    Really cool but you should find a heat block with the fins oriented in the other direction. Then they got in the same direction as the air flow. I assume if its exactly 25x25 you can rotate it and it fit just the same. The only issue may be the back frame that holds it in palce may not work as well.

    FYI, NAND flash actually WANTS to be hot. The memory controller, yes, cooler is better. But for the actual memory chips, cooler is worse below a certain point. 90c is too high, yes, but 50c is too low for NAND flash. You can find hard numbers, but the gist is that data stored cold is more volatile and will degrade (if unpowered) significantly faster than data written hot. Pretty sure you shorten lifetime TB/W too. LTT had a deep dive video a few years ago.
    Normally on a 3rd gen 2280 you'd only apply thermal pads to the controller, and the heatspreader/label is enough for the memory. I'm not 100% sure about these smaller 4th Gen drives however.

    • @cppctek
      @cppctek  Рік тому

      Gen 4 drives run hot. Run any temp monitoring software and alarm bells go off if you run the sn740 without a heatsink or making the gen 4 2230s. 2230s are monsters with less surface area to disperse heat.

    • @Leo9ine
      @Leo9ine Рік тому

      @@cppctekhat makes a lot of sense, a 2TB 2230 4th gen is gonna be a hell of a lot hotter than a 2280 3rd gen or the stock 512gb 2230. I'll do some testing once I get my 740!

  • @xgeko2

    You should get another one of the copper shim style ones and instead of bending it push it on as is. I think those are designed to be a friction fit and when I installed mine I simply pushed it on with my fingers and I got much better results than you are listing in your tests.

    I may try this. Seems like a great way to get temps for that down. Have you tried changing out the thermal paste? I saw a video showing the thermal paste in the unit isn’t great from the factory. Haven’t looked myself other than replacing the NVMe drive.

    • @cppctek
      @cppctek  Рік тому

      Thermal paste may drop apu temps 2c at best. Not worth voiding the warranty over currently. However this heatsink mod for the nvme will significantly improve longevity of the nvme and sustained read and write temps under stress.

    • @Leo9ine
      @Leo9ine Рік тому +3

      Dude the paste on the APU is great. It isn't even paste, it's a Honeywell phase-change pad. I've seen liquid metal having zero benefit. If you want your temps down, limit it to 20w. I've found incredibly small FPS gains going from 20w to 40w but temps went 70 to 95

    Excellent discovery. Have you tested orientation of the fins, horizontal vs vertical? Based on fan intake position and the slots in the rear of the Ally, a horizontal orientation may cause the least amount of airflow reduction.

    Would you suggest going to 24 or 32 gb of ram . I was gonna send mine off for like 300$ but you cant udate the bios after the install . Thats what has me on the fence but they should be done with good bios updates. I really dont want to buy the X but want the ram 😂

    • @cppctek
      @cppctek  2 місяці тому +1

      Wait for the full reviews come out comparing the ally x to the ally og. Also have you ever seen benchmarks for the ally upgrade? I sure haven’t. It’s extremely sus to me why we haven’t got a flood of videos proving the success. That’s the biggest and easiest way to convince people to buy the ram mod and would increase sales soooooooooo much. Massssssive incentive for that… so I ask myself well… that’s obviously going to increase sales so why wouldn’t someone take 5 mins to benchmark a before and after shot?….. that’s like extremely sus.
      I’ve got my theories on the upgrade but I can’t prove it. What I can prove is that one of the guys who was also doing the ram upgrades was having major issues … several things occurred. 1: he had a bad batch of chips 2: having a bad batch of chips means he had to solder and desolder the ram several times till he found good chips. Boards sometimes got destroyed because of being heated up too much. Silicon has its limits….. then he ended up closing up shop! Guy couldn’t do it anymore at a loss. So that I can prove, the other thing I can prove is another guy who does gpu repair made a video warning people about really bad memory chips coming out of China as well…. I’ve seen enough to make me compelled to not suggest it anymore until I see real proof 1: the device performs better in both benchmarks and games that can take advantage of more ram: 2: no ones having any long term issues. Bga soldering always is slightly risky and it’s a fine fine art. So just tread carefully. I think you’d be better off selling your ally for 400$, putting 300$ cash on top and buying an ally x. I also know armory crate tries to update bios automatically and what happens if you click it by accident? So many unknowns and no one in my community has done it so I can’t validate or support anything without proof

      @@cppctek do you think about something else? I mean, maybe a good termal paste instead of the oem?

    • @cppctek
      @cppctek  Рік тому +1

      I just went live last night. I re pasted with kingpin kpx. The best of the best paste. Dropped 3c and have zero performance difference. Unlike intel CPUs and Nvidia gpus, amd apus don’t scale with lower temps the same. I’ve shown it and several others including pc world channel on UA-cam. 300k subs. It’s not worth it. Zero gain + huge risk. It’s not worth voiding warranty
