  • THE DUM DUM DITTY by the Shangri Las and The Goodies/Bunnies. This is a comparison between the two groups singing the same song with same backing. Though the intro is reduced in length for the Goodies it also has the verses in "reverse" for the Shangri Las, and a few word differences in the "Bridge". There is an added verbal in the "break" for the Goodies.
    The Goodies had their name changed from the Bunnies due to contention by Haffner re his playboy bunnies.
    I do not own these tracks or the pics. This is just for comparison purposes and for fans of both groups and the song.

      Oh.... Maryann did NOT Die. She is alive and well and living in Florida. The Goodies are BACK. They are releasing their Album by end of 2019. It was one of the other ladies that passed away,.

      You must be thinking of the new Shangrilas, copycats, but still good. I knew Mary Ann Ganser in 63. Twin sister to Margie, and there was Betty, and of course, Mary Weiss, the lead singer.

      You knew Mary Ann? I would love to hear about her. What is her story? What do you know? She sand the lead on only on song - "I'm Blue" for the Shangs which is fantastic. @@WOODR52

    Got to say I love the Goodies version...and I love the bit at the end where they say ' I say yeah yeah'......but the Shangri-Las are iconic and there's just something magical about Mary Weiss's voice that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

    The Shangri Las' version for me. Love the vocal counterpoint at the end - gives me goosebumps.

    I love this song! I guess I favor the Shangs version because it just sounds so huge, but both versions are great.

    Love the Shangri Las but with this song the Goodies cover comes right out of the starting gate strong with the drum beat while the Shangri Las was kinda week with the guitar opening. It just sounded fuller and heavier with better percussion. IMO

    Doesn't matter who does the song. Nobody could screw this up. Listen to Jennifer D'Angora and the Downbeat Five. Their version is superb. Great song!!!!

    Both versions were adorable, but the first is a little better. Maybe I'm biased, but I haven't heard much about the Goodies.

    Just imagine that I heard this song for the first time yesterday. So I am a 'tabula rasa'. Difficult for me to say what version I like more. Shangri-la's lead singer has a powerful peculiar voice but Goodies are more 'group', they melt better their voices. So: I prefer Goodies.

    Great work, I like both versions but Shangs are more talented vocalists and the production values are edgier and more exciting.

    The Shangri-las sing the lyrics "Run Run Ditty", the Goodies sing the lyrics "Dum Dum Ditty". I give the edge to the Shangs....but I am biased.

    I prefer The Goodies version. Great comparison. I must point out, though, that the picture of the three girls looking through the staircase railing are not The Goodies you hear on "Dum Dum Ditty". They are the group, The Goodees, who recorded "Condition Red" in the late 60s.

    The verses by the Goodies/Bunnies are really sharp and fun. But the chorus doesn't sit in the pocket. Maybe Shadow told them to sing "ditty" off time on purpose and went back to in time for the Shangs. I dunno. The "boom boom" also sounds like he told the Goodies to phrase it a bit early. The Shangri-La's version sits in the pocket and grooves better, and I like how they pronounce it "run run dih-tee" -- smoother. The Goodies are edgier and brighter like the Crystals. The Shangs are warmer and more in the groove like... well.. the Shangs. And there is nothing like that EVERLY harmony that the Shangs re-create in girl-group mode. it's close and tight. No way I can pick a favorite in real life, Seeing the Bunnies live might have been a wild night of joy and shouting.,.. but if all we can talk about are these two specific performances of this one song on this recording... the Shangs eek out a win.

    the shangri las version is way better vocally and production and I love the ganser twins ad-libs at the end were amazing

    • @BigStar303
      @BigStar303 8 років тому +1

      You appear to be confused. There are no ad-libs at the break near the end on the Shangri-las version. They appear in the Goodies version. I would say both versions have their charms.

    • @Musicblue22
      @Musicblue22 7 років тому +2

      actually no if you listen clearly at the of the shang's version one of the ganser twins is singing oh yeah till the songs fade out that is a ad-lib

    • @BigStar303
      @BigStar303 7 років тому +2

      Well first of all, when you said "ad lib," I was assuming you meant the spoken bits that appear in the Goodies' version at the break but not in the Shangri-las' version (thus making it more likely two of the members of the Goodies were ad libbing at that point).
      Since "Oh yeah" is sung in BOTH versions by both groups at exactly the same time, it's kind of hard to figure out how this could be an "ad lib" on one version and yet not on the other.

    • @Musicblue22
      @Musicblue22 7 років тому +1

      BigStar303 i said specifically The Shangri-las version, the ad-lib is more promient on thier version towards the end of the song don't really hear it on the goodies version
