Jeff - after hanging upside down to dry for a few weeks, I trim my stems to about 8-10”. Makes for an excellent dried bouquet in a blue mason jar in the kitchen 😊
Thanks Jeffe 😎 I’ve never grown garlic..., and you make me so excited to try it out this year! I’ll have to check your vids out for some garlic ones 💓🧄
This year (my first for garlic) I gave the harvested bulbs a quick rinse with the hose before hanging them in the greenhouse. So far, the few we've used for cooking have been delicious! There's still ten more drying, and I'll bring them in soon. Thanks for the video!
Cheers, thanks for watching!! Watch out with that water though....just like with potatoes a dry brushing is better than using water for the long term. 🙂
Planted it in end March, 2 came out (of 3), small, but delicious. Now I cannot wait till October to plant new ones. Your videos are way cool, love to watch. Made me try my first mini garden project this spring. Love it.
You remove the first and sometimes the second layers of paper coating. This removal of those protective layers mean the Garlic cannot resist pathogens as well. I wear cloth gloves to clean the bulbs as soon as I harvest them. I also keep a fine brush on hand This way minimal layers of the garlic’s protective paper leaves are lost and it certainly will store longer. The best storage system is to learn how to make a French braid. Hang the finished braids from the upper part of a cold room. For a city guy you know a fair bit. Cheers from Sunny Alberta!
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms If you make the braid three days after harvesting it will still be plenty pliable .Do you really believe folks in Hungary, where plenty of Hardneck is grown don’t braid garlic?
Another great video! I have some large green onions in my Greenstalk planter. Could I do the same with these as with garlic? Many thanks from Cape Breton!!!😊😊
Awesome janice!! Green onions don't get cured as they are eaten fresh. But they do keep coming back to life even after being cut down if a bit of the white stem is left behind! 🙂
You mentioned that garlic needs to be stored in a cool, dry place. I could store it in my garage, but i live close to the Canadian border. In winter temps drop well below freezing. Will the extreme cold freeze and destroy the garlic?
I found garlic in my garden growing on the surface of the soil and then a stalk coming from it approx 3 inches straight up was more garlic growing but in the air . Have you ever seen this?
I am struggling with caterpillars! Ive tried covering my lettuce/sprouts plants, bought the organic spray, I've used DE, I've tried soap water. Absolutely nothing has helped it's ridiculous. I didn't get any lettuce, collard greens this yr and it looks like they've gotten my brussel sprouts plants too!
I froze some of my hardneck garlic because I had so much and wanted to make sure I had garlic past the 6 month mark. So I used fresh for my first 6 months and then started using my frozen garlic to last me till my next harvest mis summer, that way I never have to buy garlic again.

Good day mate.
What a awesome harvest 😊.
I'm in Australia and my garlic is still growing I hope I get some like yours.
Fingers crossed for you! Let us know how it goes!
Thanks for another how-to Jeff! Take care!
This is my 3rd or 4th attempt at growing garlic! Got greens coming up so hopefully this time will be a winner! 🧄
Fingers crossed!

Once again Jeff another great and informative video. Thanks!!!

Right on....fall garlic planting is literally just around the corner!!
Tnx a lot for this. Just harvested my garlic and wasn't quite sure what is next
Will you consider doing one on curing sweet potatoes? Can I just leave them for 3 or 4 weeks in a dry place to cure?
Great idea! I just got a batch of them too!
You are an excellent teacher for everything that grows! ❤
Goal this year is to grow more than 150 bulbs!!
:)
And it's nearly planting time(already!)
That year went quickly...
Nice!!! Can't believe how fast the year goes man.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Seems to go faster (as one gets older!)
:)
Thx
@@suzannesutton5636 no problem Suzanne.
I would really like to learn more about your indoor grow box that you use to start seeds. I want to build my own and need some assistance
Definitely.... It has produced tens of thousands of plants and seedlings.... Indispensable!

Great stuff! Only problem is French Braids don't work for hardneck garlic, the kind grown in Canada. :-)

Any steps to share for ones to save and to plant in Oct/Nov?

I found garlic in my garden growing on the surface of the soil and then a stalk coming from it approx 3 inches straight up was more garlic growing but in the air . Have you ever seen this?
I'm at about 6 months since I planted my cloves and the tops have thinned out a lot and are about half brown and crispy. The bulbs aren't ready yet.
What does that mean just store in a cool fry place ? I really want to see exactly how you do that. Please show us
It means exactly that. 1:37 you can see it in action. Don't overcomplicate it. Its literally just hanging garlic in a dry area to fully cure.
Shoot...what has the weather been like? Different than previous years? We go in waves with the grubs and caterpillars here as well.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms in OK. The weather has been pretty dry but they're resilient little buggers. Even the heat doesn't keep them away.
Is to store garlic freezing a good idea ?
Yes, you can freeze the completely cleaned cloves. They do get a little mushy like onions do, but still completely edible!
I froze some of my hardneck garlic because I had so much and wanted to make sure I had garlic past the 6 month mark. So I used fresh for my first 6 months and then started using my frozen garlic to last me till my next harvest mis summer, that way I never have to buy garlic again.
Do you know what will happen if someone accidentally peels 4 layers instead of 1 or 2?
Nothing will "happen". The garlic will still be fine. It just won't store for as long.
