If you need to take it with you in a backpack, a device like this makes sense. But for a permanent setup on your desk at home, a big eGPU enclosure and desktop GPU will cost about the same and be much faster.

I've been toying with external GPUs for many years through various DIY efforts; cut-down mobo expansion cards, riser cable extensions, total hack together 'for science!' doo-dads, all the way up to 5x-in-1 render boxes for farming. Outside of some one-off stellar accidents, the throughput on anything outside of workstation-grade mobos or server racks have been a bit disappointing. Thunderbolt 4/USB-C will Finally allow at least a remote option that's not totally dog poo for performance, though that is said for production use/GPU-accelerated tasks and not necessarily for gaming. Naturally a native option is still the best option, but for speedy productivity on the go, remote options are viable.

Needs dual independent tb5 to be game changing.
A full 50gbit for GPU and a separate 50gbit for ports ssds etc.

You can get the 7600xt 16gb for like 300 dollars. Add a power supply and a dock for another 400 max. Why would someone possibly buy this 8gb card for over 1000 dollars? I mean other than it just being enclosed like this, which is fine but not worth anywhere close to that cost. Wow.

I'm still waiting for Thunderbolt 5...
At the moment we have only one laptop with it and it's a gaming machine, top GPU included. I hope in 2025 there will be more options.

For about 1000,- Euro, no thanks! And the next generation of integrated graphics will be faster as well.

Mac Mac Macs.... real life application in gen ai is only existing in photography.... and advertising agency assigning gigs for ai images... not cartoon stuff or hyper realistic ai, only in 100% photos gen ai.... now comes the kicker, absolutely not one single advertising agency art director or creative director "soul" on this planet working in advertising works on a PC. Not One single one .... everyone works on macs.... if you were to produce a tutorial for EGpus for mac laptops where an rtx4090 could be used with a mac laptop , you suddenly would garner another huge massive crowd...and soon an ad agency would approach you with a serious budget to do something for them.... these are much more serious revenues than UA-cam here.... just some Food for Thought ...

      running Ollama 3 plus a few added libraries on a 12900K, 128GB DDR5 6400, 4 x 4TB gen4 NVMe and finally with a trio of Quattro P4000 GPUs.
it does a LOT more than just image generation.
My main work system is an iMac Pro as well as a MacBook Pro, some iPads and a few Mac Minis I use for server work.
I would love to see more Mac info but the system needed for effective AI on the Mac M platform requires more investment than the "average" creator wants to spend. The older Intel Macs with Radeon graphics already work with older Thunderbolt eGPUs based on the AMD cards but drivers are hard to find and applications may not like it.

well genius idea, as if nobody has thought of that before , which has been the case since eGPUs first appeared

eGPUs worked on Intel MACs. M-series are not compatible with external graphic
