The aim of haṭha yoga is to raise vital energy. Traditional texts often describe this in terms of kuṇḍalinī: a coiled serpent power that moves up the spine, dissolving the mind in awakened consciousness.
However, one of the most influential modern teachers saw it differently. T. Krishnamacharya, whose students included B.K.S. Iyengar and K. Pattabhi Jois (among many others), said kuṇḍalinī was a blockage that had to be burned, not a means to liberation.
Drawing on new research by Simon Atkinson, this conversation explores the implications for modern practitioners. Simon is the author of Krishnamacharya on Kuṇḍalinī, and has practised yoga for over 20 years in the tradition most closely associated with Krishnamacharya's son, T.K.V. Desikachar. Wow, thanks Simon for this fascinating work, I've ordered your book. I don't think you shared too much, there are many sharing a lot more, and it's helpful for your audience to know your experience. Good interview Daniel. As I mentioned, this info is in line with my research. Michaela
