    My most recent car, low mileage, great condition, 12 years old, had fault with a steering torque sensor (which i think is why the last owner sold it), slightly harder to turn one way, dealerships want £2500 to replace the steering rack, because they won't replace the sensor, I took the sensor apart in situ and filled it with silicone lubricant, problem disappeared, it's a known problem that the factory installed lubricant turns into a solid mass by he time the car hit's 90k miles and it starts to wear down the plastic sensor ring (mine has done 60k).
    The reason repairs are so expensive is because dealerships have a "first time fix" policy, they will replace an entire assembly instead of just the faulty part, so it's almost impossible to get the individual parts cheaply and you have to fork out half the cars value for a fault that may just be a plastic clip on a £50 sub-assembly. But then they also now code parts arbitrarily to the cars ECU, so that even if you replace it, it won't work without franchised dealership intervention.

      Indeed. If you describe the product you are selling as an Iphone 12, the buyer can assume it has all the working functionality of a new Iphone 12. The seller can't just say "it still makes and receives calls" if the camera doesn't work. People buy from dealers rather than privately in part because of the legal protection this gives them.

    Forget it. Car manufacturers have spent a fortune on R&D relating to corrosion, but that is small mercy on a 10 year old car that has failed due to an electronic/software issue. All cars manufactured in the past 10 years and going forward will be scrapped unless you spend a fortune at a specialist or dealer garage trying to diagnose CPU/software issues. Even then it may not be economical to repair. The stories I am hearing are scary. The value of older cars with limited CPU/software interference will skyrocket. Mark my words.

      The used car market is drying up because owners are hanging on to them, even spending £1-2k on repairs is worth it now, as a decent used car will remain a high end car. Even a basic EV costs £25k+ and anything decent with a rubbish range is £60k. The £15k penalty will make it worse. Far better to keep a quality ICE car up to spec than spend silly money on a new one that will lose £5k+ in the first 12 months.

    No parking sensors, radar, electric windows, alloy wheels etc etc as opposed to these mobile computers.
    In fact, I would even go back to carburettors instead of EFI.
    I hate just waiting for stuff to fail because of a cheap plastic component that can only be purchased and fitted by some spotty youth for a king's ransom!
    Sorry, rant over.

      not a car guy myself, but motorbikes - i share your sentiment. bikes are now coming stuffed full of electronics. gah.
      i mean, it is fine as an option, but it isn't an option. really annoying.

    Yes it's funny how the government has had more out of some products than the manufacturer or someone like yourselves reselling cars, so why are they exempt from any liability that they have had cut out of .

      You only have to look at HGV’s, the Government makes far more on each truck than the operator, with VED costing £1000’s & 60% tax on each litre of fuel.
      They can’t even provide decent overnight parking for them either after taking all that tax!

    Ironically manufacturers usually warranty their cars from new for 3 years 30,000 miles. Because they know it’s normal wear and tare after that and they won’t be held liable.
    Once it’s sold as second hand, a 12 year old car, say, is considered differently for some reason and everything should work? . FFS

    you take out the radar , replace the grill and remove off the computer ? insurance companies know what should be on that car and if you have a accident and a missing radar could of stopped it happening are you not liable ? sounds well dodgy to me and shouldn’t be done , the customer could also invalidate there insurance and have it cancelled as the car has been modified from standard how it left the factory

      Whats so great about main dealers ? Most don't give a shit once you've handed over your cash and will try every trick in the book to get out of warranty work. When it comes to servicing they are simply robbing b*stards.

    With regard to the Radar problem, you guys are getting a bit hysterical about this. In time little companys will spring up who will offer you a postal repair service to repair your radar units for a reasonable price, just like has happened with Engine management units. As the demand for these repairs rises so will the supply, simples !!

    • @fredfred2363
      @fredfred2363 3 дні тому

      Not so simple. If only....
      Diagnosing the problem is the main issue because the manufacturer won't release their intellectual property (software codes). And part swapping requires coding, to allow any replacement parts to work with the onboard computers. No different to replacing the battery in new mobile phones... won't work without an authorisation code.

    No point complaining about stuff. You all went into the business knowing the negatives. If you sell second hand straight from auction stuff. You're going to get issues. Even second hand straight from a private seller could have hidden issues. Car dealers never complain about having a good year. Suck it up buttercup.

    • @mbak7801
      @mbak7801 3 дні тому

      Time for the dealers to move up market and leave the cheap end. Eventually the marginal customers will just have to buy privately for cash and take the hit on any repairs. Even at the £5K level they should with luck get two years out of a car before scrapping it. I guess the problem will be if they are sold a scrap car in the first place which privately gives them zero comeback. As you say they will have to 'suck it up' and save another £5k and have another go.

    No one wants a new EV, you aren’t going to have any takers for ten year old rolling fire hazards 😂😂😂😂😂. They will be gone soon, manufacturers will have to stand up at some point and refuse to comply with government lies and climate bollox and revert to petrol or they will become history. It’s clear when a company like Porsche won’t take back in part ex their OWN EV rubbish unless you are buying another one that there is no market for the tacky crap.
