  • In this review, I'm doing a side-by-side comparison of two beers from Wicked Weed Brewing (‪@wickedweedbrewing4837‬), and it's their Pernicious and Perni-Haze. The former is an American IPA that is brewed with 10 different hop varieties, while the latter is a Hazy IPA that is brewed with Citra and Simcoe hops. We just got distribution of Wicked Weed here in NY state, so I thought it'd be fun to do a bit of a showcase review with two of their IPAs. Which one do I prefer? Let's find out!
    Commercial Description:
(Pernicious) - Pernicious implies influence that is harmful in a way not easily noticed. This beer is harmful, not because of overwhelming hop bitterness, but because its balanced brightness insidiously ruins your expectations for all other IPAs. This hop delivery vehicle is crafted to enjoy fresh and often and because of its drinkability and clean finish you'll never look at IPAs the same again. The harm is done.
(Perni-Haze) - This hazy hop delivery vehicle is to be enjoyed fresh and often. Citra and Simcoe from our favorite hop fields drive this juicy IPA. With its crush-ability and effortless finish, you'll never look at a hazy IPA the same.
    Pertinent Information:
Brewery - Wicked Weed Brewing (Asheville, NC)
    Beer - Pernicious & Perni-Haze
Style - American IPA & Hazy IPA
    ABV - 7.3% & 6.9%
    IBU - 70 & 40
Canned On Date - 04/03/24 & 04/23/24 (Just under two months old & Just over five weeks old at the time of review)

AB Inbev has begun brewing Wicked Weed out of their location in Portsmouth NH in order to expand northward. They recently invested 5 million in the location. It just showed up here too. I got a 6 pack of each. I look forward to trying them.

Thanks for the information! That makes total sense since they seem to be showing up a bit more in the Northeast. Pretty damn good if my cans came from the Portsmouth location, honestly. Curious to see what you think of both beers when you do drink 'em.
      Cheers!

Thanks, man! I love the t-shirt, and I don't think it shows up on camera that well, but Flair is wearing a Wu-Tang chain, so it's more like Wooooooo-Tang, haha!

I didn't love the Pernicious IPA but I was very impressed with the Perni-Haze. It seemed to have much more flavor to me.

Nice! I definitely enjoyed the Perni-Haze more, but only by a small margin. I enjoyed trying both of them, but I'd probably go back to the Perni-Haze before Pernicious.
      Cheers!

Pernicious is a nice easy drinking west coaster. Didnt get too excited with the Perni-haze, but at $10.49 a 6 pack for both, i would buy them again. Freak of Nature DIPA 8.5 was pretty great, and at $2.49 for a 19.2 oz can. Watched a video saying that, Freak of Nature was the first beer that they made, influenced by Pliny. They worked real hard on that one, and all the others, they just threw together. And its cool, how they put the born on date, and the exp date on the cans....Cheers!!!

I haven't seen Freak of Nature, but I'm going to totally grab it if it shows up here. That's cool about FoN. Didn't know that. Hopefully, it's pretty damn good. I also love the fact they put the canned on date along with the best by date. More breweries need to follow suit, SONS!
      Cheers, man!

No worries, brother. BTW, great box of goodies you sent Kyle's way. Looking forward to all the reviews from him.

I used to drink them before they sold out and was pretty decent. But I am a "fuck inbev" guy so no more.

Fair enough. I totally get it. Both of these were pretty good for essentially shelfie beers at this point. Wish I could've tried Pernicious pre-AB InBev, but it is what it is.
      Cheers, dude!

Good review man. I’ve heard for a while that this is a solid West Coast IPA. I didn’t get a chance to try Pernicious or any Wicked Weed stuff when we were in Asheville a few years ago. They’ve also got the Funkatorium, which is the Wicked Weed owners’ side project for mixed fermentation stuff (supposed to be really good) and they’ve got Pernicious on there it looks like. We’re there next month and I’ll give it a try. I’d like to say I won’t support AB Inbev, but whatever. I’m not buying their products often at all. Plus that would mean no Bourbon County stuff, and that’s not gonna work for me. Lol

I think if it was a little fresher, it would've had more of a WCIPA vibe, but it really just reminded me of a good old school East Coast IPA. Regardless, for the price point and availability, it's pretty good. I had some beers from their Funkatorium, and they were really good, for sure. I'll be curious to see what you think.
As far as supporting AB InBev, to each their own. I know some folks who do, and some folks who don't. I get it. Hell, I don't really review Founders stuff for their indiscretions over the past several years. I get more frustrated when people say "I'm not supporting AB InBev"," and they talk all this stuff about them, and then on Black Friday, they buy every single BCBS release under the son and make excuses about doing so.
      Cheers, Curtis!

@@averagejoe716 Hahaha. That sounds about right on Bourbon County. Everyone’s got their principles until they really want something. I think the majority of us craft drinkers are giving the vast majority our money to independent breweries so if every now and then I buy some beer owned by In Bev I’m not losing sleep over it.
That makes sense that if Pernicious lost some freshness it might come off like an old school East Coast IPA. Still definitely curios to try it and the Funkatorium in general.

Yeah, it's just like most things in life. I love supporting local businesses, especially when it comes to food and drink, but sometimes you hit up a McDonald's or Wendy's or whatever, and I don't think twice about it. Like I said, everybody has their own principles and beliefs, more power to 'em, but just keep it consistent.
Yeah, I think if it was more in that 4-6 week range, I think the WCIPA characteristics would've been a bit more prominent. Still a good one, though. Looking forward to your thoughts in Wicked Weed, in general.

@@averagejoe716 For sure. I’m sure they definitely partake in some underhanded business practices but it’s hard to just swear them off entirely in every circumstance. I personally don’t like Amazon because I think they’ve started monopolizing where people buy things, but sometimes I really need something and I know I can get it there.
I don’t know if we’ll actually go to Wicked Weed because there are so many good breweries and even in a week you can only have so much. I think we’ll definitely try the Funkatorium though since everyone says it’s awesome, plus they’ve got regular Wicked Weed stuff in there. I think it’s likely we hit up Burial at both locations, Sierra Nevada and a bunch of other really good spots we went to 2 years ago.
