in Japan, they really don't sound like Plastic Love. Just a thought I have. :)

It is amazing how a single person that you never met can change your life just by uploading a video. This, studying Japanese, is the only accomplishment I made in the last 2 years. It is the only thing that makes me feel good about myself at this stage.
The string line at the turn around of the chorus was sampled in some 90s hip hop but I can’t remember the song… but props the producer for the knowledge of this very hidden gem at the time.
Yamashita has a oldies radio program broadcasted nationwide on Sunday afternoons. Being old-school, he accepts comments not by emails or twitter but by postcards. Because people making comments has to go through that extra inconvenience, I would imagine they would be well thought out, as well as giving the staff less of a job sifting through the static. Being of the same generation as Yamashita, I love that I can sing along with most of the songs on his program. But sometimes he plays gems of the past that I've heard for the first time. Every years end, He invites he wife to do a program with him. It's a rare moment when you can hear the interaction of these two well established artists talk about their daily lives. When asked about how they feel about their sudden rise in fame on internet, they answered that they were puzzled and didn't know what to make of it.

I'm not sure if I have the time anymore to make another video, but this is really inspiring! This means a lot and seeing a lot of these comments really warms my heart. Love y'all! 2023 edit: Jesus christ this video seems to get picked up my the algorithm every so often and it's always exciting to see new people discovering it! I've been seeing a lot of comments ask similar questions so I thought I'd address them here. 1. The anime in the background is Cipher. It was an OVA produced in the 1980s for the Japanese home video market. It's been an in-joke between me and my friends as it has terribly cheesy covers of 80s hit songs and some of the worst English you'll ever hear in an ankle ever. Highly recommend it. 2. I'm aware the song is now on Spotify and I'm supremely happy about it! Listen to it constantly. Crazy to think since this video has come out that it now has a full music video and even charted AGAIN in Japan. This time it charted slightly higher than it originally did in the 80s which I find funny. 3. I know how awkward my voice sounds and I know that I mispronounced Tatsuro Yamashita in the whitest way possible. I cringe every time I hear it now
Hi I just found that video threw the algorithm, I hope to see more amazing high quality content of you, these 8:17 minutes where a pleasure to hear, your voice is really calm, thank you for the video :)
right? hair on point, bow tie, suspenders, with the white button up all in black and white? iconic and very modern compared to what the youth of today are wearing lol (especially when subverting gender norms and stereotypes during that time period)
The song MUST HAVE a 40 episodes Drama serie, about a young girl, i love how sweet and innocente Mariya sounds in the song, it makes it that much more Nostalgic. And we all can relate to that. Story: guy travels accidentally to the past, meets a japanese High school female student in the 80s, we see the culture, places etc from the 80s, (Michael Jackson Bad tour, etc) then he has to come back alone to a future where Vaporwave is the trend, and he kinda moves on with another chick but he misses Mariya, (just the song's character not the actual musician) then Mariya comes to the future but she doesnt recognize him, but they have so much chemistry they fall in love again, representing plastic love as it really is. (Volatile) Then she remembers him from the past. Its a happy ending with Vaporwave, Private caller Saint Pepsi, and of Course Plastic Love, with even extended added Lyrics from Mariya to fit this story.
Sorry but I'd have to disagree, her actual love life is way better. This song was made with her husband Tatsuro Yamashita another extremely popular japanese pop artist.
I have to root for that other chick then, poor soul deserves better than just being a rebound girl for a random protagonist.. . . . . . . . . . Plot twist: that other chick is Mariya's descendant..
@@seandiaz5504 a series with two stories then? the making of the song by mariya and her husband and the story of the girl in the song. that would be very intsresting
Believe it or not I just found out about this song not through UA-cam through Spotify I listen to some Japanese music and the Friday night plans version came on and I’m in love with both versions
I already knew about the first assumption because a friend of mine said so when he stayed at Japan for 4 years but the second and third really blew my mind. You deserve more subs btw!
