For those wondering, no, woodpeckers don't get concussions even after doing it on metal. The reason they don't isn't because the brain is protected by a cushion (contrary to popular belief) but by its tiny size and weight, based on a July 2022 study. Their brain is just too small for the shocks to have an impact. This study, which put tracking points on the head and beak through technology and watched in slow-motion, revealed that a woodpecker's head functions as just a hammer. "If you’re driving a nail with a hammer, you don’t want to put a pillow between the hammer and the nail.”, as a biomechanist put it. Woodpeckers also have a third eyelid (called the nictitating membrane), which close at the moment of every impact and guards it from wind, dust, and hazards from the wood.
@@johnpaulcross424 That's one of the things that is basically disproven with the newer studies. The movement of the brain and skull seems to be synced up, there seems to be no cushioning going on.
No, he checks for predators. Animals drink at a watering hole, in Africa, the same way. If your head is down for too long - you are a prey. It's a defense mechanism.

Ah the woodpecker way... it is not the human way... or isn't it? Make as loud a noise as possible... attract attention to one self... the female ones will notice it and be impressed... pretty similar actually :D
Woodpeckers aren't just looking for bugs. They also communicate with each other by "pecking" or drumming on trees. So maybe this guy is like that loud dude at the bar who says, "Hey everybody, gather around while I tell you how awesome I am."
@@enfers2256 Don't get me wrong, I'm all in with our avian friends! I've got binoculars and a pile of bird guides, and I go out birding several times a year.🐦I occasionally hear woodpeckers tapping on my house's siding, and as long as they don't poke holes in it, I'm cool with that!

It's well known that invading squirrels panic and retreat at the sound of an MG-42 being fired. This brave Woodpecker is protecting your bunker from the invading squirrel army. Rest assured that your nuts are well protected.
The sound of a machine gun was very frequently compared to that of a sewing machine in and before WW1, when people weren't yet very familiar with the idea, so your observation is pretty fitting. I quite like the Russian nickname for the MG42, myself - "Hitler's Zipper".
We also had a Northern Flicker do that to us...every damn morning...rat-a-tat-tat on our vent on the roof...finally had enough of it and sprayed it down with a rubber substance to stay asleep!
Finally figured out this is what I was hearing! The sound is twice as loud inside the house, I was wondering if the neighbors were doing construction :)
It’s as simple as this, what he’s doing is called drumming it’s one of the calls they make to attract a mate or communicate. Some birds learn that metal makes a louder noise than wood does when they drum on it and that’s all there is to it. He’s trying to make is presence known
For the past few days my daughter was bewildered at a noise coming from our sun room. The noise would begin around 5:30am. In our sun room is a wood stove. Today I filmed it hoping to capture the sound. I got lucky and not only recorded the drumming but also the song. I had guessed it was a woodpecker as ai have seen one perform this drumming on a neighbors metal chimney top across the street. Hopefully over the coming days I’ll capture the little bugger as viewed from outside drumming on my chimney.
Even out here in Phoenix, AZ, we have a similar woodpecker that loves to peck at our fireplace every morning about 7:30 AM! And, yes, it does sound like a jackhammer!! I go out there with a towel to "shoo" it away!
You have it close that’s what they have found out BUGS or food for themselves they also do it on sides of our homes and they love gutters the bugs run out breakfast !! I watch them with my coffee
We had a woodpecker repeatedly showing up to do this on our gutters one year. It really got your attention and it took me a couple months to figure out what the hell was going on.
You're not the only one. This has happened to me many of times. Wait 'til you get a Pileated woodpecker to do the banging. They start out really slow and work their way up to speed.
I had the same problem on the same type of chimney cap. I took some stiff galvanized rat wire that I cut about 5" wide and wrapped it around the top of the cap and used sheet metal screws with galvanized washers to secure it to the top of the cap extending it about 4" higher above the top of the cap and then I cut some more rat wire to fit the top circle and secured it tightly with some #12 solid copper wire. Problem solved.
I have this same situation on my chimney. For quite a while it was a mystery but I figured it out one morning while standing in the yard with a cup of coffee. I also wondered: why?! I guess it could be mating (calling a mate/ signaling readiness), an attempt to drive out insects to eat, or just a habit that it will never get over. "I get a headache if i don't peck at least 5 hours a day."
Either it thinks there are insects in there, or it just likes the sound. When woodpeckers land on trees they usually litsen if there are insects there so maybe it heard something inside your chimney.
It kinda looks like hes into it, does a little volley-peck and pauses, probably still feeling that metallic aftershock on his beak. That is a goofy-looking woodpecker too, never heard of a Northern Flickers. Most of our woodpeckers in the states are smaller in size
Drumming is the way that woodpeckers establish territory and attract mates. This Northern Flicker has decided that your metal chimney makes a cool loud sound which he feels certain will attract the ladies. Unfortunately, drumming on your chimney, though it may be appealing to potential mates, isn't conducive to seeping in on days off.
