    Hang on to your seat as tight as you can because what you're about to hear will blow you away!! The YM2612 and SN76489 prove all of their badassery playing what they can play best (and the SNES sucks at): HARD ROCK AND HEAVY METAL!!
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Ho, yeah, hey!
    Pegasus steps forth with some music once again. Good? Bad? You decide.
    These videos are a little sample of what the Genesis' awesome sound chip(s) could deliver.
    The SNES had a chip (SPC700) that gained fame because it could sample instruments, whereas the Genesis' YM2612 had only one channel for samples, and the rest was all FM synthesis, paired with square waves from a second, older chip (SN76489, also found in the Master System).
    They are different and have different capabilities of their own, but there is a major asymmetry from one to the other, not related to the sound: Programming FM sounds is difficult.
    Whilst in Japan and Europe developers made absolutely amazing things with the Genesis sound, in the United States, lazy and incompetent as FUCK developers used a generic tool - an awfully bad sounding driver with utmostly primitive pre-written instruments - instead of making their own.
    This tool, "GEMS", was used in almost all U.S. made games. What did this lead to? To make people from there believe (and spread the word saying that) the Mega Drive is a terribly bad sounding system, when it could very well be the best sounding system not just in the 90's, but in all gaming history.
    Worse, Super Nintendo fanboys from then and now take pride in making comparisions using only U.S.-produced games. They've made the phrase "well, in comparision, the Genny sounds like shit" widespread.
    They don't know how wrong they are.
    So I made this series to prove it. One by one, all shall witness the chiptune magic from SEGA's console!
    Twenty five songs.
    It is dedicated to two persons: First, Cluh, who made me feel that making this series and getting it up in UA-cam was worth it.
    Not only he gave me positive feedback on it as a whole, but he went all out and gifted me what I consider the best game in my favorite console's library (and simply one of the best things I've ever played): MOTHERFUCKING THUNDER FORCE IV!!!
    I will not forget that until the day I die.
    Plus, he's cool.
    And second, my "bro". Not in the way of blood brother - the modern sense of "bro". We constantly fight over which console is better as if we were still living in 1993. We're both rabid fanboys and we love doing that, So, I won't allow him or anyone else to badmouth the Genesis, as is my favorite console of all time.
    This big headed guy dared me, saying "the only thing that it had was Sonic", so I decided not to just not include any Sonic game, but to also leave out Street Fighter 2 and all Streets of Rage games, since they are amongst the most popular of the library.
    I decided that it'd be far more interesting if I used only ONE song from each game. The only common denominator between these are the same sound chips.
    I haven't played more than 50% of the games it had; I just picked some of my favorite tunes.
    Sega CD and 32X games are out as well. No expansions. Just put the cartridges in and listen!
    I won't say the sources, but I'll give you some images and hints - very obvious ones :) You're free to guess, if you feel like doing so.
    Hey Bro! The Genesis was absolutely-fuckin'-awesome... deal with it!
    DISCLAIMER: I do not own any of the songs or images portrayed here. All artists have been given credit. This video does not intend to infringe copyright, nor to make any profit.
    PS: Big thanks to Project 2612! You guys rock!

    Yep, I'm a big-time Genesis fan. So far I've not found anything more enjoyable to me than the Genesis, but anyway, I can't really say for sure that I've heard any groundbreakingly awesome music from the Genesis that you'd like to put in your videos, but some music that isn't from a Sonic game I like comes from Road Rash II and Outrun 2019.

    When did I say Iwadare has bad guitars? I said they are hollow, and you can really tell if he uses them as a lead, like for Crusader of Centy's Boss 3 track. Otherwise, it's fine. All of what I'm saying may sound harsh, but that doesn't mean I dislike what I may come off as cold towards.
    About the songs in Makyou Toitsusen, I actually meant Hanzawa's tracks. The others make it easy to recognise the skill between him and the other composer for that game because their skills are so distant.

    One was enough for me to love SEGA forever, hahaha!
    I have a model 2, and would like to get an early model 1 too. I have a small bit of history with my model 2 it I'll tell on part 4 (in short, after 10 years of being kept in a drawer due to the absolute destruction of the AC adapter and posterior defunction of the 9 pin A/V cable as well, this week I got it to work again!!)
    I'm so happy I can't even describe it in words :)
    Thank you very much for your comments - please stay around for part 4!

