  • We go hands-on with the Varjo XR-1, a passthrough mixed-reality headset using Varjo's high-resolution VR-1 hybrid display. Chatting with Varjo's founder, we discuss the technology that allows for low latency passthrough augmented reality. Plus, we also go hands-on with Logitech's Ink Pilot Edition stylus designed for use in VR!

    Goes to show, passthrough is the ultimate AR & VR. All the Magic Leaps and Hololens of the future will only be as good as their optics, and their optics progress slowly. Those headsets will always be hampered by refraction, secondary reflections and so on. With passthrough the optics are not the issue, it becomes an issue of cameras, displays, and software, things that advance technologically much faster. With passthrough, you could turn off the lights, or change or augment anything or nothing. It holds the ultimate potential if the displays can get better and the cameras/HDR issues can be solved. Enter next gen micro LEDs, light field headsets and new types of cameras. The curious thing is why feed all the real-world camera data to the computer and back again? It seems some local chip on the headset should be able to handle that if the cameras improve. That would leave the augmenting and interpreting tasks to the GPUs.

    • @Jerzzylo
      @Jerzzylo 5 років тому

      It makes more sense to have a gpu do all processing since it is much easier to just upgrade a gpu to increase performance than to buy a new hmd every year or so. Also makes the headset lighter, less complex and cheaper. You would possibly even need some kind of active cooling.

    • @kazioo2
      @kazioo2 5 років тому +8

      The problem of pass-through (or in-vr mixed reality) is that you are suddenly limiting your significantly superior natural vision with limitations of cameras and displays that may not be fully solved in this century (dynamic range, resolution, various display-related artifacts - each tech has different). With the overlay AR you are only affecting digital stuff and reality remains good quality. In other words: both approaches have their huge pros and huge cons. If you really care about both aspects both are terrible and that won't change in the near future,

    • @Gigator
      @Gigator 5 років тому

      There is a lot of backlash to wearing anything that covers up a huge part of your head and face. I know a lot of people who will never wear something like this (not least of which for reasons of looks and messed up hair). So the Hololens, nearly non intrusive glasses type of AR is still superior in that respect and much more acceptable for the majority of people. But also more difficult to achieve.

    • @1337pianoman
      @1337pianoman 5 років тому +1

      You need to send the camera feed back to the gpu anyway so that it can do all of the image processing so that it knows where to overlay stuff. If the headset composited gpu feed and the camera feed, they would be out of sync because the gpu is working with older camera information.
      Having said that, the gpu could use its most recent camera frame and the headset could do the composition along with some asynchronous space-warp magic. I wonder if that's what they're already doing?

    • @pfschuyler
      @pfschuyler 5 років тому +1

      @@@kazioo2 There's this common bias that says human vision is impossibly superior to technological cameras. But the camera is not a fixed thing...it evolves. Look at how 15 years ago hand-held cameras were the only way to take pictures(now its 90% phone cameras). Also, cameras do not have to be similar to the human eye in the same sense that a plane's wing doesn't have to be like a bird's wing. Take high speed cameras, video cameras, UV cameras, long exposure cameras, and so on. Maybe you have 20 different mini camera with different exposures. Maybe it'll be any combination of these or emerging camera technologies. Human vision is ultra-subtle and dynamic, but it does not evolve like our technology does.

    That pen thing from logitech is actually pretty exciting... I was watching a video last night of a Disney artist following a Bob Ross painting tutorial show, and the problem she had was that it was hard to simulate real brushes with a digital pen. But with that thing, you could not only simulate ANY kind of real life brush, but you could invent whole new kinds of tools that wouldn't even be possible in the real world.

    The Oculus Quest's passthrough system, when it shows you where the guardian "cage" is in the real world, in spite of being black and white and 30ish fps and not being scale-correct, is still better AR than both the hololens and the magic leap. I wish they would let developers experiment with building "mixed-reality" applications using the cameras! After using the quest and seeing the launch of the Varjo XR-1, my opinion about the future of AR has totally changed, and I think passthrough is the way to go.

    If they were able to have a larger human eye resolution display in this thing, they could save on the bandwidth by only illuminating and rendering the portion of the image where the eye tracking was pointing. In that case, through the optical combiner they have, anywhere you looked would be extremely high resolution. It would be hardware-side NON-fixed foviated rendering.
    I'm sure the financial price of a pair of those screens, though, worries them more than the additional bandwidth and processing cost of rendering at retina resolution to the whole field of view.

  • @d3tach3d
    @d3tach3d 5 років тому +1

    They have the right idea. More pixels in the center and less on the periphery. This is needed badly since we all dont have SLI 2080s trying to render 8k. Best VR innovation so far IMO. We need this in the gaming space but im not sure how difficult it would be to get the games to render in the special way it needs.

    I'm really excited about the possibilities of Augmented Reality, and have been since reading the book Rainbows End. I think this tech has got massive potential and in the not-to-distant future will be as widely used as smartphones are today. I've been disappointed by its progress but it seems like over the past few years it has really come along and is almost on the verge of being ready for widespread consumer adoption. It still needs to get smaller and be almost indistinguishable from normal glasses or sunglasses if it is going to be something that people wear and use all the time. I've heard rumours that Apple have been working on an AR device for sometime and they could be the company that is able to bring AR into the mainstream. I would love to hear from people knowledgeable on this subject about what they think about the possibility of this tech being shrunk down to almost the size of a normal pair of glasses. Is this even possible and if so how far away do you think we are from reaching that stage?

    Tested the VR-1 last month for the USAF in a flight sim using Prepar3D. Not seamless enough... And couldn't get rid of screen tearing no matter what settings I used and field of view was somewhat narrow.. Would probably be great for design work with a stationary subject but not great for a flight sim. Also, doesn't work in SteamVR. We're going with the XTAL. Wider field of view no screen tearing and works in SteamVR. Important for us as we're probably moving to X-Plane 11. Better flight model.

    What Varjo is working on is literally the one missing feature that has kept me away from getting my own headset so far. Last thing you want to do is backhand a toddler or dog, or punch your wall. I really like their work around with the camera passthrough. That's pretty brilliant when combined with their dual panel hardware. As for the Logitech pen, not really interested. Doesn't make a lot of sense in a single artist application. Could be great though in a team setting. Being able to easily share and work on something with others in VR would be cool.

      Nope, that will make for seriously bad motion sickness. Traditional mounted FPPOV quadcopter racing is still the best way to fly.

    Guys if you want to see truly no compromise VR headset you should check out XTAL

    • @evolicious
      @evolicious 5 років тому

      XTAL compromises in SDE, 70hz (below what is acceptable for VR-presence)(limited by DP1.2, which is terrible), and requires the top-end GPU (obviously).
      XTAL is full of compromises for the FOV and clarity. Is still (arguably against the Reverb) the best HMD for simming.
      The price is also the reason that no one is buying it, $5,800.

      Also, you can't buy it without a business licence and win approval. You also will need a team of devs to build the environment for it. The VR-1 is purely a niche commercial device. Still cool and still effects the consumer market.
