I really appreciate the fact that you mention the importance of lyrics in Sonic music. A lot of people just brush it off as "cliche" or "too optimistic", but one thing I love about being a Sonic fan for over 30 years, is that I've always been looking at this cool dude just telling me that I'm great, that I can do it, that I can always BE better. It's something that just stays with you a lot. I listened to Endless Possibilities a lot when I was in college and I was kinda lost and confused, but hearing this song telling me that I can accomplish great things, that I just have to keep going, keep pushing and I'll reach my dreams, that stays with you for a long time. Thanks for this nice trip down memory lane~
I never liked that argument because there are many Sonic lyrical tracks that aren't optimistic at all. This Machine I Am... All of Me Waking Up Dreams of An Absolution
@@williamholtzclaw3029 True but I don't think it's truly what people mean when they say optimistic, they most likely mean just mean fast paced and upbeat.

Mario and Sonic at the Olympic games. The games were made by Sega, so they've had a bunch of sonic series composers do remixes of Mario tracks like koopa's road from Mario 64 @@silverwind3766

Supporting Me is such an important song within its context. This is the moment where Shadow has decided to do the right thing, save the planet, and he knows that Maria is "supporting me." "I'll be losing you, now" is Shadow saying that he knows that when this is done, he'll be losing her for real, that he'll have no quest for vengeance left to hold in her memory. The piece is simple, but the muffled lyrics and persistent, jagged beat definitely speak to the emotions he's trying to keep down, and the tension that comes with this difficult choice. The boss fight is a vehicle for this - he's literally fighting a dark mirror of himself, the ultimate life form that *would* have been. An ultimate lifeform fuelled by rage and destruction.
I know, the moment Marco said something anything but positive I felt reallly bummed about it 😅 it's such a vibey bit of music and fits in thematically really well
Ehhh I love Sonic and don't really like Mario all that much but Supporting me kinda loses to nearly every other song in the Sonic franchise. Not surprised he gave Mario that dub.
I'd consider Solaris Phase 2 (His World - Sonic 06), Perfect Dark Gaia (Endless Possibility - Sonic Unleashed), and Nega-Wisp Phase 2 (Reach for the Stars - Sonic Colors) as a trilogy of songs in the Sonic franchise, where each following song builds on the foundation of the previous song. In a way, they kind of all sound a like, which I don't think carries over to other Sonic songs that came out before and after.
BRO, credits of Mario Kart DS actually made me tear up as a kid, and even now as an adult. Such a somber, soft tune really is so rewarding to hear after “beating” the game. W fucking mod man, great taste lmao.
I'm ride or die with the Sonic series and it's endless musical variety and aesthetic, so by bias will always be there. That said there's so much incredible music that comes from Mario that can't be overlooked either. I adore the entire ost of Super Mario Odyssey and the Mario Kart series, especially. The staff roll song from Mario Kart 64 is an especially beautiful piece that I can't recommend enough if you haven't heard it.
Nintendo music was catchy before, but it wasn't until the Wii when they really started investing into the production value with the likes of Mario Galaxy for some games. Wii U and 3DS is when Nintendo really started to knock it out of the park with it.
Except in the lyrical department. Don't get me wrong, Jump Up Super Star and Lead the Way are bangers, but what the f*ck are they supposed to do aganist the likes of What I'm Made Of, Undefeatable, This Machine and Break Through It All
Supporting Me really only hits hard if you study Shadow's story and themes down to the molecular level and have played the boss battle it shows up in.... or if you really dig experimental electronic. I happen to be in both camps.
@@Neo-Metal17 I always loved the track, it was so badass. Shame he's not crazy about it. Means I'll have to break the spaghetti next time I cook it (I always do that, but now I have said I will do that).
Endless Possibilities is one of my favourite Sonic songs to sing. The lyrics are so uplifting which helps me through my depressive episodes. I’m a bit of a metalhead so I love adding a bit of back and forth growl to the “werehog” part of the song. By that I mean I’ll alternate between distorted and clean vocals depending on the line in the bridge. Just something I do whenever I sing the song. Also, fun fact: I don’t know if the whole band was involved but the singer for Endless Possibilities is Jaret Reddick from Bowling For Soup if you know that band
Mario was lucky to even be in the competition with Sonic refraining from some real bangers like live and learn, his world, any of the metal Sonic themes, open your heart, the Egg Dragoon theme, Westopolis, What I’m made of, and any of the titan battle themes in Sonic frontiers.
