not only are you a pro knitter, you're a fantastic teacher with a good moral compass. thank you Norman for advocating for ethical, mindful, consumption.
I absolutely love your message of more isn’t always more but often times it is less! I am donating my first interchangeable knitting needles (Knit Picks brand) to a school in a large metro area. There is a teacher there that has started a knit & crochet club for the kids and is always looking for donations to help encourage kids to take up the craft and provide materials for those that can’t afford it.
@@KS-bg3spI knit magic loop and was irritated by the curling of the cords that happens with Knit Picks & Knitter’s Pride traditional cords. I now have a ChiaoGoo interchangeable needle set. I love, love the cords and pointy tips. Hope that helps you!
This is a fabulous idea! I taught elementary school children to knit in a knitting club, and we made our own knitting needles and loved them. It made them more excited about knitting their projects.
My husband loves to fix stuff and has a ton of tools. Tons of tools. He asked me once to get him a screwdriver out of the screwdriver cabinet…I said “why do you need 100 screw drivers?!?!?!” And he responded, “why do you have 100 knitting needles?” Point taken! Handed him the screwdriver and have never mentioned excess tools again 😅
I’m grateful that you are aware of the influencing effect these videos may have on people and make a point to say to think about the money that you spend on the needles and do you actually need them. It’s so easy to get excited about all the things but also so important to be responsible. Love all your storage suggestions, also. I currently use a binder system for DPNs and circulars but am looking for a better alternative for my circulars.
Remember all those books we used to keepxcd's and DVD disc's in? Try had pickets for the discs,6 per page. I've repurposed mine by using them to store my circulars. I write on the plastic with a permanent marker the needle size, cord length and needle brand. It works so well(better than anything else I've tried!) And I feel good when I flip thru the pages knowing I repurposed something to a good use~!!
I inherited my Mother’s, Aunt’s, Mother-in-law’s knitting and crochet needles and yarn stashes adding to my own full collection. I was able to put together several full sets of straight needles. I always use circular or DP needles since it is earlier on my hands and shoulders. I donated the sets to schools, churches, and community centers, along with yarn. The groups were delighted for the resources and I cleared my collection of things I was never going to use. Win/Win for everyone.
Thank you Norman. I only use interchangeable circular needles and I finally landed on a system to store all the cables. I use a 30” long plastic pipe, 1” in diameter to store them in. I gather up one end of the cables and just use a twist tie to hold them together. I bought a 24” ruler decal and stuck it on the outside of the pipe so I can figure out how long the cable is when selecting one. My cables are always straight, all in one place and the tube fits neatly in my knitting drawer.
Cynthia, your solution got me thinking. I do a lot of Moebius knitting, so I have really long circulars. I could twist tie them to a hula hoop I already have, mark the hoop with a Sharpie for the different lengths, and store it behind my sofa. I'm excited to try this!
Thanks, Norman. You've given me some good ideas so that I can sew my own custom needle storage. I really don't like the plastic case mine came in. Your advice is very sensible. It took me weeks and a lot of research and review videos to decide on a set of interchangeable needles to suit my needs. I've been knitting for over 60 years and you are still teaching me new things. 💙🧶🧦
I started on inexpensive needles & my husband bought me better ones for Christmas so I passed my old ones to a charity shop. When I got faster I went over to metal needles another pressie from hubby so again passed the old ones on. The only needles I keep but don't use were passed to me from my nan but I do use the notions they came with some of which you can't get anymore. Using these makes me feel closer to her as she taught me to knit.
For those asking about straight needles, when I inherited my first set of straight needles from my grandmother, they came to me in a roll up case/pouch she had made a case for them. It is very similar to a lot of roll up makeup brush pouches i have seen.. It’s a large piece of felt (maybe 3ft/1 meter long, about 15” or a little less than 50 cm tall), with two other pieces sewn on top of it to make slots for needles. The shorter slot piece (just a little shorter than her shorter single pointed needles) was on top of the larger slot piece (again, just shorter than her longer single pointed needles), and both were sewn through the felt backing, both on the edges and for all of the vertical slots to hold the needles. The top edge folded over everything, and then the entire large pouch rolled up so that nothing would fall out. I currently have 100+ straight needles in it of 14 different sizes , and it feels about half to three-quarters full, and rolls up to a diameter of less than 6 inches/15 cm. And that pouch of light blue felt and white thread has held up for 40+ years. So for those looking for straight needle storage, this may be the trick for you!
Thank you for this Norman, I especially love your advice about not burdening ourselves with ‘more for the sake of more’. You are absolutely right, it will not make one a better knitter.
