Thanks for a detailed yet short review. Just what I needed to answer my questions.
Great review, especially the compression test. Absolutely true about the wheels, they do not roll well on old farm concrete. I had one of these hoists before moving and it was the most appreciated tool when it was needed. Besides lifting machines, I used it to lift sheetrock to finish a shop ceiling.
Just bought the same one and about to assemble it to pull a motor out of a 1997 Land Cruiser. Love your review video, very useful in making a choice on which engine hoist to buy
I just purchased a 1 ton. Did the job with no problems whatsoever. An excellent cherry picker (engine hoist). Yes, the distance each pump of the hydraulic jack that raises the arm isn't much but that's by design. If you know anything about safety, stress and lifting heavy objects... then you should also know that each increment in the move upward gives the lifter a chance to check on the stability of whats being lifted and what is being used in conjunction with the chain - rope... straps... etc.
A GREAT addition to this hoist is the pneumatic hydraulic ram. I have had mine for years and lifts everything in no time at all!
Harbor Freight sells a 8 Ton Long Ram Air/hydraulic jack which would replace the manual one that is on those Hoists which would make raising and lowering the arm much easier and faster, but when you are using it for removing or installing an engine you need the precise movements of that manual jack. Although you could always swap between the factory jack and the air/hydraulic jack depending on what you are using it for as I believe the jack is held on with a couple of bolts...and I'm sure you probably could replace those bolts with some sort of quick disconnect type pins to more quickly swap between the manual and air jacks.

Good review. Love that Harbor Freight now links to (actually critical) independent reviews. Realizing I could use one of these for more than just engine removal. Hmmm.
How much slop is in the legs when they are down in the lift position? I plan on lifting an engine that's a 1000 lbs and I dont want to feel nervous about it in the air. The pinned legs just seem like they would have slop in them vs lifts with removable legs that slide inside the square tubing frame
So how do you lower the items you hoist? Does the handle turn or is something on the side?
Do you think this would be strong enough and tall enough to pull motor out of a school bus motor is a Chevy BB 427 with the transmission

And yes the only issue i have had is that when pinning the legs for use it is pain in the ass to get the pin in..so i just get a 1x piece of wood and put the wheels (that are near the pin area) on the wood to prop it up and pin goes in fine...
I just use the jacking handle to pry up and get pin lined up.
Yes ill have to buy a canadian curling broom.
So, replace the piston with a double pump you can get one for $58 on Amazon. You can also replace wheels for $24.

Was that a Deckel 2D pantograph you unloaded from the pickup?
My issue is the pin holes on the legs are not aligned which makes setting the legs very inconvenient. Got any tricks?
The hoist is designed so only 4 wheels touch the ground at any given time. The outside wheels are about 4" in diameter and the middle wheels are about 3 inch in diameter. What I do is roll the middle wheels up on top of a small piece of scrap 5/8 inch plywood or larger and the legs just go down and holes align. Or sometimes I just lift at the middle wheel but this is a lot more effort.

on my hoist i milled the hole bigger so they could aling :(
It's too bad that within a few years this goes on "sale" for more than what it is listed as retail when you bought it for $170.00 ($250 Black Friday). Too bad!
Works fine very good tool to have at home or shop...great for moving items you wouldnt b able to,do,without alone.....steel wheels are needed due to,weight put on them..steel wheels should last many many years..if they were plastic or rubber im sure they would just fall apart within a short time...so saying steel wheels is a bad idea is an incorrect statement...
You need to sweep your floor well, just like they do in curling, along your intended path for the lift.
I have two of these. I use them to hang and menuever my 2 beautiful realistic sex dolls. Theye 5'8" 100lbs. I just pop their heads off and screw an eyebolt into the neck. They work great. A solid, quality product. I definitely recommend.