That might be because every aspect of this game was played very "safe". It's a solid title which is a heavy downfall from the Galaxy games. I, too, consider this game as ... *fine* at best, including it's music.
@@TicTacToeCraft That is a bold taste in my book but it all comes down to preference, of course. I haven't encountered anything in SM3DW that I would consider very good. It's the most forgettable 3D Mario by a long shot. Odyssey was a much needed follow up and I hioe thst the next Mario will follow Odyssey's or Galaxy's formula.
@RaK0 Well, I think 3D World has some of the best moment-to-moment gameplay in the series, especially in multiplayer. Anyway, you find 3D Land less forgettable than 3D World?
Ah man, bummer that you weren't vibing with Supporting Me. On a bad day that song is in my top 3 from Sonic Adventure 2, and on a good day it's my favourite song in the game, and one of my favourites from the entire franchise. You are right though - the song is so so much more impactful in context and when you understand Shadow's character arc over the course of SA2 and his relation to the Biolizard, it's really a great song for the turning point of his character as he faces off against not only the Biolizard but also his inner demons and turmoil. I can totally get why someone might not vibe with it on a casual listen since it's super experimental but I love the muted vocals and this almost ethereal like quality it has with the whole fading in and out it does, it really highlights the inner turmoil Shadow is feeling, having had his whole line of thinking turned on its head mere moments before this. Plus that guitar riff just kicks ass man, plain and simple.
This was a lot of fun to watch, i think the track selection was really good and the added suspense of a 3-3 tie was fun. I was a bit surprised when arid sands night beat cloudy court galaxy, but if mario's jumping off a ring to ambush Marco for losing, i can only imagine what the doom slayer would do in the animal crossing vs doom video.
@SonicTheHedgehogX15 Good question. If we go by who created the soundtracks, it was the SEGA Sound Team (Tomoya Ohtani, Jun Senoue, Kenichi Tokoi, Naofumi Hataya and so on), making them Sonic music (except for the Mario remixes; those are more difficult to categorize). The funny thing is-the Sonic Heardle only features the Sonic remixes from Mario & Sonic games, while the Mario Heardle recently added some original themes from the games.
I believe Mario deserves his own music review video like Sonic has 🙂↕️ There are way stronger tracks than the ones that were picked for this duel (especially on the side of the RPGs)
@@dantefredul6326No I mean don't get me wrong, Gusty gardens is a masterpiece i'm speaking of the ones previous to it, could have worded it better though 🐢
Someone has probably said this but Vivian in TTYD was a boss alongside her 2 older Sisters, the oldest Beldam being absuive towards her. Later on when Mario has lost his identity, Vivian helps him and once she finds out who she is helping, she decides to defect and join Mario's party. This theme plays once you get to be with her one on one.
Third time recommending E-102γ's theme from Sonic Adventure 1. I've already gone on about how much I love it in my previous comments, so I'll just say here to please listen to it. It's genuinely an amazing song.
I love your channel!!! It’s family friendly, educational, and entertaining! Some people don’t understand that how much music fills the game or any other form of entertainment
I feel like it depends on what piece you put against each other which will win. Both series have rich histories with tons of amazing music to draw from. The thing is, music from Sonic and Mario serve completely different purposes in setting the atmosphere. It's an apples to oranges comparison. It's like trying to compare Thelonius Monk and say, Tchaikovsky. I like both of them but they're taking utterly different approaches to music. Anyway, interesting commentary on the pieces that were chosen for you (i thought you said they were chosen for you). Have s good one
So glad you listened to Rusty Ruins from 3D Blast Saturn! Was my first video game I got in a duel pack along with Sonic R when I was 5. Also the super mario galaxy OSTs are amazing! And you even checked out Thousand-Year Door, which is my favorite game!!
I remember I drove that Level in the clouds in Mario Kart 8 over and over again, just to hear the gusty garden galaxy theme. Its such a good piece of music
The thing that blows me away about any Shadow songs involving Heigo Tani in SA2 is the drum and sound sequencing as well as the audio experimentation, like the treatment of the vocal sample at the end. because i'm pretty much a mixer at this point, it's a lot of inspo
Its not Mario vs Sonic at the Olympics but its close enough, lol I think my only critique for this one wouldd be the tonal match up of some boss themes vs. . .normal Mario level themes and vice versa. Felt abit out of place - otherwise this was interesting, plenty of new songs for my playlist (or just to listen too again)
Endless possibilities is probably my favourite song ever. I love how upbeat and positive it is and when you beat unleashed and soak in the journey you had, the credits + that song just hits different
This was so fun! The back and forth was such a fun way to look at these songs, and the Mario tracks were really fantastic! Endless Possibilities is a very important song to me, it's the song I use to remind myself to keep striving, and the vocalist is the lead singer from Bowling for Soup, so that's fun, lol!