I love the hair tie idea....especially since I can't get them out of my hair!!! Yup, massively stuck!!!! Cut that sucker out!! 😂😂 Didn't know I could use the pieces. I actually keep a lot of my circular needles the original packaging & hang them on a pegboard by needle size!! Works VERY well, I consider it wall art!! And of course the interchangeable are in their respective holders. 😉 I look at more needles and think...."Do I need/want needles... Or more yarn". Sometimes it's a tough decision. I have a friend who likes fancy cigars, I snag the glass tubes for DPNs.
I love the message of “you don’t need all of this to be a good knitter” I just got my first set of interchangeable circulars for Christmas and I have been so excited to use them, but I’m still learning so I know they won’t improve my knits, they will just make the job more enjoyable as I don’t really like working in the round on DPNs, and only use them when I’ve gotten to the point that my circulars are too big even with magic loop techniques.
Wonderful recap of storage possibilities. I especially admire your suggestion to give away items that you won't use again to charities, schools, etc. Others can experience the joy of knitting and creativity. Tip--I use portable toothbrush holders to store my double point needles and crochet hooks. Label the cases. It makes for each transport on the go and all of the containers store easily in a bin or box. Happy New Year.
Thank you for making these videos. I started knitting last year and use your videos for everything. I appreciate what you do and watch your videos all the time when making socks, or reviews on needles, or even basic stitches. Keep your the great work! ❤
Great suggestions. I use the photo box for the circular needles and love it. I labeled each box for easy access. I’m going to purchase the hair ties to connect my double pointed needles. I never thought of that. I really enjoyed the video. Thank you!
Thank you, Norman. I admit I put off watching this video because my needle mess causes such anxiety and i was trying to ignore the whole subject 😅. But you have given us so many good ideas, and there are many in the comments as well. I think i can tackle the project now! I love that you show such a wide range of options. And your message at the end is perfect, and applicable to so many areas besides knitting. Appreciate you so much ❤
I have used stretch ankle socks to store my circular needles, writing the size and length on each sock in black marker. I coil up the cable and then slip it in the sock. Then I just put them in a storage box. It's super easy to find what I need because they're so clearly and boldly labeled, and the socks will stretch to accommodate any size of tips and snuggly holds the coiled circs in place. I like to buy them in bright colors, just to have a cheerful rainbow to greet me when I open the storage box! 😊
You’re a good practical influencer. I’ll give away or donate my needles that I don’t use and leave space for my favourite needles. Thank you again 👌🏽God Bless
I love your videos. I do have to say "want" is way different than "need" and I have a hard time separating the two ~ even when I sleep on it, hence all the needles and yarn I have! Thank you for all you do. someone else said it below and I totally agree, you're a great teacher with a moral compass. I too appreciate your advocating for ethical-mindful consumption.
I've been knitting about 10 years and I've found that a transparent fishing tackle box with adjustable slots works really well for most of my knitting tools.
I have a friend who still knits with straight needles. A few months ago I sent her all of my old straight needles. She was thrilled and I was able to get rid of needles I haven't used in years. I was storing my circular needles in a hanging contraption that I made from empty toilet paper tubes stapled together. A good friend of mine saw that and sewed me a beautiful hanging case similar to yours on the hanger. But mine is beautiful - made in my colors. It hangs on the wall in my craft room. All needles are visible at a glance. I have some DPN's in sturdy cardboard tubes that I've had forever and don't remember where they came from. I'm a magic looper so my DPN's don't get much use. At some point they may also be given away to someone who will love them. But for now the few that I have aren't in the way. The first few times I used a Tubular Italian Cast-on I found it easier to do on a straight needle than on circulars. So I did keep a couple of my old mis-matched straight needles in case I need one for that. You are brilliant. Thanks for another great video!.
I have those chunky 20mm needles too! A small suggestion to improve on the binder solution. You can use set of index pages (I don't know the official name of them) and sort the needles according to size. Personally I use a cardboard box from IKEA with a A5 size foot print for my circular needles. I keep them in their original bag and store them upright in the box, organized by size separating each size with card like old fashioned index cards. One box can hold atleast 20 pairs of circular needles like that.
Thanks for the tips. The three drawer solution may just change my knitting life. I have been reducing my needles for years and you have given me ideas of how to get rid of more. Thanks so much!! I Always enjoy your videos and learn something new.
I like the curly hair tie hack for dpns! Personally, I use the little twisty covered wire ties that come on bread or Bagels bags. They're handy for many things, I use them for cords also. Best of all they're free:)
Thank you Norman for giving us all tips and inspiration for needle and accessories organization and storage. Your approach, attention to details, and consistent consideration for differences in knitters is so appreciated, so much so that I’m going to your Patron page to join and support your work (which, sorry, hadn’t done til now). While watching today I realized how much I’ve benefited from your videos and guidance! ❤ thanks for a great start for 2024!