    (cont'd)
    What I mean by this is that if you say "Super NES!" the answer will be, always, always, ALWAYS "Mario, Zelda, DK, FF!", whereas if you say "Genesis!" the response will be (what I said) if they hardly know the system, or it will vary incredibly from fan to fan, as there's plenty of good stuff, but no games were backed up by strong advertising back in the day.
    Luckily, even with all that the Mega Drive managed to get tons of fans!

    Dear God, YES! "Burn, Baby, Burn!" is one of the best things I have EVER heard. It's on my top 3 best remixes ever.
    I'm not a huge fan of the original, as it has great composition but little in terms of... power. Imagine Outride a Crisis with the sound engine from the third song of this video. Now THAT would be something!
    Mega Drive/Genesis is home to a big number of impressive tracks. If it weren't for U.S. made games, it wouldn't have the bad reputation it (unfairly) does.
    Oh and... thanks!

    I understand that every person has their own taste, but I like when, in my games, I press a button, and a player character jumps; I press another, and he shoots; I press another, and he picks up an item.
    I like when that character is not a still painting - it moves, it is alive (somehow) and you can tell so by just looking at him.
    None of that happens in turn based RPGs.
    That said, I absolutely adore Terranigma on the SNES and Crusader of Centy on the MD. Both japanese, and RPG games :P

  • @SpiralPegasus
    @SpiralPegasus  11 років тому

    First and foremost, thanks for the feedback!
    There's tons of issues to which I could lay the blame of the Genesis' best songs to not be known. One is the U.S. made games factor, and another, say, is that the ad department at SEGA used Sonic, Ecco and sports games as flagship series, when the console had so much more and so much better than that...

    Sure would have, but rivalry was what made them so great in the first place! It was a fight everybody got good things out of!
    I'd love SEGA to make another console, or to join forces with Ninty for the next generation. Just thoughts.
    As for Hard Corps, I thought it was bad for Konami standards. Not too bad overall, but it felt way too generic and had poor FM instrumentation overall...
    The game was good, though! Thanks for commenting!

    The Age Of series is actually the only RTS game I've ever really liked XD
    The Suzaku based boss used to end me too... until I noticed standing at the farthest left spot on the screen results in it being completely unable to harm you XD
    He's also the only enemy in the game with an elemental weakness, Water attacks deal extra to him and fire attacks do nothing

    Whilst not many, Senoue's are some of the best songs I've heard on the Genesis. Treasure guys are good indeed (being a shmup fan I know plenty about them), but... I just don't get why people love Gunstar Heroes and Alien Soldier so damn much.
    The songs themselves may be as unique as you want, but they really lack in the composition department.
    Most of them, at least...

    Hope you got that TFIV cartridge and it's compatible with your own system, because that game is region-locked! It's my favourite game, I used to play it again every weekend on my Mega Drive even years later indeed. And this year I even bought a copy that I gave to a collector friend of mine who didn't own a MD back in the day. I wanted him to know the game, because it's that good. And of course, he loves it!

    I can tolerate people being wrong, but not if that means speaking ill of the best console ever made!
    Also Europe (along with us South Americans and maybe S. Korea) gave the Mega Drive the warmest hug it ever got. The scale was all on SEGA's side there, continuing the great success of the Master System.

    Hard Corps puede tranquilamente ser el mejor Contra de todos los tiempos, pero en lo que a música respecta (para mi) es de los puntos más bajos para Konami, al menos en la Mega Drive. Don't tell me people actually think this sounds anything like genuine instruments. lol. Seriously, it sounds like a toy synthesizer from the 80s trying to mimic a guitar and drum type sound. And I'm not trying to say "oh the snes is better" I'm just being real here. None of this sounds like actual instruments, it sounds like lo-fi synthy music.

  • @jlspacemarine
    @jlspacemarine 10 років тому +2

    Oh, and by the way, I hope you're aware of TFIV's "omake" tracks, and the incredible staff roll theme, which are only available to listen in the sound test after you beat the game. They could've made another game completely with those bonus tracks alone and it still would've been great. I can't believe how many good tracks there are in one single cartridge.