I'm so glad Arid Sands Night got a deep analysis, by far the best track of Unleashed. Never thought how well the visuals of the rooftop run day level would fit Endless Possibilities though, it's interesting.
1:02:11 I was expecting you to say something like "the real winner is Crash Bandicoot". The matchup I wanna see is Final Fantasy vs Fire Emblem. That'd be fun.
Nooo not biolizard not being favored by Marco that's one of my favorite sonic tracks 😭😭😭 I'd love to see another sonic vs Mario music battle. Or even one with other series that rival each other in a sense. Like ratchet and clank vs Jak and daxter
Tbh I don't like the concept of this series comparing pieces that are going for completely different things. I think it is great that you acknowledge that these pieces cannot be truly be compared and that the focus really isn't on "winning" or "losing". I like to think this series much more as a collaboration between two series instead of a competition, it's what this video comes across as more despite the "Vs" in the title.
I think it's just a fun small competition because you can't really determine which is better either way since certain tracks could be going against a track that's not the same quality even if they are the same type of piece. The only real way you'd be able to determine which is better is if every single Mario track went against every single Sonic track each, and that's ignoring the fact that music is subjective.
I see your point. But it’s just the gimmick. Ultimately we’re just talking about music for its own merit. It’s just a packaging. I know you’re not vibing with the concept but it’s not that deep from my perspective it’s just for fun.
I really enjoyed this video, particularly the pairings of these songs in each round! I like that you had both pairings were both songs were similar and also pairings were both were very different, cause I think a lot of the fun in comparative comes when you have to compare unlike things because the compulsion to compare like things is more intuitive!
Mario is the king of melody. Most songs have delightful tunes that get stuck in my head for ages. The songs are short. They are simple. But man, are they memorable. You can listen to them for long periods of time and not get bored. Meanwhile Sonic is the king of energy. Most Sonic songs fill me with this energetic feeling that make me wanna get up and get moving. The songs are fairly long and get more complex as they continue. They build over time. It's hard to hear a Sonic song and not get pumped up. I think where Mario falls flat in a competitive sense, is song length. Mario will have outstanding ideas in its music, but the loops are commonly very short. Compared to Sonic, which keeps building and building. When you think it's over, it's not! There's still more! Mario songs don't _need_ to be longer. They don't _need_ to build more. But it definitely makes Sonic sound more impressive. Of course, another avenue where Sonic just completely outclasses Mario is in terms of its vocal tracks. Mario only has a few, while Sonic has hours and hours of very varied tracks. Variety is another big factor here. Both series have loads of variety, but I think it's more apparent with Sonic. A lot of Mario games tend to have pretty similar musical styles; some of which feel fairly simple or plain in comparison. But I think where Mario really shines is with music in its spin-offs. Each game has its own flair. It's own unique vibe. And they're fascinating. I was ecstatic that a Paper Mario song made the list. Modern Paper Mario's wacky rock is probably my current favorite Mario music genre. Both Mario & Sonic have things to love about them. And we truly _are_ the winners here, being able to listen to both of these series' incredible musical legacies. EDIT: Someone in the replies said I was downplaying Sonic melodies, and I definitely was. I still think Mario is better in that regard overall, but I shouldn't be overlooking all the fantastic melodies from across the series' history. When I think of Sonic, I think of energy. When I think of Mario, I think melody. But both series excel at both avenues.
Yeah, Mario music tends to be on the shorter side by looping about every minute and 10 seconds or so (on average), but I think you know that modern Mario RPGs actually have loops that are comparable to Sonic in length.
@AsecasJavi Actually, yeah, you're right. I think Mario generally and consistently has really fantastic melodies, but the same can be said for Sonic. Especially in the classic games. I guess when I think of Sonic, I think of songs like Tropical Resort. In which the melody is catchy, but the focus is more on the slow build up throughout the song. But to ignore all the Sonic songs that highlight really strong, ongoing melodies is a bit careless of me. Classic Sonic especially has very strong, prominent tunes that are just as good, if not better than a lot of Mario's.
