Mike Patton's not on any of the Instruments, it's a Python Lee Jackson sample (filtered thru Automator), plus Astacio the Nudist on second bass I think, plus Dan The Automator on Pianosaurus. That, with Jennifer Charles and Mike Patton's vocals, absolutely gorgeous
Matthew Tickel holy cow! That’s it! That’s their sample. Thanks for sharing, I love finding where samples come from and exploring the inspiration behind the inspiration.
@@DiscoDashco I don't think it's a sample, I think it's just a very similar bass line and chord progression. If anything, I imagine Portishead used a sample from an older track for 'sour times' ?? but this is just as cool as Portishead, the "song" is very different but like they definitely would've realised when writing it! haha I doubt they would mind Mike Patton doing bit of a steal to be honest, there's probably a lot of mutual respect between the artists, not like when the dooshe from the weeknd outright stole a Portishead sample after being told he couldn't use it!
After all, our dreams went down Sinking for our very eyes Still echoing the sound Oh, the frozen dreadful cries Witnessed the passing of our only loves Lose a barrel to the sea Why did you choose my only love? It could have easily been me But it seems there was some other plan One I don't care to understand In the refuge of these foreign arms I could find your holy land How can it be that we defy this tragedy From this lifeboat in the dark? Is it wrong that we could come together? Wind and sorrow bear a spark In our soul and desperation Truest thing we'd ever known But to admit that to love would be blasphemy Just to show we had our ground How can it be that we defy this tragedy From this lifeboat in the dark? Is it wrong that we could come together? Wind and sorrow bear a spark How can it be that we defy this tragedy From this lifeboat in the dark? Is it wrong that we could come together? Wind and sorrow bear a spark How can it be that we defy this tragedy From this lifeboat in the dark? Is it wrong that we could come together? Wind and sorrow bear a spark
After all our dreams went down sinking 'fore our very eyes still echoing the sound o'er the frozen, dreadful lies Witness the passing of our only lows lose a battle to the sea Why did you choose, my only love? It could have easily been me But it seems there was some other plan one I don't care to understand In the refuge of these foreign arms I could find a holy land How can it be that we defy this tragedy from this lifeboat in the dark? Is it wrong that we will come together then done sorrow, bear a spark? In our sowing desperation to this thing we'd ever-know To admit that to the world would be blasphemy just to show we had outgrown How can it be that we defy this tragedy from this lifeboat in the dark? Is it wrong that we could come together then done sorrow, bear a spark? (x3)
Thanks for the post ! And for any " crate diggers" who come across this UA-cam post, if ya wanna check out some songs whose vocals and bass line sound similar. Checkout the vocal work from Tom Waits on "Eggs And Sausage In A Cadillac With Susan Michelson ", and the bass lines from David Porter: "The Masquerade Is Over", and I Monster: "Daydream In Blue".
@@iamskilldog4538 Oh yes ! Those 70's Funk, and Soul Artists produced some classics ! You can throw Rock in there, too...ya just gotta dig a little deeper. And for those that are a little be more adventurous...there's Classical. Not sayin' that they got it from him, but the opening melody from Carl Orff's : "O Fortuna Carmina Burana" sounds a lot like (insert the Rappers name here). Just sayin', that's all !
My bad...I neglected to mention the genre that , IMO, paved the way for the "Golden Era" of Rap and the "Boom-bap" sound....Jazz...madd love ! Those Jazz era Artists put food on the table for a whole lotta folks that came after them.
This song is so so so sad. It reminds me of my lost years when I was so poor and miserable. I'm now rich and powerful and I can pretty much have anything I want.
this album still 10 of 10 after 15 years
My passed husband lead me to this song today. Thank you, my love.
Gotta love trip-hop. Such a wonderful track.
This is Mike Patton.
Brilliant god of a musician.
& Dan "the Automator" Nakamura. 1 of the most brilliant producer/engineers EVER.
Don't forget Kid Koala, Dan, and Jennifer Charles.

Patton & Jennifer Charles
beautiful ... just beautiful
The bassline reminds me of Portishead's Glory Box.
that is so on the money! I literally just said that same thing to my cousin. 30 seconds before I read your post...
It reminds me of this

This definitely constitutes TripHop though, with the sampling, live baseline, and slower BPM.

God this song hits different in 2020...
"Frenship & Emily Warren - Capsize"
Best written song on the album
After all, our dreams went down
Sinking for our very eyes
Still echoing the sound
Oh, the frozen dreadful cries
Witnessed the passing of our only loves
Lose a barrel to the sea
Why did you choose my only love?
It could have easily been me
But it seems there was some other plan
One I don't care to understand
In the refuge of these foreign arms
I could find your holy land
How can it be that we defy this tragedy
From this lifeboat in the dark?
Is it wrong that we could come together?
Wind and sorrow bear a spark
In our soul and desperation
Truest thing we'd ever known
But to admit that to love would be blasphemy
Just to show we had our ground
How can it be that we defy this tragedy
From this lifeboat in the dark?
Is it wrong that we could come together?
Wind and sorrow bear a spark
How can it be that we defy this tragedy
From this lifeboat in the dark?
Is it wrong that we could come together?
Wind and sorrow bear a spark
How can it be that we defy this tragedy
From this lifeboat in the dark?
Is it wrong that we could come together?
Wind and sorrow bear a spark
After all our dreams went down
sinking 'fore our very eyes
still echoing the sound
o'er the frozen, dreadful lies
Witness the passing of our only lows
lose a battle to the sea
Why did you choose, my only love?
It could have easily been me
But it seems there was some other plan
one I don't care to understand
In the refuge of these foreign arms
I could find a holy land
How can it be that we defy this tragedy
from this lifeboat in the dark?
Is it wrong that we will come together
then done sorrow, bear a spark?
In our sowing desperation
to this thing we'd ever-know
To admit that to the world would be blasphemy
just to show we had outgrown
How can it be that we defy this tragedy
from this lifeboat in the dark?
Is it wrong that we could come together
then done sorrow, bear a spark?

A Tom Waits reference is not what I would have expected, but is such a good reference.
@@shawnweddel6671 👍Tom Waits is one of those "IYKYK" ("If You Know, You Know." ) Artists . Hella talented but, a lot of folks don't know about.
Patton , God ..
