    I’ve been using chlorinated, fluoride-laced tap water for years with no ill effects. My marine toad is the only animal that I take care to let the water sit in a pitcher overnight. I use homemade substrate collected from outside too. It amazes me how many people seem to think their critters live in sterile environments in the wild.

    What a massive giant!! He didn´t even need to stretch a lot to get his feet over the top, if he´d have a sudden change of mind and decided to make a run for freedom, better not cross the way of that T-Train. Impressive animal, impressive Dave and Camera Lady gets the award for the most coldblooded filming, not even a little bit cam shaking when the beast jumped out, like I probably mentioned before, bloody impressive.

    Every time I see one of these giants, it takes me back to that fateful summer of 1993. Our Botanical Garden was opening and they had an exhibition from the Montreal Insectarium... and amongst their live displays was the fabled Theraphosa blondi. Me being a curious teenager at the time, it was fascination at first sight. I literally spent the ENTIRE summer just gawking at it from every possible angle.
    Now it could have been a stirmi or an apophysis. It was HUGE !
    16 years later, I buy a G. rosea/porteri from my LPS after having read up on them for 6 months. Even then, nothing would prepare me for how powerful an impact that first spider was going to have on me. Hooked for life as you can imagine.
    Thanks for the memories, Dave ! :D Best of luck on breeding this most mythical beast.
    Stay safe and thanks for sharing :)

    Also as regards to water that is a great idea to leave it in the room for a day so it acclimatises to the rooms temperature.
    Years back when I had a large fish tank and it was due for a water change and filter clean, we would have about 3 large fermenting buckets full of water and it would sit there for about 2 days, so the chlorine could be released. Not sure how effective it was but that was something that my Mum got me to do when I had fish. Also lovely Spider and lucky You didn’t catch any of those hairs!

    Water in the parts of the US has a lot of chlorine in it, which can kill your reptiles/fish/amphibians. Therefore, I wouldn't recommend using your water, unless you've tested it thoroughly and established that it is safe for your smaller animals. I only use distilled water because of it. (I'm from the Netherlands originally, where I would agree, but here in the US (Texas), I wouldn't recommend just grabbing untreated tap water)

If he is this big...what must the female look like? Life span? Since the males are expendable...and why the hair flinging? I understand defense..but,do they just run out of body hairs to fling? Love your channel...you are so educational...no panic,plenty of insight and lots of interesting factoids.....Kudos!!

      @SinkEmQuicker 3 роки тому +2

      In answer to your questions:
      They tend to lay a web over the ground, like a blanket to protect them, so it won’t be able to drown.
      Females get a bit bigger, to around 24cm I think, and they can live up to 25-30 years in captivity.
      They still need to defend themselves to go and mate, they have millions of little hairs on their abdomen, the whole rear section is covered in hairs that they can kick. These hairs grow back after a little while.
      They really are an incredible species and Dave is incredible at explaining things

    What a lovely spider, I’ve got to say, I’m really impressed with your channel pal. You’re brilliant with the spiders. Do you have a shop or is this all your private collection at home?