another really great video!! i can’t believe the quality of what you’ve been putting out; it’s really incredible! i’m loving learning about songs i know very little about and seeing your passion for them. i can’t wait for your next one!
My opinion remains unchanged. I love the song and still listen to it and enjoy it and that's all anyone should really care about. Great video, it was neat hearing about the song's origins.
I have lived in Tokyo for the last 8 years and I can promise you that at a lot of Vinyl shops these days there are "City Pop" labeled sections, so the term is used in Japan as well.
Living in Japan for 2 years, I've never seen any Japanese person who knows the song who is NOT a chronically online young person. most people know about her tho, just not this song
Yeah, but if you refer to it as city pop in Japan, they may have no idea of what you are talking about. They would just call it jpop or "old pop" (I've seen a video of japanese being asked on the streets about city pop, and they had no idea of what it is)
I discovered that there is a Filipino song called "lumayo ka man sa akin" and the singer Rodel Naval go to Japan and heard the Mariya's song "Single again" and he made the song called "lumayo ka man sa akin" both of them are nice the "Single again" and the "Lumayo ka man sa akin"
It’s funny because i only discovered plastic love after listening to a bunch of city pop on soundcloud. I never liked it but it introduced me to a bunch of other city pop songs.
i found plastic love because it got added in an update to taiko no tatsujin on ios. i had no idea there was this much online lore about this song. i was also really confused when i found the near 8 minute youtube video after listening to the original on apple music cus the intro felt a bit too long to me.
Her music is now available in Spotify, but I'm still waiting on other city pop artist such as Meiko Nakahara and Tatsuro Yamashita to be available next.
I've been on a City Funk/ City pop trend for the past 2 years.... And I heard a different redention first and started this trend of listening to disco and 80s music from all different countries (i only know a lot of Mexican classics). Love Mariya's music. Its so easy to find songs that are similar and "what others listen to" and love creating playlists for that
Okay dude I subscribe, Now Give me the Sauce! xD btw bro that's an amazing video, really informational. I never thought that this great song is not as funky as what people in the 80s would want to hear.
I’ve always had a golden rule to not only listen to what’s popular. You discover so many stellar artists just by exploring and it’s genuinely more rewarding. Just about everyone listens to multiple genres, and it’s really difficult to learn all there is to know about the artists from all the genres there are, but just by delving into the unknown you find all sorts of things no one talks about or aren’t well known. It’s a feeling I never get tired of! One of my biggest fears in life is that I won’t be able to listen to all the music that has been or will be. It gnaws at me insatiably and continuously.
I've been very limited to one genre only and just now I'm beginning to understand that it doesn't matter what people think, it's about what you think. I don't know why I've just caught onto this basic fact but that's what being in the metal community does to you I guess
@@profanepropane recently ive been listening a lot to King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard but in terms of metal ive been listening to Demilich, Entombed and Crowbar most.
OK, I will be honest: I cannot fathom the mentality of people who would change their opinion on a song based upon just what you've said here. I care about the song, not about which album it has been released on, what number it was on the charts or what was the cover. And frankly, I feel like people who _would_ change their opinion after that never really liked the song, they just said that because the song was popular.
There was a video where they were asking people on the street in Japan of they know the song, and I think everyone they featured in the video didn't know it Also, regarding the question about my opinion; I thank that video for dropping me into the citypop rabbithole, but I actually prefer Miki Matsubara more :D

I fought back small tears because you know this song is great and not only that but it pushed me to finally study Japanese and I can even speak a bit using a dictionary here and there. It is amazing how a single person that you never met can change your life just by uploading a video. This, studying Japanese, is the only accomplishment I made in the last 2 years. It is the only thing that makes me feel good about myself at this stage.
Hopefully I can go down that bilingual path someday, keep striving Internet stranger!

