This is brilliant. So fundamental and yet such a mystery for folks. Excellent tutorial. Thanks for doing this.
Thanks for watching! Glad it's helpful.
I really needed this video Shane ! Thank you. 😊
Blues On....💙
Agree. I hate tweaking pedals live. I try to set once and just turn them on and off only. One sound for the whole night.
I also recently stopped “wanking off” (a musical term;) to the sounds of other musicians. I’ve almost found my sound with the equipment I have, all I have to do is level the volume on my amplifier and main overdrive pedal and everything will be great! ;)
All the more reason to move to Midi.
Preset multiple sounds and just enjoy.
Pedals with presets definitely help. I've got a flanger (Earthquaker Devices Pyramids) that has 5 presets so I use it to cover flange, chorus, phase, and lead boost. I have the EQD Palisades as a drive pedal and it has two channels so it covers light and heavy OD, plus a gain boost to drive the amp. Use the bandwidth dial to go from OD to fuzz. That plus a reverb/tap tempo delay (EQD Avalanche Run) is all I need for every tone imaginable
Great idea for a video, Shane! Great tones, too! The Peavey is awesome! Noticed a mad buzz from your G or B string at 2:30. Had a bit of a sitar vibe🤘
haha great ear. I adjusted the height of the saddles slightly after the video 🙂
@@intheblues sweet! I had a similar issue on my Samick Valley Arts Strat(Floyd style trem), where the low E all of a sudden, started buzzing like crazy. Removed the string from the saddle, put it back in and it was fine🤷🏻♂️😀
For those of you who are inexperienced, if you can, turn it at wherever you can and play along to backing track just as loud. EQ your amp accordingly. You’ll be surprised at what cuts through and sounds good when competing with the rest of a band as compared to playing at home by yourself. Be prepared to cut highs and lows and boost mids. The higher the volume, the less gain you need. That’ll help with clarity. Also, if you turn down gain you’ll lose some bass so you may have to boost the low end slightly. If you use effects, your effects will get washed out a little so you’ll need to boost those higher than you normally would at home.
I've always believed one of the best things anyone can do for practice at home is to jam along with albums... It not only teaches you how to tweak your tone to sit in a mix, but also, more importantly, you learn how to play with a band. When to let loose and when to be more restrained.
Eventually you get to the point where you aren't even copying the lead guitar part anymore, but it's like you're an additional band member adding a guitar part that compliments or bounces off the lead part.
Great video! Thanks for this one- valuable for beginners & veterans alike.
Nice work Shane!
Great tips, cheers! 👍
Thanks, Bill! I hope you're doing well mate.
Absolutely fantastic have a wonderful weekend Shane ❤😊
Great info on effects set up!
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Great video! I’ve been on a kick the last couple of months trying to really learn the minimal gear I have since downsizing my collection massively. It’s been a lot of fun exploring, and videos like these are always great references!
guitar set up including string height for good tone as well. great video. awesome sounding peavey
Great video Shane... I was waiting for the small board reveal at the end...
I just stuck to the big board in the end, it was more versatile.
Thanks Shane, another great video. I have a Strymon Sunset and can get the A side at unity volume, or the B side at unity volume, but when I use both for Max dirt the volume goes through the roof. I think I need to settle for A or A+B only, similar to your setup with the 2 pedals.
Great video sharing your secrets to great live tones. Do you also make adjustments to your pedals and amp when you are with the band doing the sound check or does your adjustments usually work in most situations? Thanks in advance!!🎸🎸👍🏾😎🎂
I sometimes make slight tweaks, but we didn't do a proper sound check with the gig. We just got up and played, but by the end of the first song, it's usually dialed in pretty much fine for everyone. I usually volume or slight tone adjustments (but it's usually pretty close depending on the room and guitar I take).
This is great Shane - some useful tips to start out on. I guess you repeat same process for humbucker/higher output guitar? it will mean two different settings? I like the moderate level mix on the delay and max 3 repeats - sounds good on the lead guitar settings. Like all the pictures in the background.
Thanks man. I always start with the guitar I want to use - one you dial it in, if you switch guitars you shouldn't have to make any major changes - just possibly either a small tweak on the amps bass or treble or the pedals tone control.
My buddy has the Katana mini. Over the Holidays, he took it to a dinner party- for some Christmas songs and some simple pop songs. He would be the only guitar there so he dialed in at his place before he left. He couldn't find it in that 12 x 14 room. It kind of ruined the night for him.
Shout-out from Florida ✝️👍🤙✌️
Thanks Damian! Rock on mate🎸
@@intheblues Whoop! Whoop! ✝️👍🤙✌️
👍🏻👍🏻
Hi Shane, nice video, looking cold there. Have they run out of gas already in Vic😅
I moved the studio around and I think the colour temperature of the camera is giving you that vibe. it should be fixed on the next video.
@intheblues Shane I was referring to the outdoors jacked you're wearing and thought to make a joke about the Vic gov running out of gas 🤣
Good info Shane ...??..would you take the same steps using a solid state amp like the bandit .an is there any difference in your process...
It's the same thing no matter which am I am using :-)
Albert King approved blues tones!!!
This is how I go about dialing in my tone or setting up an amp with my effects pedals. I have a follow up video coming up soon showcasing how this worked out at the gig. Stay tuned. My gear list in this video is below. 😎

Thanks Shane. After setting the amp knobs to noon, do you adjust the guitar knobs, or just fine-tune the amp knobs?
Leave the tone controls all the way open so it's not affecting the sound of your guitar. The tone controls are basically redundant if you dial your amp in the way you like it to begin with. :)

@@intheblues Thanks, this is helpful. I've been flip flopping between the guitar and amp and confusing myself. 👍
Is the royal flush 2 tube screamers or 2 blues breakers.
Neither. It's sort of it's own thing but its closer to a blues driver than it is a tube screamer
@@intheblues I have found they are either both or twins.
I think that we could easily make better circuits. Thanks for the video. I really appreciate a Australian version. ❤️
And the drunk punters have never heard of a guitar pedal and don't care about tone. When people ask what I do and I say I build guitar pedals they say - what? 😂
