It took me months, but I can finally play this shuffle all the way through without completely running out of breath or forgetting what comes next. II am in awe of Will's ability to move between the single, often bent notes and the vamping chords in the lip pursing style. I have to tongue block it. Thanks, Will,.for a challenging and worthwhile blues harmonica lesson in the style of Big Walter Horton..
Frankly, I don’t know how Will does that comping rhythm with only lip pursing. I learned how to tongue block just to do the style of comping Will is teaching hear. Amazing. Will is a phenom.
I’ve listened to this about 20 times
Brilliant playing
Thanks
I think that for many years Big Walter was under appreciated...... thanks for keeping his memory alive
No problem, he was one of my biggest influences on the harp.
its nice to find someone doing intermediate lessons
Been watching harp players for ages and decided to give it a go myself and of all the lessons on UA-cam I find yours the easiest to follow and your ego doesn't run away with you like some other players who are supposed to be teaching but are really just showing off. There's no crap with you either and that's always a bonus. You go strait to it. Thanks Will for all your efforts and for sharing your gifts with us .
@Edward Morton.. I'd have to agree with you. Other guys try to explain it to fast.
I think I know who's ego you're referring to...Ada,cough!!! Also, what's with all the harmonica 'seminars'!?? - everything seems to have a business model these days - hardly in keeping with spirit of the intrument eh?
@@bobshuwab1988 yup haha Ada cough. I hear ya
@@bobshuwab1988 Are you talking about Adam Gussow?
@@prisonmike6461 Him and one or two others, but I'm not a hater.
I took me over a year to master the shuffle comping vamp, but it was worth all the frustration to get there. Getting it to swing requires a lot of practice. But, I'll say it again, it's worth it. That shuffle feel on the harp can get a crowd moving. To really get in the pocket, I recommend using a drum machine during practice after you get the notes happening.
Had to come back and revisit this vid. Killer job again.
That full to half step on the three draw just blew my mind. Real basic stuff that I'm missing. Thanks for the highlight will wilde
Just ferking hell will bloody awesome again you surprise me every time in england we call that well done all boy🤣🤣
Well done. Tempo is spot on. That’s one of the hardest things in playing Walter’s Boogie.
Thanks!
practice with a metronome…or drum machine…or a jam track. It really helps get that rhythm solid. It’ll make all your playing more in the pocket, too. Will breaks this comp down very concisely. No over-explaining.
You're killing me Will!! Lol. Make it appear too easy man haha. Thanks Big Guy 😊!!
Merci beaucoup l'Ami !!!
I keep coming back for ypuo playing in the start . Absolutely awesome
Aside from the lesson part, which is awesome BTW, the initial complete tune is hands down one of the best, most enjoyable harp tunes around the web, I think I looped this a hundred times... great stuff! Thanks
Damn, that was Badd Ass! Call you Big Will Wilde! Wow man!
Great lesson Will... Old dog's can learn new tricks!!! Thank you for your sharing, and commitment...
Awesome lesson Will. Massive thanks 👍
Nice one , still here
Still practicing
I used to find your stuff a little beyond me
This is brilliant
Thanks for sharing
You’ve got some of the best chops in the business. I’m glad I found you man your going to help me tremendously. Thank you much !
Great lesson. I can now play this. thank you
Thanks dude, conscise teaching
The goods.
Thanks Will I was just watching and practicing there. I get a lot from your lessons. If only I could get the bends as easily as you do. Just have to keep keeping on going.
Excellent lesson - great show on solo!
Thank you will your the best harp player I know 👍
Always a great lesson to limber up the chops and then just go for it. Roll right into unleashed improvisation and fleash out the creativity. Gotta say though Will Wilde, your "Ultimate Blues Harmonica Soloist" course emensly helped me with key stepping stones and understanding. From scales to so many other building blocks so as to leap forward in my playing.
This is brilliant,thanks!!!
Quality brah. I enjoyed.
Nice one Will, been playing since I was 7 or 8(Dad taught me) but played melodys with no sharps and flats, then I met woman and never really picked it up again for years until 2 or 3 years ago, that's is when I got into the blues....again. Thanks very much and I have subscribed to your channel.
Thanks for the inspiration!
Tremendously enjoyable thank you
From Buenos Aires, Argentina... Very good job. Thank you very much
Thanks Brother another great lesson. I don't know why this has been such a challenge for me but this really helps.
Good stuff, Will! Thanks for sharing this!

