Glad I ran across this review. Gained quite a bit of insight. I too was curious as to the quality and reliability of the Komplete Audio interfaces after seeing several reviews. Looks like it may be worth a shot.
Thanks JD! Believe me, I'm always finding new nerdy stuff in Reaper as well. I feel like no matter how much I use it, I still haven't even scratched the surface of what it can do. That's why I love it so much :)
That sounds great! I just got the 6 and I’ve spent a couple of days downloading the software and also some amp sims. It came with guitar rig 5 for one. Still getting there learning how all this works :) thanks a lot!
It has a really nice warm sound which is great for voice. I'm from the origins of digital recording in the late 90s - if I had this back then, it would have been a dream.
I so got a Pink Floyd jibe off that track. That's 2 tracks I have heard from you whilst watching some of your vids (Last one on the MOTU M4) and I really liked them both. I'm actually looking to get the smaller version of this the NI KA 1, but hopefully, the sound is as good as this version. Thanks for the reviews. The last guy I started to watch reviewing this, forgot the name of what he was reviewing and got turned off :p Glad there are professionals out there like you to help.
LOL Goodness I'm pretty sure that Chad's wife would love him to describe her the same way he described those knobs :P Great tune as usual. Come here for the tunes and stay for the knob descriptions :)
Thanks! I really like vocoders ever since I heard one on Ozzy Osbourne's Miracle Man when I was in high school. That kinda dates me, doesn't it? But once I figured out how to do it, I've been trying to find ways to fit it into mixes (mostly without any luck).
@@GL64 I actually did a video on that same vocoder a few years ago. I'm sure it could use some updating, since I've learned a thing or two since way back then :D
So I'm kinda new to this and hope you see this and can help me out. I have a midi keyboard (Arturia KeyLab 61 mk2) and I use it to make songs with a daw. Now I do need a audio interface for a better sound quality. My question is: can I connect my midi keyboard to this audio interface? Because I've also seen other outputs called 'midi outputs'...are those exclusively for midi keyboards? I was thinking about the NI KA 2 or the Focusrite 2i2 3rd gen. Thanks for the great review by the way!
I haven't used the KeyLab personally, but looking at the specs for it, it can use either 5-pin MIDI or USB to pass a MIDI signal. Neither the KA2 nor the 2i2 have 5-pin MIDI in/out, but you could still connect your KeyLab to your computer (and install the appropriate drivers) and use it as a MIDI device that way. Or, you could get an interface that has 5-pin MIDI in/out and connect it that way. Either way works. About the only advantages I can think of for using 5-pin MIDI is that you can get away with a longer cable compared to USB, and some devices have a MIDI through that allows you to daisy-chain multiple MIDI devices together, rather than using up a bunch of USB ports on your computer.
I stumbled upon this video while looking for KA2 reviews... and I am blown away by your song! Who are you and where can I get that song and more like it!?!?!?! Also, excellent review!!!
Hey thanks so much! At this time I don't have any place where I post these songs, but I'll eventually set up a website or maybe re-record them and try to get them on Spotify or something.
Good day! Love this video! I'm getting this unit shortly and initially will be using it to hook up a mic and guitar on Zoom meetings. Do I need any special settings? Hope I'm not out of context here. Appreciate any insights. Thank you!
hey great vid. ive just bought the komplete audio 1. what software are you using to record/mix the track? I am trying to use audacity but hoping there is an alternative? thanks
Thanks so much! I'm using Reaper (free to try indefinitely, &60 for a license). You might also give a try to Cakewalk, which is free. Same for Tracktion, it's a freebie as well. There are also free basic versions of Studio One and Pro Tools if you want to give those a try.