I generally enjoy Mario and Sonic music in different contexts. I think Mario's music is stronger in game but outside the games it's almost always the Sonic music I'd rather be listening to.
I have to say that i personally feel like sonic music has a bit more edge (no pun intended) to it in general While Mario is consistent with beautiful melodies and masterfully setting the mood and even defining tropes for years to come, Sonic sets out to be unique and use music as a tool to tell the story, i also feel like sonic takes more risks in going out of the box. Funny enough, mario spin-offs have some of my prefered OST from the series because i feel like they take more risks (stuff like Paper Mario, Mario RPG and Mario & Luigi) Anyway, amazing track selecion and i am waiting for you to hear more megaman music, you get some many of them wrong in the quizes you need a crash course ):
It might be asking too much of the mods but I think it would have been interesting to have a round for the Sonic track that would be most at home in a Mario game and a Mario track that would be most at home in a Sonic game. Honeylune Ridge: Escape from Mario Odyssey stands out as appropriate choice for the Mario track, but I'm not sure what the best Sonic track would be.
"Break Free (Lead the Way)" is basically Mario's equivalent to "It Doesn't Matter" from Sonic Adventure. A good potion of music from Lost World would fit a Mario game nicely.
@@KeltkeGH I do wonder if the relative lack of visibility for Break Free (Lead the Way)/Honeylune Ridge: Escape is that it's been known by two different titles. I'll start calling it Break Free (Lead the Way) though because it does look like that's what the Nintendo Music app calls it.
Candy's Theme from DK Jungle Climber sounds straight up like Sonic CD music. There even is a SiIvagunner rip that turns it into Stardust Speedway (Bad Future) from the Japanese Sonic CD OST. (Although, not everyone considers Donkey Kong music as Mario music, I get that.)
@matheusmunizduarte Midnight Owl gives me more Professor Layton vibes (even though I never played a game in the series), but I'll admit it's very similar to "Grifty the Traveling Minstrel" from TTYD (which is new to the remake).
Huh, this sure was a unique selection of tracks. The Sonic side of things I have no complaints about, but as an avid fan of both series; the Mario selection was quite lacking in my opinion. There are so MANY good Mario tracks, and some have some incredibly stanky big-band stuff as well, so I wish that would’ve gotten thrown in there too, especially since Arid Nights got you going! If you haven’t heard it already, I can warmly recommend Super Mario 3D World’s and Paper Mario Color Splash’s soundtracks, for examples!
Yeah, Cloudy Court's good. Very good actually. But in terms of trying to have both songs each round have the same/similar vibes, 3D World would've been a better game to pick from. GOATed soundtrack. Granted, Arid Sands Night is hard to beat no matter what, but still. Also, making a mere castle theme go up against Nega-Wisp Armor - Phase 2 was cruel! It's not a bad castle theme, by any means, but come ooooon! Let's not pretend here, man. It's such an obvious wash. Don't gemme wrong, I prefer Sonic music entirely, but some of these choices don't showcase what Mario has to offer. Just 'cause I prefer one doesn't mean I don't like the other. Doesn't take away the fact that Mario's best is really good.
When Arid Sands (Night) showed up, I expected a sax theme from the Mario franchise, since there are a lot to consider. Definitely not Cloudy Court Galaxy.
@@just1randomguy658 It's not even the best castle theme in the franchise, not the best version of it and very compressed unlike Nega-Wisp Armor - Phase 2. Yeah, I don't think this was fair.
@@just1randomguy658absolutely agree on the nega wisp vs castle theme. I feel like bowsers final battle from galaxy would've been a much more fair comparison.
25:33 Other notable examples of instruments portraying animals: "Carnival of the Animals" by Camille Saint-Saëns; "Peter and the Wolf" by Sergei Prokofiev; "Jurassic Park OST", "Jaws OST", etc... by John Williams
Personally I’d like to see Ace Attorney versus either Danganronpa or Professor Layton, Legend of Zelda versus Metroid, Doom versus Halo, Pokémon versus Kingdom Hearts, Castlevania versus Metal Gear, Ace Combat versus Star Fox, Dragon Quest versus Final Fantasy, Guilty Gear versus BlazBlue, Kirby versus Soulsborne, Donkey Kong versus Banjo-Kazooie, Mega Man versus Contra, Fire Emblem versus Persona, Xenoblade versus either Ys or Trails, and some combination of Street Fighter, Tekken, Killer Instinct and Fatal Fury/King of Fighters.
