Hunting community concerned over Bill C-21 banning certain rifles

- The federal government introduced a bill earlier this fall to ban handguns to address gun violence in Canada, however recent amendments also ban commonly used long guns. Mark Ryckman with the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters says some of the 'reasonable firearms' should not be prohibited.

Then politicians have to go after themselves
Go after anyone who owns an assault rifle. Not need in 2022 and beyond. Just more redneck whining and crying.
If the government was concerned about gun violence they wouldn't of scrapped mandatory minimum sentencing for gun crime.
They should increase them and remove bail ! Hunters and sport shooters are of no danger to anyone. Smuggled handguns used by gangs and organized crime groups are the problem and no ban will have an affect on that.
Of course they're not. Criminal never go out to get licensed and buy their guns legally anyways. They will keep buying them from black market and this will not impact them at all. Politicians are so dumb.
thats the confoundedness of liberalism. cater to CRIMINALS and light sentences etc.

my guy you should change your profile name XD Nobody can never take these issues seriously if they are tainted by fascist fanboys
If they wanted to legitimately deter gun crime make it a mandatory 10 year sentence if a crime is committed with a firearm.
No law will prevent criminals from obtaining guns.
Depending on the law, it can prevent some criminals from obtaining guns, and it can make other criminals choose not to use them. But it will not prevent every criminal from obtaining a gun and using it.
@@istvanglock7445 we already have strict laws prohibiting criminals from purchasing, transporting or operating firearms, this has zero impact on crime.
@@longdong3889
We don't have any such laws. It will be difficult for a criminal convicted of using a firearm in the pursuance of crime, or convicted of any form of violence, to obtain a PAL. Other convicted criminals not so much, depending on the crime they were convicted of.
My point was that the banning of a certain type of gun can make that gun scarcer and more expensive on the illegal market and more difficult to obtain. Casual criminals may not have the contacts to obtain illegal weapons. Career criminals might though. Greatly increasing the penalty for a particular crime when a gun is involved as opposed to when a gun is not involved can make some criminals think twice about using a gun. This has been shown to work in some countries, the UK for example.
@@istvanglock7445 I agree with a lot of your points. Crimes involving guns should have very severe punishments.
YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND....THESE LAWS ARE NOT MEANT TO SLOW DOWN CRIME.....THEY ARE MEANT TO MAKE SLAVES OF YOU........SLAVES HAVE NEVER BEEN ALLOWED TO BE WELL ARMED
I feel like I'm missing something here. Any gun ban whether rifle, shotgun or handgun would only affect licensed individuals. But criminals smuggle their guns in across from the US. So how does a gun ban affect them? The liberals etc want to reduce gun violence which is great, but how is that achieved with a ban? It only affects those that are not criminals while at the same time making the liberals look good to ill-informed Canadians.
It doesn't affect criminals at all. It's entirely done as window dressing to make it look like they're tough on gun violence. Of course they aren't doing anything about ACTUAL gun violence. It's just that legal gun owners are a really easy target, so it takes no actual thought or effort to go after them.
Get ready for the streets to be absolutely flooded with weapons if the ban takes effect. When criminals have unfettered access to the most armed country on the planet (The United States) and 9,000 kilometers of open border to travel across, AND they know not a single Canadian can legally defend themselves from even a rabid coyote? Violence will go through the roof and they'll try and ban kitchen knives next.
Your 1000% right. Did you hear about the gun bust in Toronto last week? Because it got very little media attention. Because it doesn't go with the liberal narrative. Something like 60 handguns and 4 rifles. The police said 1 was from a B&E in Canada, 4 were untraceable and all the rest were smuggles in from the states. The conservatives put forth an idea to get scanners for our ports because we only scan 1% of shipping containers. The liberals acted like it was a bad idea. It is 100% about control and nothing to do with public safety. 2
1000 Drug overdoses this year and they scan 1% of the containers that drugs and guns come intonthr country in.