Thank you very much for the reviews for the USB audio interfaces. Since I saw the first review I have followed. I need help choosing USB audio interface, at first I started by selecting : Roland Rubix24 (or 44 with more inputs); Focusrite scarlett 2i2 (to be compared should be the 4i4 with midi out); Steinberg ur22c; Mackie Onyx 2x2; Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6 (most expensive of all) I also saw the MOTU M4 review, impressive, but it is more expensive, as the M2 does not have an input - playback control knob. Finally I came to the conclusion of two: Roland Rubix24 (or 44) or Komplete Audio 6. How did you test both which in your opinion is the best? The difference in money between the two is 40 € or the same amount with Rubix44. Justify the difference? Are there better ones by value? NI Komplete Audio I read that the input - host knob does not work as well as the other input - playback knob interfaces, it is true. And that the connected instrument does not sound in the monitors (speakers). Indicate which one you liked most and most functional, for me it is important midi input / output input, so I discarded the Komplete Audio 2. External power is important or usb is it enough? Can NI Komplete Audio 6 connect to iPhone or iPad (not necessary for now)? How does it provide extra energy? It was an excellent review of these 5 (or 6 with Motu) USB audio interfaces, I think you just haven't tried Mackie Onyx. Thank you and keep up the good work.
Thanks so much! (and sorry for the delayed reply) Between the Rubix and the Komplete Audio, I guess it depends on what you'll be using the interface for. The big differences that I see are that the Rubix44 has 4 built-in mic preamps but the KA6 only has 2. And the KA6 has dual headphone outputs while the Rubix44 only has 1. It looks like the Rubix has some built-in compression/limiting and some routing options when it comes to monitoring through headphones. But the KA6 comes with an awesome software bundle. Personally I like running just off of USB bus power. That's at least 1 fewer cable in a jungle of cables in my studio. The going theory is that external power can help give preamps extra headroom, but I'm still not convinced that's true. I haven't had any issues running all of these interfaces off of bus power, and they still seem perfectly capable of supplying 48V to multiple microphones.
@@YHRS Thanks for the answer. It was useful. When I saw your review of the Motu M4, as I said, I was impressed, because I didn't know it. Since then, I have read and seen films and now I am inclined to purchase the Motu M2, even if it does not have so many entries, but the quantity is impressive. What do you think? Otherwise, I'll bet on Roland Rubix. Thank you very much.
Great Video :) 1 question: I bought the Komplete Audio 2 interface a couple of days ago with the purpose of connecting my amp through it, I have a Fender Mustang GT 100. Turns out the output lines on it are 2 XLR Cables with a left and right output channel (L & R). This confused me as I was under the impression all amps have a single line out channel which can be directly plugged into the interface. Could I use the 2 input channels from the interface to receive the L & R signals coming from my amp? Thanks in advance, love your videos!
Ooh, interesting. Looking at the GT-100, it's got stereo XLR line outputs. That's a new one to me! Most of the time, the left side of a stereo output like that is going to be the mono output, but it's usually labeled as such. I don't see any indication that the L side is a mono output on its own. But yes, you can go from those line outputs to the line inputs on your interface (XLR to 1/4" TRS). If you're using stereo effects on the GT-100, plug them both in and send them to a stereo track in your DAW. If you're not using anything that would benefit from a stereo signal, I'd probably try using just the L output to a single mono track in your DAW and see how it goes. Let us know how it goes!
Thanks for the review! When you are using direct monitoring, is the audio routed to the main outs or just the headphones? Another reviewer thought they didn't go to the main outs, which would be a big issue.
Thanks! The main outputs are what you're hearing throughout the video, so I can say that the direct monitor definitely does get routed to the main outputs.
@@YHRS So even if I don't even have a DAW open, but the interface is powered up by the usb port, I can plug a source in and hear it through my control room monitors? (as long as the direct/mix knob has some amount of direct dialed in? That's what the other video seemed to imply didn't work. ) Thanks!
@@SadisticKillerXx I ended up not going with that unit, mainly because the software reviews for Guitar Rig implied it was going out of support in the near future, if I remember correctly.
