    Yesterday, a boy ahead of me in the check out line at the grocery store bought a plastic egg filled with little chocolates. I tested the sound of the candy container by shaking it. It was an okay rattle. The plastic boxes of Tic Tacs made better rattles. Surprisingly, each box of Tic Tacs had a different sound! I bought a box of the wintergreen Tic Tacs. It's working as a rattle just great.

    incredible story. I own a set of rattles but they dont look like any of the ones you showed. Its made from nut casings of the Ayayote (Chachayote) tree and instead of being enclosed they are strung together and clash against each other to make sound. What are your thoughts on these?

    One of the wisdoms I love that Gerry shares is his way of connecting and always paying tribute to the voice of ‘other’ - developing relationships thru hearing 🙏👌🏼

    I made a drum beater with steel rings attached and it rattles/jingles. It had become a powerful tool for me. Could I also use it the same as a rattle to clear the field around me?

    • @GerryStarnes

      Very creative. And of course, if the sound or steel rings resonates with you, a rattle is a rattle. I prefer a softer sound, personally. :)

      @@GerryStarnes This one actually turned out somewhat soft because the rings didn't jingle as loudly as I thought I wanted. I actually tried the technique of rattling for purification and it seems to work!

    I was at a market and I instantly connected with a rattle I saw at a vendor. I played around a bit with it but didn't buy it. Afterwards I couldn't stop thinking about this rattle and I had to message the vendor if she still had it and she did!! I am beside myself and I am so grateful we'll be reunited soon 🙏🏻 thank you for this informational video!

    I was hoping you would show a turtle shell rattle. I am going to attempt to hand make mine but have never made one before.

    Thank you! Very helpful. I am participating at an online Shamanic Circle on Saturday and am asked to bring a rattle or drum. Unfortunately I won’t be able to get one until then. I am contemplating getting tic tacs. I’m wondering if that is disrespectful in some way.

    • @GerryStarnes
      @GerryStarnes  3 роки тому

      While I have experienced a shaman using a borrowed box of TicTacs when he forgot to bring his rattles, I completely understand your concern. TicTacs have a high, "plastic" sound that I find disquieting. Some "magik" and drum shops sell palm-sized rattles. Seeds in a wooden container or something similar would be better (IMHO).
      That said, shamanic practice is ultimately practical. You use what you have at hand. Striking two sticks together or thumping your chest can also work in a pinch. The point is not the form but the intention and sacred focus.

    I was recently homeless. A friend of mine said I could keep my things at her place. Her boyfriend decided to keep my stuff as his own. You know, stealing from homeless people is totally acceptable behavior of course.
    I keep remmebering the things he stole. Watching this I realize I need to buy a new maraca. I really liked my old one but thats what I get for losing my home. I told her, I dont care about the stuff, her friendship means more to me than any object or mass of objects. She doesnt speak to me anymore.
    Okay. Best of luck to her! She's got quite a lonely road ahead of her.