These poorly written bills passed with no debate have no place in our country. The wording bans many lever action guns that are mainly used by hunters and cowboy sports. They hold more then 5 rounds in the tube fed magazine usually 6 or 7. The magazine take a he'll of a long time to load and are not detachable they are built into the rifle. The way that some are loaded cannot be altered to hold less rounds. Some of these rifles are called guide guns like the 1895 chambered in 45-70(1895 is the year it was made). Some of these rifles are a 30-30 lever action that is not only A hunting rifle but is regarded by professionals and heavily debated as THE best all round hunting rifle. Many many 22lr rifles that are bolt or lever action all excellent small game rifles will be banned. Many shotguns for duck and deer banned. The sks is used by many hunters as an affordable rifle. It's magazine holds 10 rounds but in canada has been WELDED with steel to hold 5 and it is not detachable. With some gunsmithing After marked magazines can be illegaly modified for the sks to allow it to hold more then 5. Ban those magazines.. Since the sks, in its legal form, meets the the criteria of not being banned they banned it by name in their ammendment. Any rifle or weapon can be used in a crime. Bill C-21 needs to be rescinded in its entirety. Banning guns never works and none should ever be banned...none. They should all though, be regulated through licensing of the owners, and the classification of firearms, based on function, clearly defined such that anyone can determine easily what class any firearm falls into by simply examining it. No firearm should be banned, but it may be the case that to own one legally would require a very high standard. The argument that a firearm was designed for war is simply a terrible argument. It should not be a criteria at all.
The problem is that these Liberals will never stop...ever. They will keep on banning more and more until there is nothing left. There is no compromise to an unreasonable ban.

Focusing on the hunters is kind of a double edged sword, you will likely be able to preserve access to the most basic bolt, lever and pump actions, but anything more advanced can be easily banned because its "not reasonable for hunting". so sport shooters lose their lawfully acquired and owned guns despite following all the rules.
Here they are going after stereotypical shotgun - like kids would draw, double barrel. Cannot get more basic than that in hunting. This is why this is seen as unexplainable move. I mean its not even pump action, not even bolt -- its more basic. Also from 1800s.
@@mateoromeo7032 In short order they will remove even more rifles - after all who needs to hunt - you can just go to the store and buy meat, right? There is no "human right" to plinking or target shooting. So one can simply ban all non rim fire rifles. Then in few years even rim fire.
As to people up north that need a rifle to protect vs. polar bear or something - they are so niche that I guess they simply will have to go back to what pp did before firearms.
Wait till there is a law about assault bows. And too dangerous arrows or something.
Its like banning cars - there is no need for them, when you think about it - people were fine before cars were a thing. So yeah, when you think about it almost everything can be said to be "non essential".
The problem with semis and hunting or plinking is that the argument they are "not needed" is not the same as "not of much use". For full auto the main use is showing off and spray and pray + trench/ room clearing. There is not much use case in hunting - no one every hunted on full auto. However, semi auto use is quite widespread and is of utility. Even in military almost all fire is semi auto.
Incidentally this is why the name of "assault" rifle is derived from - they were used to "assault" enemy position - see note about trench clearing (or room clearing etc.). Clearly there is little utility in civilian world - not at all the same for semi auto.

Explain to me why countries with tight gun control have little gun crime? I realize that lowering gun crime is not just about restricting guns and their use, but cultural issues play a big role too. The US is very much a special case, and has painted itself into a corner.
You need to think about the statement " _There is no criminal who abides by the law_ " because it's not true. Most criminals abide by the law most of the time. And no, criminals don't always get the guns. In countries where guns are under strict control, illegal guns can be hard to find, and expensive. I don't know what the case is in Canada, but in some countries, UK for example, the sentencing for a particular crime can be vastly different depending on whether a gun is used - criminals know this and, combined with the difficulty of finding a gun, mostly choose not to use them.
The fact is that some people in Canada are in a low income bracket and they hunt for food. Imagine you have a gun that you have used to hunt with for 50 years and now the government want to confiscate it with no reimbursement. Some people can’t afford to just buy another gun

