What a fantastic tree, but sadly i think it will die due to the lack of roots. I hope it doesnt 🙏 We need to work around the trees we want to possess and not make the tree work around us. Dig a wider deeper hole, get a tarpaulin to put on the car park to pile the soil up onto it, get a bigger pot, more sphanum. Its all part of learning. Now as buds are starting to push you need to black bag it to take the stress off what little root there is. Get some mycilium powder to sprinkle on the surface and water in. Good luck!
Thanks 😊 I'm hoping it survives too. It would be a shame to lose it. The tree seems to be doing fine so far but that could be just the stored up energy in the trunk. I will do an update either way. When I was digging it out space was limited on one side as there was a huge bush full of thorns but hopefully the next dig I will be more prepared 👍🏼 thanks for watching.
I have been collecting Yamadori for over 20 years. Don't think this oak tree will make it, though. You've definitely taken all of his roots from him. That's not a problem for a wisteria, for example. But an oak won't be able to do that. I wish the best and hope you will show us the tree next year still alive again. greetings from germany. Holger
Hi Holger. I hope so to my friend. I was very disappointed once the tree was out to discover the lack of feeder roots but hopefully with the after care and the moss I can generate new roots. I've got my fingers and toes crossed because this is a beast of a tree and I'd hate to lose it. Either way there will definitely be an update. 👍🏻☺️
Wow Chris that looks like some monster Oak tree! Hopefully she should recover well and become a fantastic bonsai. Merry Christmas and all the best for 2024!
Brilliant video, just been out and got myself an oak today! That’s why I came across your channel as I was searching through for more advice. Must say it’s nothing like the size of yours😅 but it’s a lovely little specimen. Will be following you to compare progress. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻 we both have success my friend.
Thank you my friend. I have a small oak on my channel as well. It has a playlist if you want to check it out 🙂. I'll have my fingers crossed for you too. Oaks are very picky, they need plenty of roots so I'm hoping the spagnam moss helps keep it alive.
That’s one chunky monkey. Fantastic find, it’s certainly going to be quite a specimen. My first yamadori was also an oak. North American Red oak (much larger leaves) with a very similar tap root and remaining roots. Looking forward to watching this develop into the future. Thanks, keep growing
@bonsaiexpression the reason for digging just before spring is the dormant buds start to swell. This means the stored energy from the roots is moving back up the tree. I would keep this oak somewhere warmer if possible like a greenhouse. Ive also seen people place a large clear bag over their plants and placed by a window. Best of luck mate
@shanewatson8581 thanks fella a lot of people have said the same about the bin bag. So I've got It covered with a clear one. Anything to improve my chances 😁
Thanks Duncan. I've left her alone since collecting and hopefully she wakes up soon. If she does I'm going to leave her to recover for a good 2 years 😁
Dug one out similar size few years ago. Didnt get a load of roots tith mine but it survived and is doing well. I'm actually airlayering the to off at the moment so fingers crossed yours makes it.
That's nice to know Chris. I know Oaks love to have a big root system. It's holding on so far. Still has healthy buds and branches. I'll do a follow up later in the year so hopefully it will be good news 🙂
I've put an airlayer on mine now because top is straight trunk but bottom has a big bend so hopefully will make 2 nice but very different types of tree.will try to do a video of it so you can see what I mean. Yours definitely has more roots than mine did so should make it. Fingers crossed 🤞
Hi Michael thanks for asking. It's still not pushed out yet, but the buds look healthy enough. I'm hoping they push in the next week or so. I've not had any die back and lots of buds appear on the branches. So all good signs so far 😁
@@bonsaiexpression great news I collected an Oak tree yamadori back in February my tree is doing well it's now pushing out leaves over this last two weeks 🌲🌲

If you watched the video you'd have seen that I said I removed it from my place of work, Not stolen my friend. The whole purpose of the video was to show it was my first yamadori. And as such lessons will be learnt from the whole experience to take away for the next dig. Following on from this video and update will be giving you show, did I manage to keep the tree alive? What did I do wrong if it died. What did I do wrong on the dig? What did I learn from the experience ect. You know the basic things people expect after a video like this. 😁
The buds look healthy so far and the branches are all flowing with sap now, so all being well the buds are going to push out in the next week or so. I'll be doing an update video in the summer to let everyone know if the miracle happened or not. 😁
@@bonsaiexpression i got 2 olive stumps from a nursery last year , they wer about to turn them into compost so i asked if i can take a few I should have taken the lot they wer arround 30 . What a beauty!!!! I would be thrilled to collect an oak this.
Thanks, let's just hope she makes it through the winter 🤞🏻
I love me some Yamadori! Great find. Cheers from Ojai California
Thanks Jason I wish I had some where close by I could collect more trees from. Hard work but fun.
Awesome tree! Can't wait to see updates. Excellent car taste!
Thanks man hopefully it survives after all that effort. The cars my baby 😁
Wow that is a huge oak! Super excited to see how this develops come spring! Looking forward to more updates on it!
Funny how they don't seem that big in the wild eh Dave 🫣. Fingers crossed she makes it over winter then we can have some fun styling her 😁
@@bonsaiexpression They always look smaller in the wild for sure! Fingers crossed we see some green leaves in the spring!
@dreamingofbonsai I hope so my friend 🤞🏻
Great find. Worth the work you put in for sure. Hope it recovers easily.
Here's hoping Steve 👍🏻

Need a reciprocating saw - best things ever for collecting, Good job
Agreed. Put it on my Christmas list 😄
Ahhh sometimes they fight you all the way! Epic Urban Yama

Deciduous trees are best dug up just before spring.
Fingers crossed 🤞 because this is a belter

Try the black bag treatment, it worked really well for my oaks...
Not a bad shout, can't hurt to try 👍🏻
I've collected big oaks like yours. I wouldn't chop any more off the top until you know its alive next spring

You need a zaw saw! It’ll make things easier!
It's doing OK so far. Nothing has died back and the buds all seem healthy so far. I agree 100 percent. A zaw saw is the way to go. 👍🏻