I think that the ID4 will be my next interface to test out. People that like the Audient stuff seem to REALLY like it, so I'm curious about trying one out for myself. The ID4 only has one mic preamp, and it comes at a higher cost. I'll have to see if the quality justifies the smaller feature set and higher price.
How do I get this set up to use just as input to my computer? I go to settings and sound for windows 10 . I have chosen the komplete audio 1 as input. I can see its getting input, but I cant hear output from a head set
When you set the Komplete Audio 1 as your sound device, it will handle both input and output for your computer. Your headphones and speakers will need to be plugged into the KA1 and not the headphone jack on your computer.
Thanks Ray! It's funny, I didn't have Pink Floyd in mind at all while I was making this. But now that a couple people have mentioned it, I can't deny the resemblance :)
Hello, I have a real issue problem here with Komplete audio 1. I am using FL Studio 20, and while is my KA1 connected as Komplete asio drive sound from other applications like youtube, like mp3 or fb videos coming through the computer speakers and not my big JBL speakers, like from FL Studio. When i change the audio settings to FL ASIO drive, everything works perfecly well everytwhere. I tried everything. setup is correct.. I have no idea, where is the problem.. Any ideas? Thanks for help.
Thanks! I haven't released it yet, but I've been thinking about re-recording a collection of these interface demo songs and putting them out. I'm bad about following through on these things though :)
Since this interface doesn't have a 5-pin MIDI input, you'll have to use MIDI via USB. That would be either a MIDI controller that plugs directly into the computer via USB, or a MIDI to USB interface.
I'm in the same situation right now, but I figured I'd rather get KA2 since I will be using it for a long time and having balanced output gives you the best sound possible without noise
Anyone else having issues getting this set-up and working with FL Studio? I have downloaded all the drivers and installed the required plugins, I can see the device appearing in FL Studios with the correct driver, but when using it I am getting no mic or instrument input and the driver status shows as 'stopped'
Thanks for your video... Just bought Komplete Audio 2, second day I used it, LED won't light but unit works, any cues what the problem is? Use a Mac IOS 11.2.1
Hmmm, I can't say that I've run into that issue myself. You might try it on a different USB port and see if it re-detects and comes back to life. If you're using a USB hub, make sure that the hub is powered with a full 5V. That's about all I can think of, outside of a faulty unit.
They're really similar interfaces, so it comes down to your preference. I'm kinda partial to the KA2 over the 2i2, but they're both great entry-level interfaces. The KA2 comes with a software bundle that's more geared towards the electronic musician, the Scarlett comes with a software bundle more geared towards DAW effects. They're both a great value, so you can't really make a bad choice :-)
I would like need advice. I use my native instruments komplete audio 1 Please can you let me know how must be exactly correct setting and what I give to lines ? 1 Driver Type 2 Audio Input Device 3 Audio Output Device
Can you control you studio monitors and your headphones with a seperate knob? I Have the focusrite right now but I might refund it just because it doesn't have that!
Trying to plug my guitar into ableton which has bias amp plugin added. When I have ASIO and komplete audio 2 setup I can see the sound bars going up and down but can't hear anything. I only get sound when I have the MME/Direct X driver but it sounds awful with all of this delay and crackling. Any advice this has been going on for days and I haven't figured out what's wrong. The komplete audio ASIO also does not work on the bias amp program. While the default windows driver does.
Oh absolutely, it's a lightweight and very capable little interface! My wife and I have been having discussions about my inability to finish music projects. Typically the state that they end up in for these videos is where they stay forever. But I WANT to finish them. My wife might start cracking the whip to get that accomplished :)
Question for reference, can I hook a KA1 or 2 up to Daw like FL20 and use guitar rig having its output set to studio monitor (speakers) with 0 latency?
