    After saying "I'm tired and sick. I need some water" Jane faints in Mr. R's arms. That faint was done very well! She didn't just sink gracefully into his arms...she fainted! He almost missed catching her!

      Ciaran Hinds portrays Rochester very close to the book's version. Physically, he was the closest to Rochester: black hair, a "decisive nose", a "colourless, olive face, square, massive brow, broad and jetty eyebrows, deep eyes, strong features," and a "firm, grim mouth". He's not handsome and his temperament is dark and moody, sexually intense, mysterious, emotional, troubled, and arrogant. He's not remotely "nice". Most women don't like his portrayal, which is likely due to him not appearing to be classically handsome and he's borderline brutish when Jane chose to leave him.

      I do like this version since it shows how much emotion Rodchester is displaying to downplay the outright affair they were having. Jane is someone who does the right thing by her even if she appears cold and unemotional, while Rodchester is passionate about the wrongs he has done. They’re polar opposites when the truth comes out, affirming to Jane how much they aren’t truly equals in this situation and she needs to leave

      @EmilyGreene1984 most people tend to over romanticize Rochester. They forget he is a downright narcissist. He manipulates jane, strings along the other woman, using her as a ploy to get jane to admit her feelings, then tries to hide his marriage and marry jane as quickly as possible, then when the whole thing blows up in his face, first he tries to plead with her, then accuses her of using him for his money.

    This is the epitome of a Byronic hero. Rochester is broody, moody, violent, desperate, passionate and sensual in this scene. He throws away societal expectations in this scene with Jane, the constraints of his class have disappeared and the gloves are truly off.

    Timothy's Rochester is best Rochester because he's the only one who gets the dangerous aspect of Rochester's nature down pat. Rochester is still a Byronic figure, and yet most actors choose to leave this part of his character in the dust.

      I think Ciaran Hinds version was over the top and just an asshole who I felt no sympathy for at all. They romanticized and sexualized Toby Stephens Rochester too much. I think Dalton’s Rochester is perfect, too. He’s got the somewhat manic depressive, melodramatic, and barely self-controlled temper of the character perfectly. He’s not without sympathetic qualities of vulnerability, self-control, and tragedy though.

And then the part where he's carrying her downstairs and after his story he pleads with her to stay. So romantic! He's my favorite Rochester. I have rewatched so many versions of Jane Eyre and have always come back to this one, I love it! It's so book accurate and the performances given by both lead characters are so true to the characters portrayed in the book. Dalton is wildly passionate, but so loving, and Clarke is so cool and collected; even though she may seem bored, if you concentrate on her face (hard to with Dalton there, I know) she's really trying to convey all the inner feelings and thoughts of Jane without being overtly dramatic which would be a terribly hard thing to do. Her voice takes a little getting used to, that is true, but she's putting her best into playing a character that has a hell of a lot of inner dialogue and she's not doing too bad a job. (Not as good as Mia Wasikowska, though, she was such a fantastic Jane, if only she was in a better adaptation!) I definitely feel that no adaptation of Jane Eyre has ever really nailed everything, but this one certainly nails the characters and dialogue which is really the most important thing in a romance.

      +StrawbeatlePie23 I so totally agree with you. This is the first JE movie I saw in the early 90's. I read Jane Eyre when I was a senior in high school and fell in love with the story. I was always the under dog and I always route for the underdog. This movie is almost like watching a play on TV. I bought this DVD. This is the closest to the actual book. Some parts like her running to him in the field after he had been away but that's just normal of adaptions You know what's interesting I googled her the actress and she sales real estate now in England. I think Timothy Dalton lives in Cali now. He is so good looking and he still looks good for a man of 71. Just think few years later he was James Bond. Sexy man. He has a son by a former girlfriend that had a baby by Mel Gibson you know back when those tapes of him ranting and raving at her. I think she was out for another meal ticket. Dalton didn't marry her either but he's been a good father to his teenage son. I think this is my favorite adaptation. I like it kept close to the book which described Rochester as a muscular built man with thick black hair but average height. Dalton is over 6 feet 1 or 2. In the novel claimed Rochester wasn't the classical handsome of the time but to me that is what I call ruggedly handsome. rowr rowr. Stud muffin!

      Omg same! I love the 2006, but I was so disappointed they replaced this scene with the bed one. This is one of my favorite parts in the book and frankly I think it is important for part of Mr. Rochester's character. In the 2006 one, he was all passion and temptation by way of lust to Jane. This one and the book portrays Rochester's desire, agony, and fury, and a true weakness, but his manipulation and lack of integrity in this moment.

    • @OreadNYC
      @OreadNYC 4 роки тому +15

      Well, in all fairness, that line in this day and age would immediately ruin Rochester as a romantic hero in most women's eyes and make him look more like the villain of a melodrama. Most modern women after hearing that line would be thinking "No, you WON'T, asshole!" and wholeheartedly agree that Jane needs to leave him. That being said, when you evaluate their relationship critically and objectively, the truth is that Rochester actually ISN'T a very good romantic hero at this point even without that line -- no matter how good he thinks his intentions toward Jane might have been -- and it's not until after he loses Jane that he realizes how misguided his actions were.

