I actually own 3 Volvo XC90's from throughout that first generation, one from the early years (2003-2006), one from the mid years (2007-2012), and one from the final years (2013-2014). Also, one is the v8 and 2 are the 3.2 i6. Reliability is hit or miss, the cars for the most part wont leave you stranded, unlike some brands (hmm Jaguar), but the XC90's consistently rattle and make weird noises. Lights go on and off on the dash all the time. They all ride smooth, but the 2013-2014 final version of the gen 1 XC90 (I have a 2014) is far quieter and smoother than the other 2. Volvo finally figured out how to tune the 6 speed transmission with the 2013 refresh, as well as made the car ride smoother and quieter. Overall, we have to view these cars for what they are, not as prestigious as a Mercedes or Porsche, not as reliable as a Toyota or Honda, but way safer than any other brand. That's why Volvo people keep buying them. I never regret purchasing our three, because knowing you're in the safest production car is a feeling like no other. Obviously no car is injury or fatality proof, but these XC90's are the best on the market. Hope this helps clarify things for anyone looking to justify purchasing an XC90.

We have one. Love it. I think you hit some key points, but also missed some of the most attractive things about this car, and it probably has more to do with where you are coming from and your perspective than anything.
You are spot on about the driving feel, the heavy feel, how it gets better when you get moving (vs. parking lot), the wear on the leather (not as good as the Germans or Japanes IMO), the creaky plastics, and more. Also, you hit the nail on the head that the 3.2 is the best engine (used buyers will want to know also that the 3.2 has a timing chain, not belt).
A few really attractive things that you missed or skipped over:
    1) The third row. It is super easy to open and close, no lost head rests as they're attached, and it's easy to get in and out of for SUVs of this class. Third row is tight but usable for healthy, average sized adults, but best for kids -- and that's who/what it is needed for.
    2) The safety cell of the body structure includes the third row (protects the occupants), and the luggage area behind it is a crumple zone -- not true of a lot of SUVs and other vehicles with third rows.
    3) Middle row has more leg room than that -- I don't think you had the seats back all the way. I'm 6'3" and fit fine, as good as any SUV.
    4) Rear portion of center console is removable to give more leg room for second row center passenger, or if it a child, move him/her closer.
    5) The second row center seat has a built in booster seat - extremely handy. Remember, these vehicles were aimed at families -- and they are a home run in that regard.
    6) The split rear tailgate is great for keeping things from falling out when you open the hatch, and for sitting on the tail gate. There is also a flip-up "wall" at the rear of the luggage area to hold your groceries from sliding forward/all over the place. The car you tested had all of these great features (including the third row) covered up with those rubber cargo mats.
    7) The styling - when new, while taut and athletic, it was more functional than anything else; by the same hand, it aged gracefully. A lot better than the Japanese SUVs that just look plain old when they get old. Purposeful styling always looks good.
    8) RUST RESISTANCE -- this is huge. These are some of the most rust resistant cars ever built, period. Not really relevant where you are in the Carolinas, but in New England, Great Lakes, Midwest, and other parts of the "rust belt", these Volvos still look great and will look great for years and years. Ours has seen thirteen Massachusetts winters, and the underbody and suspension are cleaner than a three-year-old Japanese or American SUV.
    9) Not only is the steel well protected by galvanization and coatings, but the plastic cladding along the lower body is very thorough and protective -- not just a cheap cover up -- to help protect against rust (from road rash + salt spray). In conjunction with that, the curves of the body are carefully designed so that the painted steel parts of the lower body are shielded from road rash; these things hide their miles well because the paint doesn't take a beating. Smartly designed, like a lot of Mercedes used to be decades ago.
    10) It is worth mentioning that this first generation XC90 continued to earn the rating of "Top Safety Pick" by the IIHS even ten years into production, faring better than many new vehicles. Of special note is that this vehicle's design predates the small overlap frontal crash test, yet the (then) ten year old design earned a high rating, above its competitors.
    11) You were right that the 3.2 is the best engine choice; the transmission that is coupled to it deserves a mention here, too. It is built by Aisin, a Japanese company in the Toyota family, and was/is used in a variety of vehicles and has the reputation for longevity that one would expect from a company with ties to Toyota.
It seemed you were reviewing the vehicle from the standpoint of someone who is into new luxury vehicles, and who is into vehicles more for personal use. When coming from the perspective of someone looking for a vehicle for their family, this Volvo is just incredible. It's combination of safety and practicality/versatility is just unbeatable. All that for only $7000! And while it may not be flashy, its styling is "steadfast," and that is something that some people are seeking in a family vehicle, or in the stage of life they are in -- again, a win. And it's a Volvo -- Volvos have a decades-long reputation of being vehicles that smart people keep for a long time, for hundreds of thousands of miles; unlike some makes, having an old Volvo is not a bad thing for most people's image. For a used vehicle for a family, it's an all around winner. I don't know of a better value, or a safer vehicle at even double the price point.
Great review, I enjoyed it very much, and thanks for reading my comment!

We have owned a couple. Expensive to maintain after 120K...well-fitting parts are costly. By 150-175K it really needs engine mounts, a full suspension refresh, axles, angle gear service, front driveshaft, struts, etc etc. Probably looking at 3K+. V8's will need valve cover and/or timing cover seal service for another 2-3K. Sensors become expensive to replace. If you can set aside 2-3K a year in maintenance it's a great car to own outright...very comfortable, very safe and the engines LAST.

Great for wintertime. Swedish cars don't care about cold. Mine always starts. I live in Iowa. Winter is no laughing matter. Beware the radio dying. Very complicated affair. I use a small blue tooth speaker and "rock out" to NPR. Great 17 year old car with 150k+ miles. Comfy, nice ride for lousy road conditions. Tough. got rear ended at a stop light. I got a dent in the bumper the size of a stick match, the other person lost miserably and ended up a pile of plastic and glass ( late model Impala).

The V8 is also the most efficient of all the V8s in its SUV class, while also being powerful, 315hp, 440nm gets this 2.1 ton suv to 60mph in 7.3 sec!

Great review Kevin . I had 3 Volvo’s over past 15 years .. my first was a 1990 240 Wagon which ultimately had too many electrical problems. Next was a 1994 850 Turbo wagon (5 cylinder) ... this one also had an electrical problem, if i hit a major bump or expansion joint at high speed the car would lose power ! 2 times that happened to me, one was in a snow storm and the other was on the NJ turnpike doing about 65-70 mph ! That was the scariest shit ever. Had to pull over into the shoulder. My last was a 2006 S60R 6 speed manual 300 hp, bought it in 2008 with nearly 30k miles. That car was amazing.... too heavy with 4WD but a blast to drive...

Fixed tow new wheel pulleys some part for top of engine that makes the dipstick whistle when broken and brakes rotors. Want to get newer one or I ll have to get new tires.
Got a 2007 three yrs ago excellent shape inside outside lots of small s tables some dents very small can’t see any of those when more then couple ft away. Low miles 95k for a 07 in 20 at 13.5 yrs from new. Must have been a big city driver area. Suspension is good wonder if it’s better if it wasn’t a city driver and a all around driver.