11:55 Sonic 3D Blast Saturn's OST is IMO a WONDERFUL example of "variations on a theme"! The title screen gives you the basic melody motif, then almost every track in the game is a variation of that melody. And it allllll is great!
Not having a single boss theme from Mario in this was criminal especially considering it would’ve made sense to compare them with the two Sonic boss themes. Was 100% expecting something like Fury Bowser’s theme or In the Finale to show up in this so was disappointed when neither showed up. Also, maybe it’s just me but the “tie breaker” (although I wouldn’t really consider it a tie breaker considering you just did the one Sonic song and gave Sonic the point) felt kinda forced because of my reasons above. Hopefully a dedicated Mario video is planned because there’s a lot of great Mario music out there that just wasn’t included in this
@TeknoThom Idk, I thought the picks were fine. The only thing that bugged me was that the compressed NSMBDS Castle Theme was compared to an epic orchestral final boss theme. Steam Gardens and Cloudy Court Galaxy are obvious fan favorites; the Mario Kart DS staff roll is very nostalgic for some people, and with Vivian's theme, you even have music from the more obscure Mario RPGs (which I always approve of). From the Sonic side of things, I was missing 2D Sonic (Sonic 3D Blast doesn't count, for obvious reasons).
I agree with everything you said except for the tie breaker thing, bruh did you forgot round 6, free mario point, no sonic song in there anyway this "competition" was more like an appreciation of the wonderful soundtrack of both franchises, so let's hope that Mario has his spotlight on this channel
I'm so glad you listened to Vivian's theme! Paper Mario as a whole has fantastic music, but that might manage to be my favourite track out of all of the games.
Btw, the reason Endless Possibility sounds so much like a 2000’s punk rock song (despite being made in 2008 obviously) is that it was made by Bowling For Soup!
Something really interesting to me, like a crazy coincidence, both of the tracks for round 1 I had heard before, but didn't know where they came from, and I'm pretty sure I've heard both as background music in Emplemon's long form content
Not giving supporting me a point is foul but understandable. It’s definitely one of those songs that need context, the lyrics really give it a sense of dread.
Paper Mario soundtracks are amazing. The first three games each have a very unique style to them, and the modern Paper Mario games (since Sticker Star) are a wild genre blend. They excel in basically every genre they take on and sometimes create very interesting fusions (like Snifit City from The Origami King).
@@TicTacToeCraft As much as i hate Sticker stars much or more than the next guy, it has some banger like the kamek battle theme, or the snow world theme, also Color Splash ost deserves more credit for having a battle theme that never get's borring..
On average Sonic has better music, but we have to admit, at Gusty Garden humanity's not just gaming music, but music history in general peaked. Impossible to say if it's gonna be ever surpassed, but currently, there's just nothing above it.
Putting "Endless Possibility" against "Gusty Garden Galaxy" was ballsy. Honestly at that point it could have gone either way and I'd been satisfied, and I'm saying this as asomeone whose favorite Sonic song just so happens to be "Endless Possibility".
"00s punk rock" is exactly on point for Endless Possibility, as it is written and performed by Jaret Reddick of Bowling For Soup, the same band that did the Phineas and Ferb opening.
a really cool thing about endless possibilites, is taht the music in some shape or form also reflects the words of the devs at that time, coming after the bomb that was sonic 06, sonic unleashed came to show they can still do it that for sonic there is endless possibilites.
As a huge Sonic and Mario fan(more Sonic), I love both these franchises music. Super Mario Galaxy and Sonic Frontiers are still two of my favorite game soundtracks ever.
The original NSMB castle theme is already a bit obscure now from the game's age and negative perception of NSMB as a series over the years but even more obscure is that Fortune Street for the Wii had an official higher quality version of the NSMB castle theme! Interesting you like Reach for the Stars! I honestly realized over the years I never particularly enjoyed Reach for the Stars and only liked Nega-Wisp.
