My mom bought the 45 when it was first released and told 5yo me, "Remember this. This is going to be a huge sign and will impact the world." 40 years later, this is still my favorite Christmas song and i still remember the impact it continues to have. ❤
And just think in the last 20 years of all the meaningful things the new generations will have to look back on ….. oh wait. There is nothing. 😂 Thank god we grew up when we did huh !
I was a teen metal head at this time. About 30 years later I watched him on The Apprentice and ended up rooting for him, really liking and appreciating who he was as a person. Then explored Culture Club and his solo stuff more (and Crying Game, etc) and discovered that he was/is way-way more talented than he was ever given credit for. Getting his audiobook for Xmas this year, was waiting for him to do one for years. He's a unique and very talented gem.
I remember when this came out and that line that he sung just lifted the whole track to another level, it set the bar for the track. Then as each vocalist came in they raised it in their own way, George Micheal, Bono but it was George who set that track alight for me. A single line that will forever define for me what a fantastic singer that man is.

So much music history in '84 and '85. So many great tracks benefiting so many people around the world. Today, we see that but we do not see groups of people makin a song to benefit whatever cause they are passionate about
These are the brilliant creative people who didn't become normies and brought some amazing meaning to our lives, and managed to save the sad dumb materialistic AF 80's from itself ... Love them!
Lyrical irony! Sting, the artist, singing about “the bitter sting of tears” layers an unintentional pun on his name with the emotional weight of the phrase. Whether it was deliberate or not, it adds a clever twist to the line.
The whole song is much better because of BG’s vocals. The recording is flat until he comes in. Great, great harmonies from Sting and George Michael as well.
All those enormous egos coming together for a great cause and then you see Bono, with one of the world’s largest egos, glance at Sting completely blown away that they’re standing next to each other.
I really wish they'd go back and scan the original films of this. This is a piece of history. It needs a proper restoration. Edit: OMG... they DID scan it! ua-cam.com/video/V6_6PzRQ9sQ/v-deo.html