No need to panic, since they're both very good interfaces. There's no bad choice! If you'll benefit from the software instruments, then the KA2 would be a good choice. If you'd benefit from the Focusrite plugin bundle of VST FX, then that'd be a great choice. I haven't used an M-Audio interface since way back with their Delta series, so I can't help on that one. But there's hardly a bad choice on today's market.
Hi. I have a question. You was reviewing both of interfaces that i am thinking of now: Roland RUBIX and NATIVE AUDIO (the difference is, that i want an audio 6 or rubix 44, cause i need more i/o). So my questions is, which interface of this two has better preamps and which you will be choose for recording vocals and guitars (electric and bass). Thank you for response.
The preamps are really close between these two interfaces (actually, that's true for all of the interfaces that I've used). If anything, the Roland is maybe a little bit flatter. But they both have ample gain and headroom and I didn't have troubles with too low or too high of sensitivity with either.
If you're recording vocals through a microphone into the XLR input of the KA2, then the line and instrument setting won't matter to you. Those control the input signal strength of the 1/4" inputs, and they tell the interface whether to expect a line-level signal or an instrument-level signal. That switch position won't affect how the XLR microphone input behaves.
The KA2 doesn't have MIDI in/out, so you'd need a keyboard that connects to the computer via USB. If your keyboard only has 5-pin MIDI in/out, then you'd need to step up to an audio interface that has 5-pin MIDI in/out (like the KA6 or Steinberg UR22 or Roland Rubix 22).
Hi, anyone is having issues with Komplete Audio 2 and High Sierra OSX? I am not able to see the sound card on the sound preferences, it is like the computer is not detecting the device, my OSX version is 10.13.6, any advice is welcome
You'll need to connect it to a computer in order to get power to it over USB, and in order to send any signal through it. It doesn't have any bluetooth connectivity so you'll need to connect it via the 1/4" TRS main outputs on the back to any powered speaker.
DAW software is a really subjective thing. I think that the best approach to finding the best software for you is to download the demo versions of several, and try them out for yourself. You can get a feel for their user experience and workflow and make a decision on which one you like best. Every brand (except Apple) has demo versions of their DAW available, and they're all free to try for a period of time.
Unfortunately, I don't have a Mac to try it on. But as far as I understand, you don't need drivers or anything to get it to work on a Mac. Native Instruments has a quick start guide here: www.native-instruments.com/en/komplete-audio-2-quickstart/
I wondered about the MIDI jacks as well but, in actuality, USB transmits data 15 THOUSAND times faster than MIDI anyways, so why bother? (other than for vintage keyboards/FX devices, which would not have USB ports)
Hi I was wondering do you you have the keyboard connected to the computer as well as the audio interface ? or do you connect the keyboard to the audio interface (pls help anyone )
Your Home Recording Studio , thanks sooo much, also would you have to have it like that if you would play let’s say a live performance? Would you just need to plug the output from the interface to a speaker?
If you're talking about a "loopback" feature that'll capture the playback as inputs, then that is correct, there is no loopback feature on the KA2. The only interface in this price range that I'm aware of a loopback feature is the Steinberg UR22mkII.
Dear sir i have old laptop lenovo window 7 32 bit 4gb ram dual core processor This audio interface will work on laptop if not then what is that Audio Interface ?
For recording audio tracks, that computer will work fine. It doesn't take much processing power to record audio, even at pretty high sample rates. However, that computer will struggle when it comes to mixing. Especially if you use a lot of VST effects and virtual instruments.
Its tiny.. sexy.. I have Komplete Audio6. Its totally worth the few extra bucks. Its not only for more inputs, but it comes with intergrated midi interfrace and 2 spdif in/out on channels 5 and 6.
I liked the KA2 so much that I bought a KA6 for myself. Although I never did find a use for the S/PDIF in/out. I haven't owned any S/PDIF gear in a long, long time :)
@@YHRS It should be possible to sync 2 audio interfaces via SPDIF, internal clock and everything. Axe-FX, Eleven Rack, Kemper profiler, have SPDIF connection. I know that some few modelling amps have it as well. I think all of my DVD players had SPDIF but now they are history. I also believe there should be a cheap way to convert SPDIF to optical and to analog because there are tons of chinese converters out on the market.