Man you know the fight is fierce when even the referee gets in it, that aerial was desperate 😂 I can only imagine Crash doing an unspeakable move banned in 183 countries
Cool video! Sonic and Mario are some of my favorite games, also i've seen it mentioned but I also really recommend "in the finale" from Mario and Luigi: Bowsers inside story (one of my favorite games).
sonic is all about energy and the game soundtrack that embodies this the best to me is sonic rush. A New Day, Back 2 Back, What U Need, Wrapped in Black, etc. they perfectly embody the moments in which theyre used and have an amazingly infectious energy. theyre filled witch scratches and samples and have the sort of edge sonic was always intended to have to make him stand out and i could listen to it all day. its all of what makes hideki naganumas work distinct and appealing while amped to match the energy of the ultra high speed gameplay of sonic rush (bouncier basslines, higher tempos, etc)
For a long time, endless possibility has been the ultimate theme for sonic for me. Everything about it is just so… sonic. The drumbeat personifies his footsteps at Mach speed. The melody being so bright and hopeful matches his persevering attitude. The lyrics, about anything being achievable, are exactly what sonic is about. Even if the slowdown section is a great indication of the werehog, a specific concept tied to a specific game, you can still take it to represent that moment in pretty much EVERY sonic game where things look dark and hopeless, until sonic goes all out to beat the odds. It’s just… it’s just the perfect sonic song. It almost makes me sad that unleashed is the last game in an era of sonic games before what people call the meta era kicks in, but I will appreciate what that game did for the franchise as a potential last hurrah and all out grand finale for a struggling franchise. And it’s clear with its main theme that they still had hope.
Man, if it's the positivity you like in Sonic music, you'd absolutely love the Mighty Switch Force series' OST made by Jake Kaufman. It just explodes with uplifting melodies. If even just in your own time, I recommend Dalmatian Station from MSF2s OST. Also "best castle theme Mario has ever had" and it's not from Super Mario World. 😔

Supporting Me is such an important song within its context.
This is the moment where Shadow has decided to do the right thing, save the planet, and he knows that Maria is "supporting me."
"I'll be losing you, now" is Shadow saying that he knows that when this is done, he'll be losing her for real, that he'll have no quest for vengeance left to hold in her memory.

That’s why I love the callback in Frontiers dlc with I’m here orchestral version being phase 1.
I’ve never thought of them that way but they do kind of link up, in terms of tone and lyrics at least. More so EP and RFTS
"it has the 2000s punk stuff from my childhood"
Makes sense since it's the singer of Bowling For Soup! haha
BRO, credits of Mario Kart DS actually made me tear up as a kid, and even now as an adult. Such a somber, soft tune really is so rewarding to hear after “beating” the game. W fucking mod man, great taste lmao.
Referee! I’m fine with longer videos. More preferred since I listen to these at work.
great video marco, and great track selection for both sides
I'm ride or die with the Sonic series and it's endless musical variety and aesthetic, so by bias will always be there. That said there's so much incredible music that comes from Mario that can't be overlooked either. I adore the entire ost of Super Mario Odyssey and the Mario Kart series, especially. The staff roll song from Mario Kart 64 is an especially beautiful piece that I can't recommend enough if you haven't heard it.
Mario Kart Credits music never misses
@@TicTacToeCraft I agree aggressively
Nintendo music was catchy before, but it wasn't until the Wii when they really started investing into the production value with the likes of Mario Galaxy for some games. Wii U and 3DS is when Nintendo really started to knock it out of the park with it.
I agree about the mk64 staff roll so much
Except in the lyrical department.
Yes, once you hear and understand the lyrics it feels like a completely different track.
The listeners win in this competition.
Mario was lucky to even be in the competition with Sonic refraining from some real bangers like live and learn, his world, any of the metal Sonic themes, open your heart, the Egg Dragoon theme, Westopolis, What I’m made of, and any of the titan battle themes in Sonic frontiers.

Break through it all GOES HARD🔥🔥🔥
It frustrates me that 3D World's ost is never included in people's discussions about good Mario music
That might be because every aspect of this game was played very "safe". It's a solid title which is a heavy downfall from the Galaxy games. I, too, consider this game as ... *fine* at best, including it's music.
@@RaK0 The way I see it, Galaxy games have higher peaks, while 3D World is more consistently good. This applies to both gameplay and OSTs.
@TicTacToeCraft As a handheld title I think 3D Land does a better job. 3DW was really lackluster for me as a "big" Mario title.
Nega-Wisp Armor Phase 2 just doesn't sound right without the announcer calling "CUBE! LASER! HOVER! FRENZY!" et al over it. "FINAL COLOR BLASTER!"
Time Eater Boss theme doesn't sound right without Sonic's friends yelling "Watch out! This looks like a homing attack."
This is such a fun video!!! I hope there's a round two to this battle!