Such great advice at the end! I have been using a plastic shoe box to hold my current projects and my needles. I own my first pair of metal straight needles, a set of Knit Picks interchangeable needles for mostly worsted yarn projects, and a tiny set of Chicago needles for sock yarn projects. I have a small pouch with zippered plastic sleeves for additional sizes of needle cords, plus one metal tin (Altoids mints) to hold a few of the notions I frequently use. I pretty much have all I need here. When I started to think about getting a project bag with storage, I searched and saved items but none of them spoke to me enough to switch. I'm glad I didn't buy anything else because I think this current setup suits me fine. I keep the shoe box next to my spot on the couch where I prefer to knit and pull it out as needed. When it's not in use, I close it up and put it away. It's great.
Good video, of course. I'm glad you pointed out that we don't have to buy all the things for knitting. I love my Knitter's Pride needles and can't justify spending more money on more expensive sets. I'm not prone to quick choices based on videos I watch but I know some people are.
I recently had a lady in a yarn store tell me most people are using circular needles these days instead of straights. I need to watch your videos a few times because I am still having trouble knitting in the round. Your videos are the best.
Thank you for sharing. I use a wooden tool chest that I got here in the US at harber freight store. Has my collection well organized and is so pretty and bonus I can lock it
I use FlexiFlips a lot. I like the container they come in. I store them in a cardboard wine bottle holder, which looks like an old fashion hat box, I received as a gift. I also use toothbrush holders for double point needles which are stored in the same holder.
So in love. I use the same type of storage system for my crochet hooks and knitting needles. (New to knitting) Bamboo needles in one, plastic in another, knitters pride in another. Granted, I have no where near as many needles as you. In addition, I have an old chest of drawers where I store everything in one place. Love your channel. Vangie from TEXAS.
Jumper needles have been my favorites over the years but can no longer find them. Life temporarily prevented me knitting but after 20 years I’m happily back to my favorite hobby. Where are jumpers needles now?
17:40 I am currently using those for my crochet hooks and knitting needles! I just give each material their own shelf since I only have 2 sets of interchangeable needles (wood and stainless steel) in their original cases whereas the hooks are wood, aluminum, and resin, also in their original boxes. 1 group member in a discord I'm in did shame spew for the plastic since she uses those wood fountain pen display boxes on Amazon that cost $50-$100 each, everyone else used tin, wood, or fabric boxes while others used mugs or planters.
I never understood that kind of shaming. I mean, we all have different means but also different aesthetic preferences. I love exotic and super soft yarn but I'd never shame anyone for using arylic. What do i gain by that? Feeling superior because I own more money? Gee...that's kinda shallow and vain >.
I just finished sewing my own needle case. It is customized for what I have and use. I have gotten rid of the things I don’t like and don’t use. It’s so freeing and refreshing for the soul!
You just solved my biggest problem. I never thought to put hot water on the cable to relax it. I'm still collecting the basics. This is VERY helpful. Thank you.
I learned how to knit about 10 years ago, but I still consider myself somewhat of a beginner, because I spent a lot of time since then not knitting. I recently picked it up again and decided that I needed some new tools, but I was having a difficult time making up my mind which interchangeable set to buy. My solution was to buy individual pairs, some smaller sizes in metal and larger ones in wood. As time goes on, I should develop a better idea of what I want long term.
I almost never bought any knitting needles. When people heard I was knitting, the gave me entire collections their grandma doesn't use anymore etc. This way I had some needles more than once and gave the supernumerary ones to other knitters :) For my DPNs I sew a case (like a pencil roll) and I just keep the round needles in sandwich bags with the number on, and all those bags I keep in a bigger bag 😂 I also made a list to know which numbers I have quicker if I want so start a project! The hanger for the round needles is a great idea, though, I need to sew one of these!
I loved your sage advice at the end Norman, I have 2 sets of interchangeable needles, and various fixed circulars, but I will only buy Knit Pro because that's what works for me. I won't be buying more needles (I hope) for many years. I do hope you're well, take care xx
I inherited my former mother in law's knitting needles. They are old but still work. I'm a lifelong crocheter but I'm learning to knit. I recently purchased an inexpensive set of interchangeable needles but I'm not ready to let go of Mom's needles. Maybe some day in the future I can gift them to a new knitter.