    When we were reading this book in school, this is the adaption that our teacher showed us as we read it. Granted, that was in 2002 so obviously 2006 Jane Eyre didn't exist yet but yeah. Me being the giant hopeless romantic that I am, latched onto it, and now it's my favorite novel. But this is one of my favorite versions because accuracy and Timothy Dalton *is* and *always will be* my first thought when Rochester comes to mind. Zelah Clarke is also fantastic in her own right, and while they're not my favorite Jane and Rochester chemistry-wise, they're in the top three.

    Well back then in 1848 blond hair/fair complexion was the rage, so he would fit Rochester's not being conventionally thought of as handsome. He also was described though as being athletic with wide shoulders etc. which also would have been viewed as common , like a laborer, not a gentlemen from what I have read of that period.

      He's actually not trying to pull anything here (in the sense of possibly trying to get her drunk so that he can take advantage of her). In the period in which this story is set, most people viewed wine or brandy as suitable remedies for people who were feeling faint as a result of severe emotional shock such as Jane is experiencing here. They thought small quantities of brandy in particular would stimulate cardiac efficiency which would help make the person feel better and more awake -- and it often was effective, even though there was still a great deal which even medical professionals didn't understand about the workings of the human body.

      the Jane Eyre in the book is meant to be a quiet woman with a very passionate inner self. This scene is exactly how the book intended to portray it - she's falling apart inside but holding strong against his passion trying to break through her resolve. In fact, a key scene in the '06 version renders Jane's character unrecognizable as she rolls around in bed with Rochester *after* she's learned of Bertha's existence and the ruined wedding. Agree. Had 1983 version had a bit of 2006's expression, lightness and emotions, it would have been perfect. Had 2006 version been a bit more true to book and not so simplified at times, it wolud have been perfect. I like 2006 version, but I must admit I'm impressed with Dalton and Clarke. I think they are well chosen for their roles. The only thing that annoys me a bit are their facial expressions. But for this scene, they are almost the same throughout the whole film - Maybe it's supposed to be so, yet it looks so stiff and unnatural sometimes.

    • @OreadNYC
      @OreadNYC 4 роки тому +2

      What's not to like, girls?
      Quite a lot, actually, when you look at Rochester and his relationship with Jane critically and objectively.
      Let's face it...Jane would never have allowed herself to develop an emotionally intimate relationship with Rochester in the first place, let alone agree to marry him, if she'd known he was already married. To do so would have put her reputation and entire future at stake -- because governesses usually came from good families and had young girls in their charge, their conduct was expected to be above reproach. If it wasn't, they could very easily find themselves out of a job and unable to get another. Rochester is not really a bad man but he is a rather selfish one in the sense that his relationship with Jane is based on lies he's primarily using for his own benefit so that he won't lose her (even though by keeping her, he would have inevitably hurt her). His intentions toward Jane are generally good -- he clearly has sincere affection for her and wants to please her -- but he's not above trying to manipulate her (using Blanche Ingram to make her jealous). He also assumes that what will make him happy will and should make her happy, but this is a self-serving assumption which doesn't really take her needs and feelings into account. In the end, what Rochester does to Jane is actually not that much different from what his father and brother did to him when they lied to him about his wife's predisposition to mental illness in order to avoid splitting up the family estate. His motive is better than theirs in the sense that he has feelings for Jane and wants to do good things for her...but that isn't enough to make up for the damage it would have done to Jane deep down once she knew the truth.

    Timothy Dalton makes a perfectly passionate Mr. Rochester. For the most part Zelah Clark made a good Jane. I loved her passionate outburst and "silent weeping" in the proposal scene of this version. However, in this scene she portrays a very drained and dispassionate Jane. Timothy Dalton is giving it his all, while It looks like Zelah just got bored during this scene, and wants to go and take a nap off set. This Jane didn't even give Rochester a goodbye kiss on the cheek, while saying "God bless you." Maybe, when they shot this Zelah was having a bad day.

    • @OreadNYC
      @OreadNYC 7 років тому +27

      Actually, this scene is fairly true to the book. Jane is supposed to be very drained at this point because she's been in her room for several hours and hasn't eaten -- that plus the shock of everything that has happened to her makes her nearly faint, which is why he carries her down the stairs. I think Clark is also trying to depict just how steely Jane's resolve is -- Jane can't afford to let herself feel too much at this point because if she gives into her emotions, she might not be able to do what she knows she must.

    • @OreadNYC
      @OreadNYC Рік тому +2

      Actually, divorce *did* exist in those days but the court typically only granted it in extreme cases where there was significant cause such as abandonment or cruelty. Unless I'm very much mistaken, Jane Austen (who predated Bronte) states in "Sense And Sensibility" that Colonel Brandon's childhood sweetheart Eliza who was forced to marry Brandon's brother ended up divorced -- he only married her for her money and she was so unhappy that she was seduced by another man and became pregnant, so her husband most likely divorced her for adultery and threw her out.
      Rochester by way of contrast was not free to divorce his wife because she was insane and therefore not responsible for her actions and not able to consent to the divorce. Rochester also wanted to spare her the horror of being placed in an asylum -- even though it was a torment for him to be married to her and he thought about committing suicide, he kept the oath he had made to look after her. He says in the book that had he chosen to do so, he probably could have kept her at his other property at Ferndean where the air quality is supposedly not as good and he potentially could been rid of her that way...but he did not do it because it was dishonorable.