    • @SpiralPegasus
      @SpiralPegasus  10 років тому

      jlspacemarine Yes, I am aware of their existance, but I haven't gone in-depth and listened to them to death like I have with stages/boss themes 1 through 8.
      I want them to be a "prize" for beating this beast of a game.
      (Warlike Requiem is the only exception to this - holy shit, what a MAGNIFICENT final boss anthem!)
      Technosoft has done this too on Devil's Crush and TF 3, IIRC.

    • @jlspacemarine
      @jlspacemarine 10 років тому +1

      Okay, I see! Well, If you ever want to get there the easy way, (wich is how I discovered those tracks first) you can always set the number of lives to zero in the options so that you get 99 of them. Not as rewarding when you get through the game, but I see that cheat as a "practice mode". And trust me, you really want to listen to those tracks. Staff roll and Omake5 are right there with stage8 as my personnal favorites. There's even an "early technosoft"-style tune (Omake2), wich I think is used in one of the extra levels of Thunder Spirits, the SNES version of Thunder Force III.

    Wily Wars lacks polish and sounds very simplistic. The instruments don't really suit the style and the instruments sound like they'd be fine with 2 operators. They could have done better. Also, Capcom didn't use GEMS for Wily Wars, it was SMPS.
    If I had to compare Wily Wars to something, it'd be Kazuo Hanzawa, Hitoshi Sakimoto, Yuzo Koshiro and all the composers from Technosoft, meaning Capcom of all companies definately could have done more.
    For the video, look up "20 Excellent Genesis Tracks".

  • @ChiptunedRaijin
    @ChiptunedRaijin 12 років тому

    Tbh, while I do like the MMX ost overall, I feel the instruments aren't too good, and they are especially terrible in X3. Of course, it could have sounded better on the Genesis, but no way Capcom would have done it any justice. Everything Capcom made on the Genesis has bad sound design.
    Anyway, I do feel that Donkey Kong track could sound nice on the YM2612. The real question is, could a Dean Evans track sound truely good with the YM2612?
    watch?v=ljhxbDd6WIo
    It would be a challenge.

    Yes, it's easily Konami's worst (in a good game, at least) but keep in mind that's because I'm comparing it to the rest of THEIR games.
    I believe the guitars were pretty bad and it was too noisy (white noise) for it's own good.
    My love for the company is endless though - Rocket Knight, Sparkster, Hard Corps, Bloodlines, Sunset Riders... not to mention, Treasure (who gave the MD GEMS like Alien Soldier, Gunstar Heroes and Light Crusader) was made out of former Konami employees.

    Oh, I hadn't received this message for some reason.
    And it seems someone (not me) disliked it...
    Being kinder would get you better results, you know?
    There are THREE Thunder Force games, and only one sounds like a mindblowing heavy metal band!
    As for the 5th game... I expected people to look up the games themselves with the hints that the text gives :/
    I mean, seriously, google "Contra Genesis Data East" and the FIRST result is Midnight Resistance!
    Google "opossum rocket jetpack", same result.

    It doesn't help that Nintendo had David Wise, Koji Kondo, Nubou Uematsu, Yasnouri Mitsuda, the Megaman team and other overpowered composes on their side. You've definitely proven that Sega also has their share of gems, But like you said before, it takes nearly a diehard fan to find most of the ones you've displayed, whereas you can ask any other Nintendo fanboy to list amazing SNES songs. In a sense it's unfair. Thanks for this series!

    Jewel Master is pretty tough. I can't even get past the firebird.
    I guess I should reword my last post like this: "I hate when (what I mentioned) doesn't happen".
    I get your point, but I expect instant responses from a machine - it "thinks" much faster than I do. I'm okay with turn based games, so long as they're Clue, Life, Monopoly... when someone not PROGRAMMED must think what to do after your actions and act in consequence.
    (continued in another post)

    Duh, I didn't say, nor imply, that CapCom used GEMS.
    They could've done better. Every game ever could have been done better.
    No, wait, not really, TF IV couldn't.
    You can't put Capcom in the same league as those guys though...
    Also your lack of Yu Suzuki, Noriyuki Iwadare, Jun Senoue and Masato Nakamura dissapoints me.
    ...talk about cookie cutter. Way too similar. Exact same idea, somewhat different execution - great quality and some fine songs.
    Well, having more proof can never hurt, I guess!