Hey, I don't know how this video got 50k views in the past month but thank you so much! I really appreciate it. I'm not sure if I have the time anymore to make another video, but this is really inspiring! This means a lot and seeing a lot of these comments really warms my heart. Love y'all!
2023 edit:
Jesus christ this video seems to get picked up my the algorithm every so often and it's always exciting to see new people discovering it!
I cringe every time I hear it now
The youtube algorithm works in mysterious ways
Hi I just found that video threw the algorithm, I hope to see more amazing high quality content of you, these 8:17 minutes where a pleasure to hear, your voice is really calm, thank you for the video :)

Well to be honest you summon us who love this music :)
You can find Plastic love on Spotify now!!!!!
Plastic Lover made all great choices: A great music, a great photo, a great mix.
i feel like the image still works because out of all the album covers or photos of her, it's the best at introducing her to new audiences.
right? hair on point, bow tie, suspenders, with the white button up all in black and white? iconic and very modern compared to what the youth of today are wearing lol (especially when subverting gender norms and stereotypes during that time period)
This is probably the most specific subject I have ever seen a video essay about. Really cool, good work man
The song MUST HAVE a 40 episodes Drama serie, about a young girl, i love how sweet and innocente Mariya sounds in the song, it makes it that much more Nostalgic. And we all can relate to that.
Story: guy travels accidentally to the past, meets a japanese High school female student in the 80s, we see the culture, places etc from the 80s, (Michael Jackson Bad tour, etc) then he has to come back alone to a future where Vaporwave is the trend, and he kinda moves on with another chick but he misses Mariya, (just the song's character not the actual musician)
then Mariya comes to the future but she doesnt recognize him, but they have so much chemistry they fall in love again, representing plastic love as it really is. (Volatile) Then she remembers him from the past.
Its a happy ending with Vaporwave, Private caller Saint Pepsi, and of Course Plastic Love, with even extended added Lyrics from Mariya to fit this story.
yo it should be about mariya, like her heartbreak and dancing in clubs, then she meets the dude ur talking abt
Sorry but I'd have to disagree, her actual love life is way better. This song was made with her husband Tatsuro Yamashita another extremely popular japanese pop artist.
I have to root for that other chick then, poor soul deserves better than just being a rebound girl for a random protagonist..

Only in America is it called "City Pop" it's officially called "New Music" in Japan.

This song is one of those stranger things in music where an emotion of an era is hard to put in words, yet sends you back in time with sound.
Found this when trying to find a french cover of the song. Gotta admit it, I'm impressed with this video, will be looking for more.
I didn’t make any of this assumptions but now I don’t stop thinking about them
It's all disco and funk. "city pop" is modern western term.
Yeah, but if you refer to it as city pop in Japan, they may have no idea of what you are talking about. They would just call it jpop or "old pop" (I've seen a video of japanese being asked on the streets about city pop, and they had no idea of what it is)
@@madruga2112 strawman argument
@@Washicles why?
In Japan, i think it's called "new music"
Sure but if you just searched for jappenese 80s disco you'd get alot of other stuff.
I guess the internet did her a favor and fixed rebranding issues.
I discovered that there is a Filipino song called "lumayo ka man sa akin" and the singer Rodel Naval go to Japan and heard the Mariya's song "Single again" and he made the song called "lumayo ka man sa akin"
both of them are nice the "Single again" and the "Lumayo ka man sa akin"
It’s funny because i only discovered plastic love after listening to a bunch of city pop on soundcloud. I never liked it but it introduced me to a bunch of other city pop songs.
i found plastic love because it got added in an update to taiko no tatsujin on ios. i had no idea there was this much online lore about this song. i was also really confused when i found the near 8 minute youtube video after listening to the original on apple music cus the intro felt a bit too long to me.

Love Mariya's music. Its so easy to find songs that are similar and "what others listen to" and love creating playlists for that
Okay dude I subscribe, Now Give me the Sauce! xD
btw bro that's an amazing video, really informational.