Perfect ideas and solutions! I also decided to print out tons of my favorite photos of my children now that I'm an older to give to my children of their childhood. I didn't know about that amazing plastic storage container! I learn so much from you!! Now to also organize my needles! ❤
And now I have a reason to use my gifted sewing machine!! If I dig through 5 bags (and perhaps some wips 👀 ) looking for needles, then finding the right size (I use interchangeable sets for everything but socks…and then try and tell the difference between the 3 US 1s and 2s 🤦♀️) and always scrambling around, then getting stressed and not wanting to knit. I’m going to make one of those hanger things, even for my interchangeables (I’ll just attach them to a cord) and mark the sizes on the hanger thing. Even I could sew that!!! I really have become a knitter who just likes to do everything on circulars…and I have a few sets of DPNs (that came in a decent organizer bag) for tee-tiny things, like fingers on gloves. You’re holding the same Karbonz set that I have, and it does work pretty well…except the cords wind up…who knows where (I don’t have a lot of WIPs…maybe). A friend uses a box of hanging, expandable folders and uses the tabs to mark all of the fixed circulars, which is a good idea, but I like the idea of hanging them more so I’m not dealing with curled up cords. I don’t care about pretty…mine are in a room that isn’t on display. I like practical, inexpensive and efficient. Yes, Norman, shoe boxes are fantastic to store things in!! I like shoes, so I have shoe boxes that store lots of things!
I have a binder with plastic inserts that is gathering dust as I progressively stoped using it and now I just hang all of my circular needles on a simple hook on a shelf. It's messy but I like the ease of use. But I do sew and can easily make that organizer on the hanger so I will consider making one. Thank you for that idea.
yeah, same here. The binder sounds like a good idea and it kinda is..but it never worked for me. And sure, try it out..it's super easy to sew and really doesn't need to be fancy. Just two pieces of cloth where you sew over every 2 inches or so ^^
I looked at designs online, and adapted one for my own (rather large) collection: the result is a tall, completely hand-sewn fabric roll that I love to use and am very proud of. It took me a month to complete it, so when it came to storing my circular needles, I chickened out and used a slightly cracked and chipped ceramic cookie jar. Works perfectly.
I keep all my needles in the original packaging. Since I use ChiaoGoo Red Lace fixed needles, the original packaging is great to store the needles in , the packaging is labeled with the size of the length of the needle too. Then I keep the needles in a plastic bag that sheets came in. I have a lot of needles.
Thank you, Norman for your video. In the past years, I had decided to clean out my single point needles for an interchangeable set. I kept 1 set of single points that was given to me by someone special. Crochet hooks are cheap here in th US so I would buy the size I needed if I couldn’t find one at home. I kept the ones I liked the hook shape and gave the rest to my senior knitting group. I like the space I cleared up. Then I discovered pointier needles! Got a set of interchangeable needles. They came in a case and don’t take up much room. 😊
I have so many DPNs that I got roll up pencil cases (2 of them) designed for 72 pencils each. Has the elastic loops to hold in each pencil... I organized the DPNs from small to large, clustering multiples together in each loop, as needed, to fill them. I can easily see the different tips and lengths so I can grab what I need... They roll up into a cylinder of about 4 inches... I also got a 4 part zippered pencil case for my knit picks interchangeables. One part is for cables with them throughthe loops based on length, 2 more for the tips (3.5-5mm in one, 6mm and up in the other) and the 4th has the end stoppers, connectors, etc. Both of these were from aliexpress for quite cheap... My chiaogoo interchangeables are in their case, but it's irritating when you have cables in little baggies and shorties in their pouches in the middle...
IC needles are what I use the most and I found that I was becoming very frustrated with finding the right length cable. I ended up buying shorter binders and clear pages with a zippered opening. Each page holds a specific brand and length of cable (I have a lot of extra cables) and is labeled. The needles are kept in their original cases. Now it’s so easy to find what I need, it’s also easy to see what is missing and hidden in a forgotten WIP. I also keep my most used tools in a wicker basket that I can move around the house depending on the season. I love the tip for holding the DPN’s together. Another great video Norman!
Something I’ve found very useful with plastic test tubes, I do a lot of my knitting on the go and it’s great if I know I’ll be needing a size in an upcoming project stage to be able to just grab the tube with that size and toss in my knit bag
@@NimbleNeedlesand way less painful to unravel! You're a genius, I'll def be using hairties for everything now, I can't believe I haven't thought of that!
I'm way more excited about this video than I should be lol😂 So many great ideas here Norman,,and I'll definitely be using some of them~! I'm all about how beautiful things are in my line of sight🤷♀️ I use my yarn as interior design, and have it hanging from ceiling baskets, table top baskets and shelves etc,,all by the most appealing color combinations for the room(I know, that's maybe a bit shallow but it sure looks gorgeous! I actually get compliments on how craetively I've decorated my living room lol). As for needle storage🤦♀️! I don't have any one system, just what looks pretty, and is somewhat practical😂 I have some tube shaped cans, both metal and cardboard, that originally had bottles of Ouzo from Greece, one had a bottle of Jameson whiskey in it, etc. and they can be quite attractive. I store my different sets of straight needles in them, then have them arranged on the floor by my fireplace or on the mantle,,arranged by the bookshelf etc. Not super practical but it looks nice! Sometimes tea also comes in those same kind of decorative cans(Teavana has some gorgeous fabric covered ones!)only smaller,I use those for notions, dpns or crochet hooks then arrange them in baskets. Last but not least is all my circular sets. No real attractive way to display those, but what works for me is I've repurposed all those books that we all once stored dvd and cd discs in. Since I dont mind if my cords are curled,I store each cable in a pocket-6 pockets per page-then write in permanent marker the needle size, cord length and needle brand on it. I just flip thru the pages whenever I need a circular~!! I really like ypur idea for the photo storage containers tho~!! Anyway, sorry my comment is so long😂but this is such an exciting topic,,and rarely talked about in any kind of USEFUL way,,I love hearing your ideas and solutions as well as others who commented here~!! 🧶🥢🧶🥢 .........I'm sitting here smiling from ear to ear~!! Edit: I forgot~!! I also have some rosewood trays that go in a silverware drawer for seperating spoons from forks pol......yep~!! As a knitter I immediately saw another beautiful way to store needles and notions🤣 Wooden cigar boxes work well too,and often tobacco shops will give them away for free~!!
