The Brick City. The city where I learned to ride a bike, play every single sport you can imagine and avoid getting hit by a car while catching a touchdown! Newark has a rich history unfortunately some of that history hurts. I recall my parents telling me stories about trying to rent an apartment but being denied because they were Spanish. I will always carry Newark with me where ever i go in the world.
I was born and raised on the south side of Newark and as an adult lived in North newark so I know first-hand that the disparity still exists. Its interesting how some things never change. I'm not saying north newark is so beautiful and peaceful but lets just say I felt safer walking down the street at night in north newark than on south orange ave.
Today it feels the same nothing about what you said has changed.... it's safer to walk in North Newark than to walk in the south ward. .. that has never changed. ..
This is the Newark I remember. You captured what I call, The American Dream and the American Nightmare. This important film brilliantly captures that contrast.
The riots were nuts. Crazy shit. Anthony Imperiale. 1st Ward held. Hung tough for a long time. Forest Hill, like another world. Good food, good bread. Tony's hotdogs, the originals, hot onions, chocolate cow. Iron bound, good food if you knew where to go. Cafe Italian, Emilia's, Nastos. But Newark was always plagued with drugs, shame. Many of the kids in the inner city didn't stand a chance. Newark could be a very dangerous place if you were in the wrong place. Hope things are better.
Graduated HS the year this was filmed. I know intimately about the plight and flight of Newark. And it is not black and white. It's family... It's opportunity.... It's education... It's community... It's faith. When children are not given the dreams they need to grow, great cities, like Newark, could no longer survive.
I was born in Newark in July of 67, my mother told me that she had to take a cab to the hospital because the rioters overturned the ambulance. I left in 07 but travel back once a year and from my point of view ... it's been up and down as far as crime, a lot has changed over the past 10 to 12 years , it at least LOOKS BETTER in some areas than it did b4 i left.
@Joesavana Thanks for the upload! By the way, I really do hope that Newark will get MUCH better and have a MUCH better image for big cities in the United States, even though it has gone through a LOT of problems over the years, especially after the riots of 1967.
Many people who live in the Bloomfield and Belleville areas won’t really know what it’s like for us people who live in Newarks hood.Did you know that science park high school gets more recognition than Essex County College does itself.Which is kind of sad,but yet understandable.
Amazing footage. It is sad though that the majority of the footage was filmed in desolate run down areas. Newark had several beautiful areas then and now. Was this after the riots?
Hey Joe, This is a great piece of history ! I love this ! The music is excellent. During this time, the East Harlem riots took place also in July 67'. Mayor Lindsay had did his usual walk and toured portions of the neighborhood where the riots took place. Aretha Franklin, James Brown and Bettye Swann had the top soul records in the country. Great post !
In your video I spotted the old bowling alley (which is no longer there) on Bloomfield Ave. Newark has come a long way since 1967. Although, having grown up in Newark and lived through the riots, there is still a lot of work to do there. I no longer live there, but as they say you could take the girl out of Newark, but you can't take Newark out of the girl. ;D
@ CircusMaximus09 - Based on your reply, I doubt you know WHY the city deteriorated. There were politics involved, many years of poor financial planning by city officials, populations of people moved after the riots which hurt the city's economy, etc. You WORKED in newark, which means you know nothing about the city's culture, diversity and the different neighborhoods. You probably know nothing about the city's people so how can you judge them. DONT base your opinions on media and hearsay.
I'd like to step back from the subject of Newark for a moment and point out that the jazzy upbeat music that has been placed on this series of clips could not be more thematically irrelevent to the clips themselves. The only perceptible link is that the clips are "old," like the music. But the bleakness of the clips is overwhelming and the music is too energetic. I'd also like to ask whether the cameraman, Joseph Sarto, is related to Giuseppe Sarto, Pope Pius X.
Ah, I love this video. It was never exactly a crowned jewel, but it’s such an interesting manufacturing hub that was always full of innovators and talent. The city has gone through some rough times, but ultimately prevailed and is full of potential today with a handful of projects that will transform the downtown area. Albeit still a bit run down in parts, I would still encourage more people to invest in Newark now while it’s still relatively affordable. I especially find Newarks downtown more interesting than Jersey City’s downtown for example, which has sort of become a soulless place full of expats and gentrifiers by comparison. Newark still has a lot of soul. People just have a habit of shitting on the city like it’s the 80s instead of respecting the city for all its strides. It has so much potential. Places like Atlanta, Houston or Miami are literally worst (crime wise) yet people move to these places in droves, only making them worse.
i lived in newark most of my life but left in 2001. what you all are missing is the difference in population density and class. "down neck" you have a lot of homes where in the other sections of newark you have extremely poor unemployed people housed in high rise projects stretching for blocks and blocks with no jobs in sight. it's just very sad but hopefully not still this way. shout out to oliver street school! thank you for the video.
I was born and raised in Newark NJ. All I ever see or hear is "the riots". How about Newark before the cotton-picking riot? I remember a beautiful city before 1967. So much to see and so much to do. Excellent schools.Fantastic restaurants. Great parks, plenty of jobs, Clean neighborhoods with plenty of trees. Not perfect but better than many other cities. Those few days of vandalizing is what everyone keeps pointing to. Not even a riot

I was going to work downtown one night and saw white folk out walking their dogs. Mulberry street is already gone, not a memory left. My momma use to take me down there when I was a kid.
@Joesavana I have to agree that Newark is much better now except tath I almost got hit by that damn train that runs down Broad St that I didn't remember was there. They could also use some new asphalt on Broad St as it sucks. I'll bet that they have better roads in Iraq.
