Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed the video. If you have fished the Ngongotaha before leave some tips for new anglers in the comments if you can to help them get a few.
Hi, I think that you have covered the Ngongotaha River access quite well. There are not that many streams that you can fish in the Rotorua area as most of the fishing is done on boats or the channel between the lakes. I use to do a lot of night fishing at the river mouths as I had a farm at Hamurana and could fish the mouth at the right time when the fish were in situ. There is a trick of fishing Hamurana river mouth by going out into the lake just past the little drop off, turning your back to the lake, and fishing the shore line for cruising brown trout. There have been some monsters caught using this technique and I watched one angler take well over 40 minutes to land a 17 pounder! The trouble I found was that using a big rod and line stuffed up my shoulder and I so love fishing rivers as its a bit more like hunting, the expectation and continuously changing river is hard to beat for thrills; reminds me of hunting on horseback in the Rift Valley in my young days!
Thanks you. I do enjoy the stream mouths at night as well. Good fun hen a solid fish takes off in the shallows. My PB is from the ngongothaha mouth. A brown as can be expected. Only learnt about the great sight fishing late this summer. Will be giving it a go next year. Would love to visit the rift valley one day. Not been north of the Caprivi yet but been most places south of that.
Crazy About Fly Fishing Forget the Rift Valley, those days are gone. The one place you should check out on the log pool on Lake Oketaina. When the lake is low you can walk to it using the right hand side along the lake shore. There is a stream that comes out of the bush into the lake and the mouth is really worth fishing and the trout are fantastic. The lake is really spooky at night as there are eyes in the bush looking at you and when there is a mist on the lake and a slight quake watch out for the waka full of Maori paddlers! The fish size minimum use to be 55cm and the trout are the best tasting in the region. You can fish from the beach or the landing but there is a huge amount of weed, not wort it in my opinion. Harera
Did better than me on the tong on Friday. On Saturday I hit a lake by kayak to the south and got 40+ and then left my dry bag behind with wallet and cameras. Lucky me lol! Good vid man
Man that's not good about the wallet and cameras. Good work on the lake though I was on the Tong Friday, shame I didn't know you were there. I did well on the Friday morning.
Great video! Looked like a good morning! I love fly fishing for trout. It's too hot for them here though. But largemouth bass are so much fun to catch! It's even better when you catch them with something you tie! Also your channel looks like a great channel with a lot more great videos to come! I subscribed!
Thanks for the sub, appreciate it. I have caught a few largemouth bass on fly while living in South Korea a few years back. Loved it, especially on surface flies. My one and only overseas guided fly fishing trip was floating down a river for smallmouth near Chicago. That was heaps of fun. Hard fighting fish too.
@@CrazyAboutFlyFishing yes topwater is great!. Especially with fish as aggressive as bass. A few weeks ago I caught another really aggressive fish. A Bowfin, not on the fly rod, but it was and amazing fight! It was about 7lbs. Now I just want to catch another except with my fly rod. But the only places I've fished are in the US but I definitely want to try and fish some overseas. One trip I've been thinking about us Argentina. Go shoot dove for a day then try and catch a Golden Dorado on a fly rod.
Oh, it's lots of fun getting up at 2am to go fishing 4 hours away 😭 Best of luck with that. Take up some saltfly, plenty of options for that in Auckland.
I've spent a lot of time wading this stream, so I'm not too worried. You do have to watch the soft sand and be careful where and at what levels you cross. But generally, not many worries here compared to big rivers like the Tongariro. You do always need to be careful wading, though.