@@NimbleNeedles Lol,,the key word there being "detailed"😂 I got a bit carried away~! I just love finding creative ways of storing/displaying my yarn and needles, but no one I know wants to talk about it,,they all just roll their eyes at me😂 Thanks for all the effort you put into your videos Norman, and if I haven't told you already~your website is AMAZING. Your passion for knitting and attention to detail really shines,as do you~!!💎
At the moment I'm using bag clips on a scarf hanger to store my fixed circular needles but I like your solution of a sewn hanger with slots for the needles. Thanks.
My education taught me all different textile techniques, including sewing. So I was able to make my needle pouches myself. During the decades (I'm a knitter for almost 60 years now) of course it was needed to change to a different kind of needle pouch ... I got more needles, more circular needles, etc. Now my needles are organised in three types of storage: the 'traditional' straight needles with one point are in a beautifully hand-painted Chinese (or is it Japanese?) wooden needle box, the 'old-fashioned' long double-pointed needles are in a rolling-up pouch I made for them and both the short DPNs and the fixed circulars are sorted in size in a wall-hanger (I made too). And then I have a modern interchangeable set named 'Mindful', by KnitPro, that came in its own beautiful turquoisy blue pouch. Btw my thinnest needles (long DPNs) are 1 mm and my thickest needles are 1 cm (= 10 mm).
Love the denial phase!! Your timing with this video is awesome! I am analyzing my current storage and was looking for ideas. Thank you for another amazing video!
Thanks Norman! I've been meaning to donate my first straight needles and a few gift circulars I don't use. The hair elastics are genius. I have to keep my needles to a minimum because I also have crochet hooks and Tunisian crochet hooks. They all have to fit it one drawer of my craft dresser. My interchangeable needles and Tunisian crochet set have nice cases so that's easy. Crochet hooks are in a huge coffee mug (1+ litre capacity). I have 2 sets of dpns so i store them in DIY dpn cozies with the size embroidered on the outside. I also have a DIY needle book for needles, stitch holders, and progress keepers. The hanging circular needle holder your friend makes is very practical. I saw a similar ceramic holder in the shape of a skein of yarn once. Your point about plastic is well taken. One of my cases is canvas and it works perfectly. The leather ones are sooo expensive but beautiful. Not there yet ... I'd rather spend my money on yarn.
yeah, i mean..i always kinda roll my eyes (inwardly). When people see some of the knitter's pride sets in their plastic pouches they often start commenting that it looks cheap and it's plastic. And I'm typically: yeah, sure but it does the job as well!
I've given away a lot of my first needles, but the needles I can't bear to give up are my great-grandmother's needles. She knitted even when she couldn't see anymore. By that time she had been knitting for over 90 years (she lived to be 100) and didn't really need to see what she was doing. That said, they are nothing of heirloom quality (they're Boye). Like you, I haven't knitted on straights in years and years, but I still have Granny's needles taking up space in my drawer.
I'd keep them as well. Some mementos are important. I still have a couple of the socks my grandma knitted me. I can't wear them anymore (they are that threadbare) but they'll continue to live in my sock drawer!
i have my small collection of dpns in an empty cardboard container that had incense sticks in. it's the perfect length but also a snug enough fit for the needles, so they won't rattle all the time - which i was actually able to completely eliminate by folding some corrugated paper (from some other packaging, so it's practically 100% no-glue upcycling) inside, which even creates little compartments for each small set (3x size 4, 5x size 3.5, 4x size 3 & 2x size 2)! and the nice smell is an added bonus of course 😊
my circular needles are an equally small amount and i got some good inspiration from this video, but also want to expand on it more urgently too so i'm unsure if it's effective to put a lot of mental effort into finding the perfect organisation for them yet... thanks for the nice video though ❤
Thank you Norman. You gave us a lot of information in a logical, understandable way. I have the cloth hanging organizer for circular needles and it's worked very well for me over the years. I recommend that for sure. I love your idea of using boxes for the small items and accessories. I will begin that next. Cheers!
