Yuqi sings "Could it be" as her solo stage during (G)I-dle concerts while playing her acoustic guitar. She's been singing that song regularly for about 8 months. She finally officially released the song for her solo album.
she talked so much about confidence before her solo at our concert, she is such a great idol and loves her job. I almost cried while she played this song, everbody sang along it was epic 😂
Yuqi has also talked about this issue before and confided that she is more confident when composing lyrics in her second language which is English and her third language is Korean. Being able to communicate well is one thing but also composing it. People who need more "deep and scholarly" vocabulary will not be confident in English
Ngl my fav is still Giant Chinese ver, the lyrics were very deep. You can fit more words in a single verse in Chinese than you can with Korean or English
Yuqi likely writes songs in English mostly because she learned English much earlier in life than she learned Korean. I'd love to see her writing songs and singing in Mandarin too.
She's also said that she considers herself a literal "California girl". Her spoken English is strongly American-accented, so I imagine North America is her target market.
Lyrics and mv are about accepting others despite them being scary "freaks", and also accepting she is a "freak" too. That can be interpreted in many ways, which provides a possible deniability in case phobics' sensitivies are ruffled. The sapphic interpretation works even when she refers to herself at the end. Wouldnt it be scary realizing you are lgbt in an extreme conservative society like China or Korea? And that fear is represented by all the scary movies characters. Then even when she switches the pronoun to I at the end, she still continues with "the way SHE is moving got me crazy got me weak". The pronuns are not changed there. It totaly sounds like someone's first gay crush, and all the insecurities that can bring. Of course I dont think she thought that far ahead, Yuqi being Yuqi, means she is likely talking about loving youself as you are in a broad sense.
That's the beauty of art it's subject to personal interpretation. For you lesbian anthem for me she dropped it because I'm watching eom reactions who's having fan wars over best horror films and creating a tier rating. It's amazing how art tells us more about ourselves than the artist creating it. Still much love for you and Yuqi
I have been waiting patiently since yesterday for your reaction, Kaia, just because I know how gay you are:> Seriously tho, this was such a great time watching your opinion and thoughts of both songs. And since Yuqi is my all time ult, I couldn't be any more excited and thrilled about FREAK, both the song and the MV, and of course the rest of the mini album (7 TRACKSSS AAAHHHH). This is such a happy experience for me and now it's complete with you💖
Why English? I think Yuqi is already pretty well known internationally. Big in Korea, Thailand, Taiwan, and others... HUGE in China. English is the international language of music. People worldwide (generally) understand at least a little bit of English. I think this is also why Soyeon throws a bit of English into her songs, and it doesn't matter if the grammar is correct or "cringy"... the words are just there to help the listener know what the song is about. Just understanding a little bit of the lyrics helps people get an idea for what the song is about, and more people can understand a wee bit of English than Korean, or even Mandarin (worldwide).
just like many other Kpop idols, they want to expand their music career beyond Kpop or the land of Korea. so singing English songs is only logical for global music markets in general. people are in denial if they think global pop music that are dominating global music markets are not sung in English. it has been like that since the day ones when pop music was created in the US and/or the UK. it will remain like that until no more pop music in the US, otherwise, people just have to admit it regardless of whether they like it or not. now you know why it is a big news or a headline when some Kpop singers sing English songs and make it to billboard Hot 100. for Yuqi, her debut album is not just for Korea market but rather than for some other music markets as well. probably some music markets in the west or she just wanna do something different than just has her solo as a Kpop idol. afterall she has been a Kpop idol in her whole music career. so why not try something different while she is being allowed or being able to do so. BTW objectively speaking her solo debut album is quite good.
For non-Korean Idol, like Yuqi, Ten, Lisa and BamBam, the English is fit for them cause more fans of them are outside Korean but they still have Korean or English mixed Korean songs too English in B-side too.
For me english isn't my first language but since I use it often daily english has become a language that I can express emotion more naturally so maybe Yuqi has the same type of feeling
I guess it's because she is chinese, her group is settled in Korea and G-Idle has a massive international fanbase. So I think songs in English contemplate the majority of the fans.
Maybe English songs can be understood by more fans. But the group needs to perform more in Korea. So there must be Korean.Otherwise, it will be difficult for the group to be in Korea.
What? A member of (G)I-DLE doing a lesbian anthem? No way? Not possible. Not from (G)I-DLE?! lol BUTTTTTT yeeeaaaahhhhh. Pretty sure Yuqi knows exactly how people are going to take Freak, lol

Her English is impressive; you can truly sense Yuqi's personality in her music. The chorus of FREAK is undeniably addictive.
When you see the aesthetic of Freak vs Could It Be you wouldn't think that they share the same message but they do. :) LOVE YOURSELF.

This is the one, this is the correct answer, no other answer to the question of why she composes in English has any basis in known information.

It's definitely a self love anthem. Women loving women? Yeah, I can see that. Lesbian anthem? Nah, bro. Don't make this song about sex.