Nice one Will dunno why no one has one been here for a year thanks man.
Thanks Robbie, I think this might have been the first tutorial video I ever made. Almost exactly 4 years ago to the day!
Will, that was totally brilliant, your demo of the 12 bar shuffle blues. Excellent explanation of the vamping technique too. You have totally inspired me to practice. Thank you👍

well done man
cool!!
thanks ...now i got the beat..🎶🎵🎶
Hi Will, when you vamp and blow a note, ie: the B6 B4, etc in Lesson #10, do you also blow the chord to the single note? I thought, when vamping, the chord played, follows the single note played! I couldn't see how you played those particular notes while vamping! Thank you, for your super lessons.
Hi Will, I love it, arpegio literally means to play the harp
2:55 This is what I wanted
Wow, I can only do this tongue blocking style but I like your tone, I will have to work on that.
cool kick ass jam
BRAVO FROM ME.....
Thanks for the lesson Will. I'm having trouble blowing a consistent sound on the 1st hole on the Bb harmonica. It seems if I blow too hard it will not make a tone at all. any tips?
There's something I want to say even though it is not in context. I only say this here because I have a lot of respect for you. It's about Butterfield:
So many experts; so little time. You play it your way. I play it mine. Play how you like, ain't no crime.
Thanks for the lessons me oh my,
Don't wanna be jukebox, want wings to fly.
That's kinda what you were saying and I say Thanks. Getting on a plane to the universe. Boarding from the gates of simple verse. Departure and arrival indeterminate. It don't matter anyways. whatever anyone says. It don't matter at all. It just doesn't matter at all.
Muito massa valeu
My dog howled all the way through the lesson. Means he liked it.
Hahaha I'm glad he approves!
Do you ever come to Thailand? If you do, let me know please.
How important is it to know the Blues Scale and how does it help? I have trouble breathing right with it. Lungs full at that end
Well I'm totally a beginner ,so I'll come back when i actually can do anything.
Focus on single notes. When you can pick out single notes up and down the harp, blowing and drawing, then you can start working on bends.
Thank u for lesson. Horton use lip pursuing or Tongue blocking for this style?
Tongue block
This was very helpful, thanks. Started watching all your videos. Question please: can this shuffle be played with different keys? I have a C, A, and G. Thanks.
+Dean Marsh You can play it on any key but it will work best on the lower key harps
hello and thanks again for the great lessons. I was wondering what percentage of your playing, especially in front of live audiences, is tongue-blocked and how much is lip pursed. I have read more than once that tongue blocked players automatically have better tone. Do you think that's true?
TalkingPoints1 Personally, I play lip pursed all the time. I only use my tongue for octaves and effects. You certainly get a DIFFERENT tone tongue blocked, I wouldn't say it's necessarily better though. It depends what kind of sound you want.
A chap called Steve Rye used to play like that.
That´s amaizing Will.
I don´t know if I can handle it that way but I will try.
By the Way, what kind of Harp is that, sounds interesting?
Me´s playing most Time the Marine Band in C and The Lee Oscar Cross in C.
Thanks, it's a Seydel 1847 Classic in the key of Bb

So are you blow camping after a blow nite like you are draw camping after a draw note? It’s not clear. Like in the 1 chord demo - is that a 5 blow followed by. 5 chord blow or draw please?
Draw over the 1 chord, blow over the 4 chord. Draw over the 5 chord
just one thing... uhuuuuuuuu uau
can you write the tabs somewere? Its easier for me to learn when i dont need to write it by my own, im from Poland.
Another wonderful lesson, Will! Thanks! I have a question: Do you ever actually use this technique in a performance situation? I don't think I've ever seen you use it, but I could be mistaken.
All the time, if I'm playing a shuffle.
@@willharmonicawilde A link to one, please.

@@willharmonicawilde Great! Thanks!
Yes, I've seen it! Masterful playing, and singing, Will!
I can't seem to figure out how to avoid running out of breath while playing draw notes and vamping. Any ideas?
Try to expel some air through your nose when you hit the blow note... Failing that you can replace draw 2 with blow 3 occasionally; it's the same note.
( 2 Postion. ) ( Apegio )2d. 3d. 4d. 5b. Play 2
( Chord ) 4 bars ) 3 bend. ( 4---IV Chord. )
4 b. 5b. 6b. 6d. ( 2 Bars ) back( 1-- Chord )
5----V Chord. 1d. 2d full bend. 3 full bend. 4b. ( keep vamping)
Turn Around
Hey Will, I sent you a message through your website, but i might of screwed it up somehow. I'll try it again when I get a chance later. Cheers for now.
Nothing came through. Try again or send me a message on Facebook. Website seems to be working fine, so I can't see why there should be a problem.
What do you mean by 2nd position?
Although I am using a Bb harmonica I am actually playing in the key of F. 2nd position means you are using Draw 2 (F in this case) as your root note instead of Blow 1 (Bb)- which would be 1st position. Around 90% of blues harp that you hear is played in 2nd position.
Excellent but hard I’m trying to get the rhythm
Thanks Robert, this lesson might help a bit with practicing the shuffle rhythm ua-cam.com/video/UrnvtaDBFzw/v-deo.html
It kinda sounds like Floyds hotel by j giels band a bit?
I don't know that song, but there are literally THOUSANDS of shuffles that follow this progression!
haven't been playing long, 2 or 3 months
but wouldn't it be 1B 2B 2D 3D bent down
over the IV chord on the turnaround
maybe Walt does it the way you do it
I don't listen to too many albums
cheers
Was wondering how you vamp with puckering
What key harmonica is this?
Bb
Thank you! Keep up the great work.
SIck opening!!!!!!!!
I wld love to jam with you.
I cld use some criticism