Lever action, bolt action, and even single shot rifles were once used as weapons of war. In fact, the SKS was in service at the same time as the Lee Enfield bolt action. The SKS ban makes no sense and I am not an owner of an SKS, as it isn't powerful enough to hunt big game in my part of Canada. It doesn't have a detachable magazine and thus cannot be reloaded very quickly. Another fact, the Lee Enfield has detachable magazine of the same quantity of rounds as an SKS, but the Lee Enfield is significantly more powerful. Over longer periods of time, it is one of the few examples where a bolt action could out compete a semi-automatic rifle because of the ability to quickly change empty mags for full ones.
Long story short, the liberals have a bias against firearms which is why they say and do things that make no sense to anyone who knows anything about firearms. This looks good to those that know nothing about, and already hate, firearms
The Nova Scotia shooter illegally smuggled guns from the US and the police knew about it and did nothing for a decade. The CBC did a story not too long ago about CBSA agents having dinner with organized criminals. This law does nothing about this.
Ultimately, the Liberals are implying that by the virtue of owning a firearm that "looks" a certain way (or is semi-automatic), the owner of those guns is at risk of becoming a mass shooter. The implication is detestable and shows the total lack of a moral compass on behalf of the extremists in office. I, for one, am not a mass murderer, and I never will be. This is purely political- it's not about safety at all. It's about control and ensuring that no matter what they do or try, no possible armed resistance (which is laughable and never going to happen, already) could ever meet them. The question is then begged- what exactly are they planning on doing that makes them so paranoid about law-abiding citizens peacefully owning firearms?

Firearms are actually quite easy to fabricate from the ground up for anyone who took machine shop in high school. This government is dangerously flirting with creating a whole new underground gun manufacturing industry.
Just another example of how the liberal government's gun laws create new criminals instead of exposing existing ones.
Best of luck to them in enforcing it on the Reserve.
Anywhere for that matter.
Ahhh the chosen one has spoken lmao. Funny how none of the illegally smuggled guns from reserves are intercepted and no one brought to jail lol.
Since Wildlife conservation officers will need a fully loaded AR10 to protect themselves from dangerous animals, and some Yahoo pops out of no-where saying hunters should only need one shot.

Well, taking into consideration how the Canadian, UK, Scottish, USA, Australian, etc,. governments treats their citizens I think All firearms should legalized and everyone should own one and be trained to use them, everyone should be able to defend themselves from the authoritarian governments of the world and against the individual peoples that would do them harm.
In smart countries like Canada you have what they call " elections " If you disagree with the system you vote them out . No need for firearm with 30 bullets magazine !! See what happen in the states ??
I am tired of people who know f all about guns making these decisions. Unbelievable! What has happened to Canada? This will not decrease the problem. Our gun laws are already strict enough. They are not addressing a problem. If someone wants a gun, to do harm … they will find a gun.

There are 2 big problems here. The gun ban and how they went about it.
There ARE communities out there that thrive on hunters and hunting for businesses AND tourism,
And those communities are essentially being told to go dry up and become a ghost town.
Plenty of lodges out near the bush,
Who will no longer have seasonal customers coming to stay for example.
This hurts communities with strong ties to sporting of various kinds
This guy is a poor advocate, "military style" or "assault style"....we're allowed neither! We have firearms for shooting, plinking, hunting, and varmit control. I think much like many states we should allow the castle doctrine to be allowed to protect our family, home, and property. Canadians are very poorly equipped to deal with violent crime. In rural settings even less equipped!
Its not just a matter of replacing a gun with another one that is not on the list. Some of these are family heirlooms that have a lot of sentimental value, and should be passed along to the next generation. They are not just a piece of metal and wood that can be replaced.
Additionally - Some people, including those who hunt to feed themselves or their family, may not be able to afford or have access to a replacement firearm.
Taking legal guns from the woods, grasslands, wetlands, shooting clubs and collectors safes that are legally owned by licensed, vetted citizens does not have any impact on removing illegal guns from criminal hands in urban areas. To say otherwise is complete folly.
It seems crazy to ban effectively toy guns like Airsoft rifles. I don't see how that increases public safety.
But some of them look scary. We can't have that.
Where I live the little Indian gangs use pellet guns and airsoft to rob and intimidate. We need tougher laws and judges who enforce laws instead of putting blame on colonialism

It's harder for a nation to stand against a tyrannical government if the people are disarmed.
The first gun Mark mentions is the SKS, the most egregious example of overreach by this amendment. There are ovewr 1 million SKS rifles in Canada used by sport shooters and indigenous hunters alike. It is declared the Soviet's gift to Canada, because it is so ubiquitous. Banning the SKS would be a disaster.
I am not av voting a age yet, but the people that I have talked to 90% of them being a liberal see that this is a completely political move and does not help gun violence at all. All the people that normally would like the liberals are being pushed to the conservative side.
A firearm is an inanimate object like a knife, baseball bat, white van etc. the problem is the criminals and gangs. Deal with the problem not taking firearms from responsible legal firearm owners.
I completely support defunding the CBC. However, this is a rare fair and balanced interview.
2 years ago when they banned the first round of guns the CBC had an " expert" witness who was a criminal Pshyc professor at SFU. It was an absolute joke. He said an AR15 would turn a deer to pink mists. And mislead the listeners to believe in Canada people are carrying guns in public like in the states.
Yes because the gangs and criminals in big cities use licensed hunting rifles that are family heirlooms.