    And... part 2 too, while you're at it, lol.
    Duuuuuuuuuuude! Dave Evans?!
    GeckoYamori man!! Never heard of him? I guarantee you'll thank me for mentioning him. That guy has done boner inducing versions of great SNES songs in Genesis format. (Evans is an A+ composer, by the way!)

    The reason why I have 3 Sega consoles now is because my first Nomad had a DC jack issue right from the start, then later it refused to run on batteries, and I got another Nomad, and later it eventually developed the same issue with the DC jack, but it still runs on batteries, and thus, I still use it. Then, I got a Genesis, and I don't think I really could be happier. Also, my model 1 is early too, it says High Definition Graphics. You should get one like that, they're really nice!

    "Hey SPC700, where are you now? I can't hear your puny trumpets over my glorious metal guitars! Could you do this? I doubt it! Manly games were not your thing!"
    THIS! Hahahaha! Hilarious, yet so much satisfying to read while listening to the best guitar shredding the genesis has ever reproduced. Man, thank you so much. Being a Sega Genesis fan is hard on youtube, as we are constantly dealing with some shallow nintendo-brainwashed ignorants. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who feels the urge to express my enthusiasm towards genesis music in such an over-hyped and passionate way. Great series of videos, mate. And most of all, perfect choice of tracks. All of these tunes are either already know favorites of mine, or new ones that you just made me discover. And I've been through a lot of genesis music, so that's an achievement. Cheers from Canada!

      jlspacemarine 'kay, this comment just made my day, ha ha.
      Million thanks to you and your truly enthusiastic feedback!!
      No kill is better than OVERKILL and no hype is better than OVERHYPE!
      You can extend that statement to the whole web. No "professional" nor popular reviewers seem to value FM music over SNES samples.
      The internet seems to be slowly trying to erase Genesis off of history (or at least take all credit from it, saying it's "Sonic, inferior ports and sports games").
      Raging fanboyism? From people like AVGN, definitely. But for the majority, I believe it's just ignorance. And I've made it my mission to fix that - thus, the series was born. 6K views after, I think I've managed to change some people's views on the most badass 16 bitter's sound (and library) upside down. And boy does that makes me happy!
      I'm seriously glad you liked what you've seen - it's the approval of fans that moves the series forward :)
      Shout out if you happen to find a game whose name you don't know!
      Cheers from the end of the world!

    • @jlspacemarine
      @jlspacemarine 10 років тому

      SpiralPegasus Actually, on a smaller scale, I've been on the same mission for quite a while now. As I love to show to my friends at home how the music in Turtles in time is in most ways inferior to hyperstone heist. I plug both games running the same song in the sound test on my 1200w professional PA speakers (yes, I like my old school games to sound like a rock concert) and then I switch the input between the two. Most of em end up like, "damn, I never knew the genesis had that much depth in the music" I even had the idea to make a video about it, but never took the time... yet.

    • @SpiralPegasus
      @SpiralPegasus  10 років тому

      jlspacemarine So do I! VGM sounds best when played loud!
      I guess my neighbors don't like FM synths and chiptunes as much as I do though, lol.
      I don't own a pro speaker set (...yet), but I borrow my father's sometimes. As it's connected to an LCD gives an ugly image quality, but the sound is amazing. Blasting Mega Drive music through the four speakers and being able to control trebles and bass independently without using filters means I can get to appreciate all 10 sound channels all the time without muffling any. Frick'n sweet.
      You know... what you do is a good thing.
      Take it a step higher!
      Man, get your hands on a flash cartridge.
      The MD Everdrive (that I have, and recommend) allows you to load every game on a single SD card. That way you could show them a lot of good-sounding games, including the cases where there's multiplatform ones and the devs of the Genesis version actually KNEW how to use the YM2612.
      Or, you could just hook up a common PC/laptop with a decent sound board to your set and play a certain series called "25 Kickass Non-Sonic SEGA Genesis songs".
      I heard it's pretty good! And it would save you time, effort and money! :P
      But seriously that'd be awesome. THAT would be sharing it in the BEST concievable way.