Do you mean Fethead? Sure, since all of those inline signal boosters like the Fethead, Cloudlifter, etc. run off of phantom power, the KA2 would be able to power it.
EXTREMELY late, but to anyone reading this -- you can do something similar with Voice Meterbanana, a virtual audio-mixing software (free). You can even pair it up with hotkeys, to toggle outputs and inputs.

Come on, we need that song. Did you release it in the meanwhile?
Thanks! I haven't released it yet, but I've been thinking about re-recording a collection of these interface demo songs and putting them out. I'm bad about following through on these things though :)
@@YHRS Subscribed and waiting for that album!
Hi, thanks for the video. My question would be, how to use the midi keyboard at the same time with this sound card? Thanks
Since this interface doesn't have a 5-pin MIDI input, you'll have to use MIDI via USB. That would be either a MIDI controller that plugs directly into the computer via USB, or a MIDI to USB interface.
@@YHRS Thank you!
Hey, there's a lot of difference between de KA1 and KA2? My main doubt is if the balanced output on the KA2 is going to make a big difference.
I'm in the same situation right now, but I figured I'd rather get KA2 since I will be using it for a long time and having balanced output gives you the best sound possible without noise
Anyone else having issues getting this set-up and working with FL Studio? I have downloaded all the drivers and installed the required plugins, I can see the device appearing in FL Studios with the correct driver, but when using it I am getting no mic or instrument input and the driver status shows as 'stopped'
cool tune. good vid.
Can u make a Video on how to Set Talkback with the komplete Audio 2( with Hearing the other Person)?
Thanks for your video... Just bought Komplete Audio 2, second day I used it, LED won't light but unit works, any cues what the problem is? Use a Mac IOS 11.2.1
Hmmm, I can't say that I've run into that issue myself. You might try it on a different USB port and see if it re-detects and comes back to life. If you're using a USB hub, make sure that the hub is powered with a full 5V. That's about all I can think of, outside of a faulty unit.
@@YHRS thanks for answering, I am in touch with Native Instruments. Hoping they will help.
How can I make the notes you drew with this vocal on fl 20?
newtone?
Focusrite or komplete audio??
They're really similar interfaces, so it comes down to your preference. I'm kinda partial to the KA2 over the 2i2, but they're both great entry-level interfaces. The KA2 comes with a software bundle that's more geared towards the electronic musician, the Scarlett comes with a software bundle more geared towards DAW effects. They're both a great value, so you can't really make a bad choice :-)
How do you switch from the front headphone output to the two back output
While the default windows driver does.
looks a great little interface, you could just move round the studio. love the Floydish song , do you complete them? if so can you give a link :)
Oh absolutely, it's a lightweight and very capable little interface!
My wife and I have been having discussions about my inability to finish music projects. Typically the state that they end up in for these videos is where they stay forever. But I WANT to finish them. My wife might start cracking the whip to get that accomplished :)
are the out 1 and out 2 holes on the back for the monitors?
Correct, outputs 1 and 2 are a left/right pair that are intended to send signal to powered monitors.
And How do u recorded the whole Video so we could hear what u where doing?
Question for reference, can I hook a KA1 or 2 up to Daw like FL20 and use guitar rig having its output set to studio monitor (speakers) with 0 latency?
Im really in panic since i cant choose between focusrite 2i2 3rd gen the M audio or this pls help me
No need to panic, since they're both very good interfaces.
Your Home Recording Studio I think ill go with the ka2 since is cheaper than focusrite in my country thx so much bro 1 like !
can you use a 3.5 mm jack converter to 1/4" for output?
Would you recommend this interface over presonus iOne?
오 좋은정보 감사여 ㅎ
Great song man!
