It was kind of thought like "oh well he's appointed by God, and he's also a man, therefore who are we to object?". Papers might have reported on it, but Kings taking mistresses or kept men was extremely common and tolerated. Jeanne Du Barry was an unusual choice, but absolutely not the first commoner to be selected as a royal mistress (Madame Pompadour, etc). Plus, being the king's Mistress was a pretty sweet gig if you could get it. Tons of perks, swag, money, properties, and you had a lot of influence over the king's decisions, without the job of having to represent the state everywhere and produce an heir that might have webbed feet due to inbreeding.