I find nyself often buying new knitting needles when on a trip - to remind myself of the trip and the wool/project I knit with them while traveling . But these "special" needles are kept in special bags which don't bother me so far.😅 Thank you so much. for sharing your systems!
Thanks for all the tips, (especially about not needing the newest needles every year)! I am always looking for better ways to store my needles and notions and I like the idea of the small plastic boxes. I inherited my grandfather's needles, (mainly straights which I don't use a lot) and you have inspired me to organize them better. Thanks!
Great video. I see through nylon pouches at my local dollar store. They are great for keeping my needles organized when travelling. I have also been using old telephone coil cords to keep appliance cables neatly organized. I am glad to hear that I can find coils in hair products to store my knitting needles. Thanks for the tips.
Norman I love your videos and I have a great suggestion: could you please make left handed videos all you have to do is re upload your videos but mirror them you are a great teacher but it is hard for me too follow along so yeah anyway keep making great videos! Bye 👋
Hi Norman. Wonderful video! Knitting needle storage is the bane of my existence! Thank you for so many worthwhile solutions. I did see one podcaster use a metal skirt hanger to store fixed circulars. I may use that for my fixed as i have so many and have to constantly dig to find them. I love the neat way you store your interchangeables and notions. All great ideas which I hope to incorporate this year as I sort through my guest bedroom aka yarn room. Your advice at the end is spot on. Time to donate the needles i will never use again and to reel myself in when purchasing more needles. Thanks Norman!🤗🤗
Thank you for this video. This was a much-needed and well-placed kick in the behind for me. Just ordered some linen organizers from Etsy…always happy to support small makers on that site. Thanks again!
I can't believe I threw away a valuable organising tool when my hairband broke recently! 😳 What a great idea to use them for organising knitting needles!❤
A great coincidence as I was just about to go through knitting needles etc as part of an all round declutter. Very helpful tips and advice thank you. I love the hanging storage your friend made for circular needles. A great idea to have them easily to hand and stop them getting too curly.
well, let's just say I did time this video for the new year for a reason *Grin* But yeah, letting them hang is good...some people here also advises to use super long tubes.
Great tips and advice as always. I use the manufacturer needle case for my one and only set of interchangeable needles. For all my other bits of paraphernalia i found a leather binder with zipper closure plastic envelopes which corrals everything else (stitch markers, counters, cable needles, crochet hooks, dpn's.......) absolutely everything i need at this time. So everything i have needed for the last few years fits neatly into these 2 cases, just add yarn.
yeah, I do believe these interchangeable knitting needle pouches are quite awesome and there's little else you need. Glad you found a system that work sso well for you :)
To avoid having to page through the binder for a specific circular needle, one can affix labeled sequenced tabs to the page edges and quickly locate the desired needle. For a non-plastic drawer system such as pictured, one can look at the metal shallow drawer units in fun colors that Poppin and Container Store sell. 🟢Norman, dark colors look great on you! Glowing up your skin tone, good for your "season", and this combo is fantastic - the beautiful dark sweater and vibrant scarf/shawl. Now I want to knit this red white and black beauty, but I have nowhere near the skill required. I am confident that I keep following you, I will get there!🟢

I've been using Knit Pic interchangeable and circulars for several years. I love them all. @@KS-bg3sp
This is a fabulous idea! I taught elementary school children to knit in a knitting club, and we made our own knitting needles and loved them. It made them more excited about knitting their projects.
"Still in denial phase" 😂 I feel this in my soul, Norman!
honesty where honesty is required😂
@@NimbleNeedles 🤣🤣
My husband loves to fix stuff and has a ton of tools. Tons of tools. He asked me once to get him a screwdriver out of the screwdriver cabinet…I said “why do you need 100 screw drivers?!?!?!” And he responded, “why do you have 100 knitting needles?” Point taken! Handed him the screwdriver and have never mentioned excess tools again 😅
Just love the idea of using hairbands. Absolutely genius 😊
Right?!
I love that you advice a new knitter to concentrate on practicing and that more expensive doesn’t always translates to better. Love your video. 💖
I’m grateful that you are aware of the influencing effect these videos may have on people and make a point to say to think about the money that you spend on the needles and do you actually need them. It’s so easy to get excited about all the things but also so important to be responsible.
Love all your storage suggestions, also. I currently use a binder system for DPNs and circulars but am looking for a better alternative for my circulars.
yeah, over consumption is a vice and the knitting world is..let's say...we could do with a bit less shoping :P
Win/Win for everyone.
yes, exactly. I know quite a couple of teachers and my family is also very active in craft schools and yes, they really appreciate these donations!
