55 years ago we had a wood maker teacher who lost patience with some of us youngsters and throw anything which came to hand even a chisel. Consequently we all turned off, if we had a teacher like you how much more we would have learnt. At the age of 71 I enjoy your lessons so very much. Thank You!
You get a solid like from me I've seen far to many videos where people work small pieces of metal they went out of their way to temper then decide to run it on grinder not knowing it can wreck the temper or get to hot to handle! Excellent video!
We recently lumbered a 36" maple, a 36" white ash, and a 32" pecan. After drying, we tried planing with a Rigid (Home Depot) 13" planer with 2 HSS knives ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxIzvvTi3_Qc8JnVdYYRJCvuoDC4QjTzeL . This job was clearly too much for that machine. The pecan was particularly difficult, due to heavy mineral deposits, and a sharp pair of HSS knives would be consumed by a mere 3 boards. We were also having lots of problems from chip bruising, due to poor dust collection. The shavings came off like straw and jammed in the 4" hose.We bought the DW735 simply to be able to run carbide blades, which worked brilliantly for the pecan. However, we found it to be a much, MUCH nicer machine. It was far more rigid than the "Rigid" planer, and far more accurate as well. But what I liked most about it was the dust feed. This machine has its own blower, which shreds the "straw" like shavings as they come off the cutting head and helps boost the shavings into the dust collection system. No more clogs! It's also nicely sealed so that the internals stay quite clean. This is just a well tempered machine that's a delight to use. It literally cut the labor in half. Just another example of getting what you pay for.
Always a pleasure to watch your videos. You have a knack for imparting just enough practical knowledge to allow for others to follow your steps, and your enthusiasm is plainly felt.
As per usual another great video. I also agree that you have spot on timing for your videos in so many respects. I've done a few of my own wood planes over the years. My own block plane is a little taller so it fills my hand. This avoided the need to scrunch up my fingers and also reduces the risk of catching the heel of my palm on the sharp edge of any serious hardwoods as I'm planing an edge. It doesn't LOOK as nice as yours with your low speedy silhouette. But for function I prefer it for the way I can hold it tirelessly in hand for much longer periods of time and not risk bleeding on the wood when the heel of my palm gets cut by some hardwood when I don't hold it up high enough.
Thanks very much Bruce! You make some good points, it is quite small. Until I use it for any length of time I couldn't be sure how comfortable it will be. It does feel good though the little I have used it. :)
The wood plane part I think I could do, forge grinding and hardening would be out of my skill set. Am thinking along the lines of finding an old block blade and using that.... great video as always ....
Thanks Bruce! I'm happy it comes across that way. I haven't really planned my videos that way, they just seem to have evolved into the way that they are. :)
You’ve become my favorite UA-cam channel. Hopefully you don’t water it down when you start receiving free CNC, laser and 3D printers. It’s not even close to be as interesting as watching you build real hand made cool stuff. Thank you!
Like your approach and am inspired to try my hand at making a block plane. I use the block plane frequently if for just sharpening a pencil for marking.
I would never question you Neil, but I was close to it when I saw you pulling out that lawnmower blade... Holy cow.. it just goes to show what you can do with a little knowledge and a "just do it" attitude. Absolutely fantastic stuff (once again!!). Looking forward to seeing the little hammer, the Instagram pic looks sweet 👍
I know this is a bit off topic here but I just want to saw how great the audio is in your videos. Your voice is always crystal clear no matter where you've got your camera set up and if you do voice-overs afterwards it is not noticeable to me, and that is something I appreciate.
Good on ya Mate. I love the way you just make things seem so simple and easy. I'm gonna make a couple for myself. Thank you for taking the time to make and share this video with us. Tom
Really liked the fact that you made the blade yourself (and the furnace!). Super cool build - lot of hand tool work there, my kind of video. Thank you! I loved it! (and so kid the kiddos)
Congratulations on 700k! Been catching up on all of your videos since finding you through your Scrapwood Challenge videos (bladeless fan to be exact). Great channel. Enjoy every single video. Can't wait to see the rest!
Definitely going to make me one or two these at some point, as I don't have a decent plane. But if I make the blades I'll need to make a Fergus first... so much to do!
You make all of this look so easy! Your videos are very inspiring and give me motivation to try to build stuff like this too. Sometime I will try to build a plane myself. (But with a bought blade.) Thank you so much!
"And they look like bacon too!" Must be getting near lunch time for you (lol)! In all seriousness, great job! I never thought of a mower blade. I have some kicking around so I'll most likely use those. Thanks!
Great stuff Neil :) The step are well explained and demonstrated :) I love making my own Planes. I hope this inspires people to do the same. Take care and blessings to you all ॐ

