"Supposedly Fun" has such resonance for me because when I was about 10-12 years old, receiving a book as a gift decidedly did Not float my boat. It seemed more like a chore. But in my adulthood, reading is such a treasure. I love that it takes me places I have never gone, or ever will be able to go to. And explores with different eyes experiences I might be closer to. It can take me through all emotional states. Why is your channel called Supposedly Fun? Thank you so much for your videos and mentioning buddy reads!
After I watched your best books of the last 25 years video, I picked up A Place for Us and loved it. Now I’ve bought so many books on your videos that I’ve absolutely adored. You really had me at Sue Grafton though, once I found out that you had her book collection. So happy that I found your channel.😊
I just found your channel last week and am so glad I did! Beloved has always been one of my favorites. So has A Fine Balance (so good!). Thanks to you I have now a giant TBR list to get through, with A Place for Us at the top!
Oh my gosh when you said how the part at the river from lonesome dove haunts your dreams, i totally related! My part that I literally dreamt was near the end of that book. It's extremely rare for a book to impact me in that way
I just finished a re-read of Shuggie Bain and was crying all over again. It’s simply a beautiful novel and it’s the one that I’m always begging my friends to read
I read The Great Believers and loved it. Totally agree with you. The present time frame actually didn't have the same impact as the 1980s period and it weakened the book for me. I think if the present time was made just as a prologue and epilogue would have made the book stronger. This was a 4-star read for me.
Larry McMurtry's book successfully transcended regional fiction onto a national stage. The success of Horseman Pass By and The Last Picture Show as books and later as films didn't hurt. McMurtry was popular with women readers. Over the years I met many women who told me that he understood and wrote women well. I casually knew his son James McMurtry when I lived in Austin and frequented his shows. He is wonderful musician. "Song for a Deckhand's Daughter" is a masterpiece in songmaking. Lonesome Dove gave McMurtry a second life, and the success of the t.v. mini series introduced him to a new generation. McMurtry was also an avid book collector, who travelled the country buying up rare books for his bookstores in Archer City. One day he bought "my" Vladimir Nabokov's Eugene Onegin translations, 1st editions, hardbound, from an Austin book seller I knew. I said they were "my" books until I could afford to buy them. One day McMurtry came and raided the place, making my friend quite happy, and me disgruntled ever since:)
New subscriber here, I enjoyed hearing about all your favourites. My second read just this year was A Place for Us, and I too, sobbed right through the last part of it. It will remain always in my soul also. Thank you!
was supposed to study Beloved this year in my last year of university, but something terrible happened in my country that make everything stop. I loved Don't Cry For Me, can't wait to Listen the Second book of it. Merry Christmas 🎄& سنة سعيدة عليك 🎊
The Great Believers and Hamnet are on my TBR. Loved A Fine Balance, Lonesome Dove and Shuggie Bain. The Yield is one I picked up because of you and still need to get to it. Also still need to read Demon Copperhead. Great books, Greg! 😊💙
I read A fine Balance many years ago, maybe over 10 years ago and I think I was at a different point in my « reading life » and didn’t appreciate it. I think reading it now would be a better experience for me… I’m very impressed by how you can remember details for books you read years ago! 😅😂
I never comment but I loved this video. I’ve read many, but not all, of these and I loved hearing your thoughts. It made me look at a couple of them differently (Great Believers) and made me want to reread others (Shuggie Bain and A Place for Us). As always, love your channel and all the content you put out.
I like your reflection on five years of BookTubing. I’m about to complete my second year of reading (BookTubing less than a year), and it’s encouraging that practicing builds you up.
Great video, it inspired me to go find my favorite books of the last five years (still in progress and so much fun)! The very fascinating thing about loving certain books is that e.g. I love many of your favourite books and authors, yet I found A Place For Us boring and Hamnet's writing style over the top😂. As many booktubers with very similar taste to mine love those, it was almost a shock to me that I didn't like them...
I am now reading Lonesome Dove (mentioned my intent to do so in a comment on one of your other videos). I *did* read the prequel Comanche Moon, first, though, being a bit of a chronology stickler - and it was great, but Lonesome Dove is better, I think. And so readable!
Of this group, Hamnet is my favorite hands down, but I have not read a lot of these books yet. Considering how I feel about Hamnet though… it would be a tough book to beat. Great list and great, fun video! I’m still reading for this year, but I don’t think anything will break into my best books of the year. When I went through my app to see what I had read this year, I was surprised to find a bunch of really great books. I had been thinking that my reading year was quite blah, but there were some great ones. I’ll be working on my best of list and will post it as a comment when you do your video.
I found your channel recently and have a longer TBR list because of you. Definitely added more from this video. Thank you! Merry Christmas and lots of love from the Pacific Northwest 🧡
Christmas Day Greg ❤Lots of books I haven’t read Song of Solomon Beloved Matrix Now In November Don’t Cry For Me Like A Love Story Aristotle & Dante book 2
I enjoyed your review of Gone With The Wind and how you included Beloved by saying if you want the black person's perspective of the slavery experience then read Beloved.
BELOVED is incredible. It’s criminal that I only learned of it’s existence a few years ago. Truly something everyone should read.
It’s a great book!