My cables are always straight, all in one place and the tube fits neatly in my knitting drawer.
that's also a super neat trick. Thx for adding it.
Cynthia, your solution got me thinking. I do a lot of Moebius knitting, so I have really long circulars. I could twist tie them to a hula hoop I already have, mark the hoop with a Sharpie for the different lengths, and store it behind my sofa. I'm excited to try this!
@@shaynaformity1384. Brilliant!
Thanks. Getting PVC
Glad it was helpful!
I love your channel and the way you deliver . You are such a loving, gentle being . How not to love You Norman .
So for those looking for straight needle storage, this may be the trick for you!
awesome tip. thx for adding it!
I look at more needles and think...."Do I need/want needles... Or more yarn". Sometimes it's a tough decision.
I have a friend who likes fancy cigars, I snag the glass tubes for DPNs.
that's a good tip! i think vanilla pod tubes might also work?
Happy New Year.
oh, i like that idea! thx for sharing.
I like your scarf/shawl. Very nice.
Thank you! 😊 Still need to publish the pattern...heh.. :P
Thank you for making these videos. I started knitting last year and use your videos for everything. I appreciate what you do and watch your videos all the time when making socks, or reviews on needles, or even basic stitches.
Keep your the great work! ❤
Thank you so much!
Great suggestions. I use the photo box for the circular needles and love it. I labeled each box for easy access. I’m going to purchase the hair ties to connect my double pointed needles. I never thought of that. I really enjoyed the video. Thank you!
they do work like a charm!
What a beautiful wrap. Absolutely gorgeous, Norman.
your collection is lavish 😍! Those needles and how you organized them are just eye candies to a knitter 😍😍!
Welcome to America 🇺🇸. Glad you are enjoying the weather here.
Not sure about this comment?
When I saw knitting needles below 1mm I got so excited i love super thin needles I love a good challenging lace.
Me too!!
Thanks for the tips. The three drawer solution may just change my knitting life. I have been reducing my needles for years and you have given me ideas of how to get rid of more.
Thanks so much!!
I Always enjoy your videos and learn something new.
You are so welcome!
I like the curly hair tie hack for dpns!
Personally, I use the little twisty covered wire ties that come on bread or Bagels bags. They're handy for many things, I use them for cords also. Best of all they're free:)
yeah, I always save these as well - tho I typically only use them in the kitchen. No idea why, lol!
So nice of you
Such great advice at the end!
I like the 3 ring binder idea to hold circular knitting needles is great! Thank you
I’m so impressed with your videos and words of wisdom!
Your scarf is absolutely gorgeous! I would love to see it fully spread out.
Has my collection well organized and is so pretty and bonus I can lock it
Hmmm, interesting i might have to look for that. I'm looking for storage ideas to keep my soon-to-be toddler from getting into my sharp needles!
I use FlexiFlips a lot. I like the container they come in. I store them in a cardboard wine bottle holder, which looks like an old fashion hat box, I received as a gift. I also use toothbrush holders for double point needles which are stored in the same holder.
I said yo myself, no more sets but then I tried the Mindful needles. I added a set and I love them.
I dunno...veeeery few ppl knit with them these days because they are kinda cumbersome and heavy 🤷
You can use interchangeable circulars. Buy extra cords and put a stopper on an end but don't connect both needles to one cord. Works exactly the same.
Love your needle sorting system. World have never thought of hair ties or key chain thing for holding needles together.
give it a try, I think they are just amazong!
It’s so freeing and refreshing for the soul!
it sure is!
Norman Norman Norman! First yarn then this 🤣 love your podcasts!
Happy to hear that 🥰
You just solved my biggest problem. I never thought to put hot water on the cable to relax it. I'm still collecting the basics. This is VERY helpful. Thank you.
but be careful, only on the cables...not your hands or the joins (the glue can disolve)
Thank you Norman for the wise words you shared in this video. I’m going to give some of my needles away. 😘
I learned to keep my crochet hooks, dpn's, & cable needles in a 3" D binder. They all are encased in zippered pencil pouches.
Thank goodness for Amazon! I relay on them for next day delivery of needles.
Happy New Year ! Norman, you are the king of organizers. What a nice shawl, is it your own design ?
yes, it is (but not yet published). Happy new year, nicole!
OMGosh!!! That hair tie hack was brilliant!! ❤
I think you should pass a set on to a poor sister who is still using straight metal needles from my Nanas collection from the 50's 😊❤❤
haha..well...tho some of these old needles can be very excellent. You know how they say they don't produce that kind of quality anymore.
Perfect ideas and solutions! I also decided to print out tons of my favorite photos of my children now that I'm an older to give to my children of their childhood. I didn't know about that amazing plastic storage container! I learn so much from you!! Now to also organize my needles! ❤
yeah, I mean they sure can be used for the original purpose as well *grin*
Works perfectly.
haha...I started reading your comment going all "ah...oh...ah..oh..amazing..." but then ..what a turn around jill!