Thanks so much!
What is line what ist Instrument i just want to record some vocals on wich one do i have to Switch ist?
If you're recording vocals through a microphone into the XLR input of the KA2, then the line and instrument setting won't matter to you. Those control the input signal strength of the 1/4" inputs, and they tell the interface whether to expect a line-level signal or an instrument-level signal. That switch position won't affect how the XLR microphone input behaves.
Which one exactly cables from my keyboard to Audio Interface and with my laptop I can use for this Audio Interface ?
I really hope you know what a great song that is
Aw, thanks so much, man! I really appreciate that!
is this working without any pc?? just power support on and the audio outputs to an bluethooth loudspeaker.
You'll need to connect it to a computer in order to get power to it over USB, and in order to send any signal through it. It doesn't have any bluetooth connectivity so you'll need to connect it via the 1/4" TRS main outputs on the back to any powered speaker.
Which one easy and best recording software I can use for this Audio Interface ?
DAW software is a really subjective thing. I think that the best approach to finding the best software for you is to download the demo versions of several, and try them out for yourself. You can get a feel for their user experience and workflow and make a decision on which one you like best. Every brand (except Apple) has demo versions of their DAW available, and they're all free to try for a period of time.
Thank you
I want connect komplete audio 2 with MacBook pro how I can do that u explain for windows in this vedio
Unfortunately, I don't have a Mac to try it on. But as far as I understand, you don't need drivers or anything to get it to work on a Mac. Native Instruments has a quick start guide here: www.native-instruments.com/en/komplete-audio-2-quickstart/
The usb thing is orange by the way
Can Komplete audio 1 drive 80ohms dt 770 pro??
I wondered about the MIDI jacks as well but, in actuality, USB transmits data 15 THOUSAND times faster than MIDI anyways, so why bother? (other than for vintage keyboards/FX devices, which would not have USB ports)
Hi I was wondering do you you have the keyboard connected to the computer as well as the audio interface ? or do you connect the keyboard to the audio interface (pls help anyone )
Hello! My keyboard is USB only, so I've got it plugged directly into the computer. The audio interface is also connected to the computer via USB.
Your Home Recording Studio , thanks sooo much, also would you have to have it like that if you would play let’s say a live performance? Would you just need to plug the output from the interface to a speaker?
liked the project! Very shoegazy
I heard the Komplete audio 2 doesn’t let you hear the mic recording your speakers in real time ?
If you're talking about a "loopback" feature that'll capture the playback as inputs, then that is correct, there is no loopback feature on the KA2. The only interface in this price range that I'm aware of a loopback feature is the Steinberg UR22mkII.
is there a driver needed for mac?
Dear sir i have old laptop lenovo window 7
32 bit
4gb ram
dual core processor
This audio interface will work on laptop if not then what is that Audio Interface ?
For recording audio tracks, that computer will work fine. It doesn't take much processing power to record audio, even at pretty high sample rates.
However, that computer will struggle when it comes to mixing. Especially if you use a lot of VST effects and virtual instruments.
vocal ok? how pad? vocal and pad?
Do we need to connect midi keyboard to Audio Interface?
or Is it enough to connect it to the computer?
Woooowwwww
Thanks Mino :)
Its tiny..
Can you use a frethead with the NIA2?
Do you mean Fethead? Sure, since all of those inline signal boosters like the Fethead, Cloudlifter, etc. run off of phantom power, the KA2 would be able to power it.
Yeah I meant the Fethead. I ended up getting the 4i4 with the cloudlifter and a shure sm58. Everything sounds great.
hypothetically, could you use input 1 in a daw and input 2 in a voice chat? i have a umc22 so this is a foreign concept lol
EXTREMELY late, but to anyone reading this -- you can do something similar with Voice Meterbanana, a virtual audio-mixing software (free). You can even pair it up with hotkeys, to toggle outputs and inputs.