Probably because of the book "A Supposedly Fun thing I'll never do again" by David Foster Wallace.
Love your channel. Just found it and couldn’t be happier.
Thank you so much! That’s so kind.

Great favorites!!!!

I’m glad you are enjoying my channel! And I hope you enjoy A Place For Us as much as I did if you get to it. 🥂📚
A Place For Us has such staying power for me. Lovely book!❤
It is such a lovely book! I'm glad you also liked it.
Oh my gosh when you said how the part at the river from lonesome dove haunts your dreams, i totally related! My part that I literally dreamt was near the end of that book. It's extremely rare for a book to impact me in that way
Toni Morrison is my favorite author!!!! Try Paradise.
I was so sad when the book Lonesome Dove ended. Rarely have a felt that way about a book that is almost 900 pages!!!
Great video! Thanks for the recommendations & reading inspiration.
I’m glad you enjoyed it!
I just finished a re-read of Shuggie Bain and was crying all over again. It’s simply a beautiful novel and it’s the one that I’m always begging my friends to read
It’s a beautiful book.
Read the Rain Heron with our book club. Everyone loved it. Robbie arnott and the book were completely new to the group
It’s such a good book.

That’s an interesting idea for how to structure the book.
Song of Solomon, Beloved and Demon Copperhead are three of my all time favorites!! I plan to read A Place for Us and Matrix very soon…

Good morning. Was it you that suggested the book The Removed by Brandon Hobson? I love it
was supposed to study Beloved this year in my last year of university, but something terrible happened in my country that make everything stop.
I loved Don't Cry For Me, can't wait to Listen the Second book of it.
Merry Christmas 🎄& سنة سعيدة عليك 🎊

It's amazing how different times in our lives can produce very different results for reading.

It definitely does! Congrats on two years.
Great video, it inspired me to go find my favorite books of the last five years (still in progress and so much fun)!

The Rain Heron sounds great. Just ordered it. Song of Solomon is my favourite of Toni Morrison but haven’t read Beloved yet. Look forward to it
Song of Solomon, it's really amazing!!I think that you would enjoy Beloved too.🎉🎉🎉
I hope you love The Rain Heron as much as I did.
It's such a good book! 🥰 Oh so hard to choose.

Great video Greg! Hamnet is one of my favorite reads. I’m hoping the Marriage Portrait is just as good but have read mixed review’s. Happy Holidays! 🎄
Happy holidays! I was not a fan of Marriage Portrait but some people have definitely liked it.

I look forward to your final list! Reading years are definitely full of ups and downs. And Hamnet is so good.
I found your channel recently and have a longer TBR list because of you. Definitely added more from this video. Thank you! Merry Christmas and lots of love from the Pacific Northwest 🧡
Merry Christmas to you and yours from Missoula!
The great believers is such a fantastic book
It is!
Christmas Day Greg ❤Lots of books I haven’t read
Song of Solomon
Beloved
Matrix
Now In November
Don’t Cry For Me
Like A Love Story
Aristotle & Dante book 2
Too many books, not enough time!
I enjoyed your review of Gone With The Wind and how you included Beloved by saying if you want the black person's perspective of the slavery experience then read Beloved.
Thank you. I think it’s an important thing for some people to do.
The problem with "The Great Believers " is that the author spread herself too thin. It was a moving novel, but the tension kept dissipating.