Ahaaa gotcha , this time you did it the easy way , cutting the wooden block to three pieces to make the blade groove , while the previous plane you chiseled it :-)))
All through the video, I was thinking that it looked like a computer mouse. But that bit at the end, oh! my! Definitely a computer mouse! Another great build. ❤🌅🌵
Between Metal and Wood, can't figure out where you have the most experience!!! Super impressive and wish you were on the other side of the world so I could get you drunk and pick your brain!!! Keep up the good work!!!
Great job on the shape. It's hard to make a plane with a unique shape that still works. Yours kinda reminds me of an HNT Gordon., but is still its own design. Love your videos.
Thanks Jed! That's great to hear. When I start a video I don't have any expectations of how it will work out but if it comes across that way then that's fantastic! :)

I think you're one of the two or three best woodworkers on youtube. Bravo.

I made a bench plane many years ago. I bought the iron. Very satisfying to use a tool that you made yourself. Well done!
Love that feeling Tom - every time you use a tool that you made yourself! :)
I like how you mix hand tools and power tools on your videos. Hand plane sound is quite relaxing compare to a jointer
Always a pleasure to watch your videos. You have a knack for imparting just enough practical knowledge to allow for others to follow your steps, and your enthusiasm is plainly felt.
inheritance of a few old spiers has started a fondness for planes. will try this one and experiment with the angles..
Go for it Tom! :)

Very nice plane. Really like the end shot where it propels itself.
Glad you liked that Donnie! :)
Fergus is a right proper lad and he's doing a great job.
I like the mower blade idea. Easily accessible just about anywhere

A good source book on steel prep is Hardening, Tempering, and Heat Treating by Tubal Cain. Amazon has it.
Alex T man mr.pete makes books on everything!
That’s not Mr Pete, but was the pseudonym of an author and contributor for various English model engineering magazines many years ago.
What a great video, you took the "mystery" out of blades and made it so straightforward. I'll have to try this some day

so great wood and metal work. nice pics an good editing. timelaps is 100%👑
Thanks very much Lukas - glad you enjoyed it! :)
Just fantastic! You really break things down in an easy to understand way. Thanks!

Glad you liked it Nick! I'll probably get the hammer video done sometime the weekend. :)
Pask Makes Looking forward to it 👍👍
Next contestant on “Forged in Fire”! Nice work! Especially liked the Pig and the woodwork. Perfect size!
those shavings would make excellent kindling for firestarting
Sweet sound of the shaving plane!
That is the best tutorial on the subject that I found so far!
Think I'm going to have to give this a try. As always, thanks for sharing.
Steve
"It cuts nice so now I'm going to start shaping it."
Block plane is very good, congratulations !

Very cool, sweet little project.
I'm addicted to hand plane videos, so thanks for this ^^
No worries! :)
Very nice...once I get my forge up and running again I really want to start a woodworking tool series. Great build bud. Love it.
It's a treat to watch your videos! Even your very first attempts at these things are so perfect that I wonder where is the room for improvement!
Really liked the fact that you made the blade yourself (and the furnace!). Super cool build - lot of hand tool work there, my kind of video. Thank you! I loved it! (and so kid the kiddos)
Do I make stuff. Naw, I just watch ole Pask make stuff. More satisfying.
Such a simple thing yet so beautiful.
So that's what the forge was for! Nice plane.
Very good Pask. It’s a wonderful thing when you can make the whole thing yourself. Good video and well put together.
Thanks very much Becky! :)
Great stuff Pask
Great work and a lovely tool to boot.
Another beautiful plane! Thanks for sharing it with all of us, really enjoyable.
Nice work as usual Pask. You make it look easy.

Great video! I love being able to tackle every part of a project from start to finish. Thanks for demystifying an otherwise daunting build👍

Yes, showing a different method. :)

Genius... a true artisan
“It gives nice shavings now, and they look like bacon” See now you’re talking to your American audience! 😎
Great job!!!! I’m going to have to try this too!!!

Nice work Neil!
Great job on the shape. It's hard to make a plane with a unique shape that still works. Yours kinda reminds me of an HNT Gordon., but is still its own design. Love your videos.
Thanks very much Robert! I really wanted to make my own design but not that easy to come up with something original! :)
Really useful video! I'm going to be making some knives and was wondering about the treatment process! Beautiful hand plane
Beautifully done
Master, thanks for you time , and share you knowledge... gretings from panama
Love this little project.
Nicely done. Love the still-motion outro.
Thanks Thomas - glad you liked it! :)
Very effective tool! You always have nice ideas!
Nice plane! Thank you.
I think I had a mouse that looked like that years ago. But I'm guessing your plane works a lot better. Great job!
You’ve inspired me to try!
You made it look so simple. Enjoyed the vid!

Looks great and I bet it’s a lot lighter for those people that carry a block plane in they’re apron.
Can't wait for the hammer video. Keep it up!
