    I moved to Scotland from Japan 7 years ago to study at university.
    I spoke "ok" English at that time, then arrived in Scotland to find everyone speaking in a combination of Scots and heavily accented English
    It took me a while for my ear to attune to the Scottish way of speaking, but now 7 years on I speak just as much Scots as the locals do, I know my oxters fae ma hurdies noo haha.

    The barman is called Boaby, which apart from being short for Robert is also a Scottish slang term for the penis. Hence when they called him Dick, he corrected them to Boaby.

    Im scottish guy, I actually lived in the highrise block they filmed in, that aside dont ever attempt to watch scottish comedy with subtitles, theyre very badly translated... people from glasgow have this amazing skill, we speak english perfectly, we just choose to speak it in such a way that only we fully understand..... good choice of show to watch, if you can try to watch the specials and staage versions too

    There's are least three other American/Canadian rectors I've watched go through this series, your ear will get used to the accent and you'll pick up the lingo. All of them ended up really enjoying this series. I won't judge if it's just not your thing, but if you give it a chance I think you'll end up doing the whole run. The characters are brilliant, the humour is fantastic as is the physicality and slapstick.
    Subbing now :-)

    De ye mind = do you remember
    When he said his wee Jamie was Merritt = means hes married
    Hee-haw = nothing
    His name is bobby but we say boabby, another name for a penis, that’s why they said shut up dick.
    The best way I can describe Scottish is we talk slang, most of words with an O gets said with an A. For instance If we say were saying ‘one’ we say it like wan. It’s like we are too lazy to pronounce the letter O

    Just to echo others, there is always another bit to conclude each episode so make sure to watch until the end. The subtitles are useless for Still Game. They can't understand Scottish! You'll become more used to the accent as it goes along. You are going to LOVE this show. If you are called Bobby and live in Glasgow you are called Boabby, which also means penis, so when they said shut up Dick, that's why he replied 'for the millionth time, it's Boabby). The guy scrounging free stuff at the bar is called Tam (Tom or Thomas). He is a complete tight arse with money and tries to get out of paying for everything. If you like angry Scots, you will LOVE Winston. That's the guy who was training his grandson. He's my favorite character. Anyway, yes to you reacting to every episode. It gets SO much better too. Cheers Boabby. 😎

    The auto-generated subtitles are total garbage anyway my friend, it gets loads wrong because they aren't quite speaking English. But these guys speak very Scottish, so unless you understand the lingo, some words will pass you by.
    When the two went into the Clansman, they called the barman "Dick", but his name is "Boaby" (Scottish Bobby) and both of these words dick and boaby are slang for the same bodypart... I guess people will help with lines if you keep watching. By the end of the show you'll be able to understand many Scottish people in full natural flow!

  • @Cobalt-Jester
    @Cobalt-Jester 2 роки тому

    Thos subtitles will not help you. Turn them off. They will get most of the words wrong and it will leave you even more confused.
    The very first one you see says "Kinda". The young lad was saying "Granddad". I've seen others get even more confused by them. No fault of your own but turn them off. Your brain can do a better job of working out what's being said far better than YT. haha
