It’s hard to imagine a more often recommended, versatile pair of entry level hifi headphones than the Audio Technica: ATH M50Xs. Following their initial release back in 2014, the headphones became an instant success, garnering the attention of general consumers and audio enthusiasts alike. For $150, Audio Technica was offering a rather stylish, uniquely designed pair of headphones with a punchy sound that performed for just about any type of music. With the recent release of the official wireless version of these headphones, I decided it would be an ideal time to take another look at these, having now used them myself for over a year and revaluate whether they are really the jack of all trades I seemed to think they were last year. I’ve learned more about these headphones, and grown to love them even more in many ways. That being said, my time spent using them has taught me a great deal about the major strengths and weaknesses of these headphones, what they are best designed for, and who is really the ideal customer. These are a polarizing pair of headphones, an have earned passionate fans, and spawned an equally passionate group of haters. Today, we will be taking an honest look at one of the most popular pair of headphones to ever have hit the market.
Beginning with design, the swiveling earcups means the M50xs are perfect to place around your neck when not in use, as they feel far less clunky compared to most headphones which merely click together under your neck. The removable cable offering different lengths is an excellent feature, and one that should honestly be present on every pair of headphones. They were designed for portability, and offer a sleek, rather understated design without looking boring. That being said though, after using for hours on end the headphones become somewhat uncomfortable and begin to hurt your head. They clamp on pretty tight which means you don’t have to worry about them falling off, but sometimes may cause you to experience a certain degree of ear fatigue. Some have looked to replacing the earcups with ones made of softer material, but I personally haven’t myself. While the headphones aren’t what I would call uncomfortable, this is something to seriously consider if you are planning on using these for long periods at a time. All in all though, they are a very well designed pair of headphones given their price point, and have become so popular for a reason.
Sound quality is where these headphones really shine. I recently upgraded to an Audient ID44 interface and have been using the M50s exclusively with it for the last 5 months or so. When powered by a high end DAC like the unit inside the ID44, the headphones truly perform their best. Using a high end interface like this really exposes the headphone’s full potential. Vocals are always punchy, and a tight bass is present while never being overpowering. The mids are clear and well defined, and the same goes for the highs. Their sound is quite punchy and perhaps comes off as a bit harsh upon first listening. This is partially a result of their closed back design, but also something intentional on the part of Audio Technica to make their sound more exciting. In my book, this is all a good thing and makes for an ideal listening experience with anything from lossless wav files to streaming Netflix movies. Their low impedance means they don’t need much to drive them and will work just fine with even your phone. Streaming tracks through Tidal has opened the door to practically limitless high fidelity music for me, and provided me the opportunity to test these headphones with several different genres including alternative, hip hop, classical, folk, electronic and more. They always succeed no matter the genre, and really impress me with their reproduction of the acoustic guitar and breathtaking falsetto of Justin Vernon of Bon Iver (my personal favorite artist). Some people criticize their sound for being too bass heavy and not flat enough, but in my experience with some consumer level headphones in the past the Audio

I love my m50x’s they blow Beats out of the water, Audiotechnica keeps their price point down a lot of ways, practically no advertising budget helps ( it’s not cheap to get Dr Dre in your TV commercial ) Beats are a fashion statement, a status symbol. Audiotechnica makes products for professionals. Also, if you’re super concerned about them being bass colored go with the cheaper m40s, they’re much more flat.

I’ve had the original M-50s since about 2011. The only thing I’ve had to replace were the cushions on the ear cups. Last night I accidentally broke them, they still sound amazing just one of the ear cups is loose and it doesn’t fit right. Sure, some super glue might fix them, but instead I bought a new pair. They served me well for 8 years.

Great video! I'm trying the decide between M50x and the SR50 for listening to classical and experimental noise, would you recommend these over the SR50s? I've read disparate things - that the sound signatures are the similar/way different, that the SR50 soundstage is terrible for classical, that the soundstage is perfectly suitable, etc. No option to tryNbuy during COVID. What's your take? As of now SR50=185CAD and M50XBT=250CAD. Any advice appreciated.

I checked all 3 of the cables and none of them look bent or broken. I also checked my pc and other headphones/earphones work completely fine with it. So i think it's the headphones themselves. All of the devices I have used them with does not provide them with enough power. Even my iPad and desktop motherboard. Its only when I use them with an external amp is when they get lould enough. This could be because they are over five years old, I have dropped them a couple times from my desk, I used the larger/thicker more soft cushion (so a little farther from ears), and that my hearing is bad/damaged. I wish they where noise isolating. I like my in ears from Shure because they are, but they hurt after prolonged use.

I just bought these headphones.. they sound good, they’re not as dramatically better than my Apple EarPods, I was expecting to hear something I’ve never heard before but that wasn’t the case. there’s way more treble than my EarPods though and an accurate bass but the treble is a lot. great for listening but not so flat in that department.. but mixing is great as far as moving sound nobs, and don’t let anyone else say otherwise, but the treble is so high, it makes indie music sound like heaven but im still getting used to mixing my music having to make the treble stand out way more than I would’ve on my EarPods, also the loudness is extremely accurate, nothing is all the same loudness, there is no bass boost, however the song was intended to sound is what you’re going to hear, they can get extremely loud but also really quiet compared to other headphones

A very nice review of yours, but one thing i point out in your video is the hate towards these headphones. These are actually production and mixing based headphones, which actually is not meant for everyday listeners but certainly recommended by everyone as quality for their ridiculous price bracket. this still doesnt mean that they where meant for everyday listening, people who hate them could be some passionate haters but from the professionals and sound engineers who complain about their not flat enough frequency response are actually true, these headphones does have some colour in a very accurate amount in their frequency response that might sound very good and flat enough to the untrained ear, but if you listen to some even more professional flat responding headphones that are used by big engineers, you might understand where these complains and hate is coming from. I dont hate them i personally own a pair these and absolutely loved them for their price to sound quality ratio, but after trying some other even more accurate responding headphones i certainly realized they are really good for casual listeners but not so good for audio engineers, hope you understand... :)

These headphones are so comfortable. I wore them for 4 plus hours and was reminded by the sight of the wire to take them off! Bass, midrange and treble are balanced. The soundstage is not very wide, but it is not confining. I could hear details in my favorite songs that were easy to miss with other head phones. Could the highs be tighter? Yes, just slightly. Could the bass rattle your skull a bit more? Maybe. Bottom line: if you like your music to sound balanced, these cans will be a great choice for you.

I just bought these headphones.. they sound good, they’re not as dramatically better than my Apple EarPods, I was expecting to hear something I’ve never heard before but that wasn’t the case. there’s way more treble than my EarPods though and an accurate bass but the treble is a lot. great for listening but not so flat in that department.. but mixing is great as far as moving sound nobs, and don’t let anyone else say otherwise, but the treble is so high, it makes indie music sound like heaven but im still getting used to mixing my music having to make the treble stand out way more than I would’ve on my EarPods, also the loudness is extremely accurate, nothing is all the same loudness, there is no bass boost, however the song was intended to sound is what you’re going to hear, they can get extremely loud but also really quiet compared to other headphones, I can’t say they’re the best mixing for the price but they’re definitely better than my 30 dollar EarPods for what I do lol