I believe very strongly in re-using and repurposing as much as I can.
@@ReallyJillRogoff yes Jill! So do I. 😊
I use an accordion folder. Each pocket is for the different numbers.
yeah, that can work as well!
Thank you for your good advice. I’m in the process of declutterring and will certainly sort out my needles. Robyn from Australia
I love this advice! I’m inspired now to clean out and organize my needles
heh! well, let me know how it went :)
My chiaogoo interchangeables are in their case, but it's irritating when you have cables in little baggies and shorties in their pouches in the middle...
yeah, those work really well. However, I own probably 30 or 50 pairs of 2mm knitting needles alone ^^
@@NimbleNeedles yep... Me too... And like 8 sets each of everything up to 6mm...
Something I’ve found very useful with plastic test tubes, I do a lot of my knitting on the go and it’s great if I know I’ll be needing a size in an upcoming project stage to be able to just grab the tube with that size and toss in my knit bag
yeah, tubes are great! thx for sharing. I didn't think of test tubes (as you saw I am using different ones).
Hair bands...great idea! Thanks
heh. no problem! It was a kind of eureka momet for me as well. And they work soo much better than plain old rubber bands.
@@NimbleNeedlesand way less painful to unravel! You're a genius, I'll def be using hairties for everything now, I can't believe I haven't thought of that!
Incredibly detailed and helpful
Loved your message so, yes things just take up space if your not using them
I'm way more excited about this video than I should be lol😂 So many great ideas here Norman,,and I'll definitely be using some of them~!
.........I'm sitting here smiling from ear to ear~!!
Edit: I forgot~!! I also have some rosewood trays that go in a silverware drawer for seperating spoons from forks pol......yep~!! As a knitter I immediately saw another beautiful way to store needles and notions🤣 Wooden cigar boxes work well too,and often tobacco shops will give them away for free~!!
thank you for adding all these detailed ideas, vivienna
@@NimbleNeedles Lol,,the key word there being "detailed"😂 I got a bit carried away~! I just love finding creative ways of storing/displaying my yarn and needles, but no one I know wants to talk about it,,they all just roll their eyes at me😂
Thanks for all the effort you put into your videos Norman, and if I haven't told you already~your website is AMAZING. Your passion for knitting and attention to detail really shines,as do you~!!💎
At the moment I'm using bag clips on a scarf hanger to store my fixed circular needles but I like your solution of a sewn hanger with slots for the needles. Thanks.
Thanks for this podcast. Very good timing, very interesting. Kindly
1 cm...i don't think i have such big dpns. Guess I never saw the need, lol. But i do have....probably 50 different 2.0mm needles :P haha.
Love the denial phase!! Your timing with this video is awesome! I am analyzing my current storage and was looking for ideas. Thank you for another amazing video!
You had some really good storage ideas, thank you.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, Norman! ❤
Wow you have alot of knitting needles 🪡, I'm just upgrading my cheep needles slowly to knitpro atm.
Will be watching how you store your yarn. Haha 😊
That sounds lovely!
Thank you Norman. You gave us a lot of information in a logical, understandable way. I have the cloth hanging organizer for circular needles and it's worked very well for me over the years. I recommend that for sure. I love your idea of using boxes for the small items and accessories. I will begin that next. Cheers!
Very interesting Norman. Short, smart and constructive! Down to earth tips and comments. Happy new year!
Happy new year!
I find nyself often buying new knitting needles when on a trip - to remind myself of the trip and the wool/project I knit with them while traveling . But these "special" needles are kept in special bags which don't bother me so far.😅
Thank you so much. for sharing your systems!
Thanks for the tips.
yeah. I mean, I can only speak for europe but here these are very common. Might even find them at a dollar store or temu.
Norman I love your videos and I have a great suggestion: could you please make left handed videos all you have to do is re upload your videos but mirror them you are a great teacher but it is hard for me too follow along so yeah anyway keep making great videos! Bye 👋
There are programs that can do that for you. A true video for lefties is more than just mirroring
Thanks Norman!🤗🤗
my pleasure, thea...and Happy new Year 2024. May it be less burdensome (for both of us!)
Thank you Norman. Happy New Year to you as well. Let’s hope so! 😊
I followed your tips and they worked beautifully!! Thank you
To avoid having to page through the binder for a specific circular needle, one can affix labeled sequenced tabs to the page edges and quickly locate the desired needle. I am confident that I keep following you, I will get there!🟢
haha..glowing up! Well..I always say I don't get a tan but I get less pale, lol!
I was happy with my plastic sleeves in a binder…till I see all these good ideas. Ah, well. The playing is the fun of
it. Thanks for the inspiration.
but please, don't change a system that works for you and you enjoy.