    • @jlspacemarine
      @jlspacemarine 10 років тому

      Yeah, I do own an Everdrive MD. I like to play imports and hacks on it. As well as rare shit that I'll probably never own. But speaking of imports, what's the name of that RPG that sounds like megaman X? I know I'm missing a a lot of good sounding imports, like that shinobiIII-esque soundtrack of "Aah! Harimanada" I just discovered last month. Good stuff!

    • @SpiralPegasus
      @SpiralPegasus  10 років тому

      jlspacemarine
      You mean the "Mega Man X wishes it'd have been released on Genesis just so it could sound like this" game? Langrisser II, it is.
      Anything but my type of game, really. If only it would've been an action RPG type... would've been an entirely different story :(
      There's no sound test to be found, so, unless you're willing to play the 20 hour campaign, I'd suggest you visit Project 2612. These are the two other "best" songs IMO: v=70A6jIRF9Zw and this (ending, possible spoilers): v=I12K8_T4fOY
      Never heard of Harimanada, I'll check it out!

    @SpiralPegasus  12 років тому

    Weren't "Technosoft" and "shoot-em-up" a dead giveaway? :P
    Also come on, this one's better than everything I've heard out of TF3 (I wholeheartedly believe TF4 is one of the best games ever done by man, by the way).

  • @SpiralPegasus
    @SpiralPegasus  11 років тому

    No offense taken and thanks for the compliment :)
    You talkin' with the biggest TF nut (and maybe Genesis') in Earth. Only TF2, 3 and 4 came out. 2 was also on the SharpX68K, and 3, with some differences, on SNES and arcade as well.
    TF1 was confined to the Sharp X1. It looked awful anyway.
    Light"E"ning Force was the U.S. version of TFIV, yes.
    Lastly they each sounds fairly different. Compare this: v=dbFlcOsT2MU to this v=_ZpGeehryl4 to... THIS v=-VzLxWBho-8

  • @SpiralPegasus
    @SpiralPegasus  12 років тому

    Sure are, that's why I want one :)
    Sucks about your Nomad(s), but hey, you got two, and they are pretty valuable, I've heard. Hey given seem to be a Genny fan to the bone like I am, do you have any song from any game you'd like to be featured?
    Maybe there is something out there I haven't heard yet...
    (keep in mind the very high standard of parts 1-3!)

  • @SpiralPegasus
    @SpiralPegasus  11 років тому

    If I had to kill a man to play TFIV in my good ol' Genny, I probably would.
    I've been aching to get my hands on it for YEARS, but I live in a country where tech in general is absurdly expensive and importing is hard. Having no means to do so on my own and having a small wage doesn't make it any easier.
    Audio quality wise, off of what I have, it doesn't sound -worse- when emulated. If anything it's just different.
    I bless those who wrote emulators - this series wouldn't be here if not for them!

  • @SpiralPegasus
    @SpiralPegasus  12 років тому

    Ah, I thought you were a typical SNES fanboy that came here to bother :P
    Mega Man X on the Genesis wouldn't just have been awesome. It'd have redefined the word "awesome" itself.
    To me X1-3 do milk the SPC700, and sound truly majestic on their own right, but I can't shake the feeling that Genny could do shredding guitars so much better than a chip aimed to recreate orchestral sounds.
    Another I'd like to hear in FM is this: watch?v=xNKsL_Gr1qY.

  • @SpiralPegasus
    @SpiralPegasus  12 років тому

    Capcom's sound driver is decent to me, and I really like how it works in Wily Wars. Wily Tower stage 4 specially - that one is on par with the rest of the songs so far.
    If you say "sub-par" you gotta say what you're comparing it with - it may be sub par in my compilation but overall it ain't that bad. Remember 75% of U.S. made Genesis games... *cough*GEMS*cough*. If that's in the scale, Capcom's driver would be worth applauding.
    50 minutes of FM synthesis? You better point me where that is!