Is every media stooge just a complete muppet? If the govt banned cars, you could ride a bike to work. The question is why does the govt think it has the right to ban personal property. If its about saving 'even one life', then how about some focus on illegal drugs, automotive safety and mental health?
Banding the sale of handguns will mean that soon Canada will not have an Olympic gun team/club.
We know who the criminals are.
I am Canadian and I am against Bill C-21
The US arms industry flooding the illegal market is the problem. Not people who are buying guys with pals.
The SKS is a fine hunting rifle. I don't believe there is an epidemic of gun violence in Canada related to legally purchased SKS rifles by the Canadian hunting community. This spokeperson sounds like he is almost willing to help the Liberals decide which guns should be banned. Very weak. I would rather someone who is willing to call this gun ban what it is. A deliberate attack on legal gun ownership by a government that does not have ordinary Canadian's best interests at heart.
I've been a liberal supporter my whole life but the last few years have been testing me.
I hunt every year and own a single shot rifle (ruger number 1) why are they banning a rifle that can only fire one shot??? I inherited this gun like 35 years ago..... Its just a VERY basic hunting rifle....... Why ban and take my grandfathers single shot hunting rifle??? What are these people doing and thinking???
They won't take it you will see. Because of Carey Price and indigious people freaking out on guns banned there's no way they will keep those on the list. Funny how one hockey star says the same thing the conservatives and gun owners were saying for the longest time and his comment made the liberals want to rethink this bill. Pretty sad how one person's opi ion counts more then millions.
😂 karma for voting liberal. It’s not about gun control, it’s culture control.
It’s about disarming Canadians. The next step will be to remove all firearms, believe me. The first move is to stop supporting the liberal ideologies that are absolutely insane
Don't worry, it's all a conspiracy theory. Just keep voting liberal and believe whatever you see on your TV.
If you’re just seeing this malfeasance in the past few years, than you’re completely hopeless?
Owning fire arms of all calibers and capacities should be a fundamental human right!
Look up Ruger No.1. It is literally a single shot falling block rifle and would be prohibited. There is NO magazine, you have to hand load one cartridge after each shot.
spend your money to control black guns. not legal guns!!
The fact this guy who is supposedly part of Ontario fishing and hunting actually called the guns on the lost a "weapon of war" is a joke! Just another puppet
The ban on semis is further misguided as it presumes the privilege of only fully able-bodied people being worthy of hunting, or protecting themselves against hazards. If a person doesn’t have fine motor skills due to age, injury, or disability, a magazine-fed semi-auto is a benefit to their ability to hunt in that they may need to take follow up shots due to missing, or less than ideal shot placement, or the bullet being interfered with by a brush or a twig.
We need to judge the merits of the legislation on their own. Ie: does the wholesale banning of something actually EFFICIENTLY and EFFECTIVELY accomplish what it sets out to without needlessly capturing people who are not related to the problem needing to be solved. Or are we throwing out the baby with the bath water?
The logic of banning semis from people who get regular daily ongoing background checks in an attempt to prevent gun crime in Canada, when gun crime is predominantly gang-related, and moreover using smuggled prohibited handguns from the US, is the same as:
- We should ban X models of trucks because they are more likely to be used by drunk drivers.
- We should ban vans because they are used in kidnappings.
- We should card people of colour because they statistically commit more crimes.
- We should ban red cars because they get pulled over more often.
Not exactly arguments worthy of having.
And we should have these discussions in public, and not behind closed doors after the consultation period is over at the 11th hour.
If they would take all that energy and use it to counter criminality acquired firearms it would make this country way safer than attacking the legally abiding citizens.
WOW both sides so polite you never see that in my country anymore
You only see that on the government-owned news. Trust me, we aren't that polite these days...
Or you could, yknow, make stronger laws on illegal weapons.
Conservatives did, and Junior scrapped it because of “muh racism”.