HAWT DAMN I had no idea Sonic music had such STANKY sax, wow!
If you want more: "Boxing T.K.O. - Mario & Sonic: Rio 2016"
Music is usually the only thing they consistently do well
@@TicTacToeCraftwould the mario and sonic series count as sonic music or mario music
If you like that sax, listen to Skycraper Scamper Day or night and Metallic madness act 2(Sonic Mania)
The real winner is the songs we listened along the way! 😃👍
I believe Mario deserves his own music review video like Sonic has 🙂↕️ There are way stronger tracks than the ones that were picked for this duel (especially on the side of the RPGs)
You bet!
i wouldnt say WAY stronger as thats a bit disrespectful to tracks like Gusty Garden, but the variety is large for sure
@@dantefredul6326I’m sad he didn’t do “in the finale”, as that one’s perfect for a video like this

Someone has probably said this but
Vivian in TTYD was a boss alongside her 2 older Sisters, the oldest Beldam being absuive towards her. Later on when Mario has lost his identity, Vivian helps him and once she finds out who she is helping, she decides to defect and join Mario's party. This theme plays once you get to be with her one on one.
Was awesome we need more mario vs sonic themes moderns and classic every kind of game of them
Yall have no idea how happy I was when Endless Possibilities won that coin toss.
0:23 As a fan of both, Sonic does, but that doesn't make Mario's music less good by comparison, Sonic is just on a tier of his own
Third time recommending E-102γ's theme from Sonic Adventure 1. I've already gone on about how much I love it in my previous comments, so I'll just say here to please listen to it. It's genuinely an amazing song.
yes yes yes yes YES
People need to give some credit to Sonic Colors DS soundtrack. I hope Marco listens to it sometime.
Isnt it the same but with sonic rush vibes?
The thing that blows me away about any Shadow songs involving Heigo Tani in SA2 is the drum and sound sequencing as well as the audio experimentation, like the treatment of the vocal sample at the end. because i'm pretty much a mixer at this point, it's a lot of inspo
Its not Mario vs Sonic at the Olympics but its close enough, lol
I think my only critique for this one wouldd be the tonal match up of some boss themes vs. . .normal Mario level themes and vice versa.
No mention of crush 40 is a WARCRIME
This was so fun! The back and forth was such a fun way to look at these songs, and the Mario tracks were really fantastic! Endless Possibilities is a very important song to me, it's the song I use to remind myself to keep striving, and the vocalist is the lead singer from Bowling for Soup, so that's fun, lol!
Glad you liked it!
A Crash Twinsanity’s OST analysis would be wonderful
Man i love the mario galaxy soundtrack. Its in my opinion the best mario soundtrack and maybe the best soundtrack in general
Nooo not biolizard not being favored by Marco that's one of my favorite sonic tracks 😭😭😭
I'd love to see another sonic vs Mario music battle. Or even one with other series that rival each other in a sense. Like ratchet and clank vs Jak and daxter
The Shadow Generations remix is much better.
@edgarsilva4744it doesn’t give the og vibe tho
@SonicTheHedgehogX15 I will say: I kinda hate the og vibe. I much prefer the rock version. Especially without the vocals.

I think he might not like Throw it All Away aswell when he eventually listen to it
18:35 sounds just like dreams come true. From the ending of sonic 2
19:26 kinda reminds me of Blue Sphere Special Stage from S3&K.
Great video! That was fun lol. Would love a part 2 of this
Tbh I don't like the concept of this series comparing pieces that are going for completely different things.
Nah mab you're downplaying the melodies in sonic.
Yeah, Mario music tends to be on the shorter side by looping about every minute and 10 seconds or so (on average), but I think you know that modern Mario RPGs actually have loops that are comparable to Sonic in length.
You’re absolutely right!
@AsecasJavi Actually, yeah, you're right.
@DaNintendude ohhh I get it yeah agreed
I generally enjoy Mario and Sonic music in different contexts. I think Mario's music is stronger in game but outside the games it's almost always the Sonic music I'd rather be listening to.
I have to say that i personally feel like sonic music has a bit more edge (no pun intended) to it in general
While Mario is consistent with beautiful melodies and masterfully setting the mood and even defining tropes for years to come, Sonic sets out to be unique and use music as a tool to tell the story, i also feel like sonic takes more risks in going out of the box.
Funny enough, mario spin-offs have some of my prefered OST from the series because i feel like they take more risks (stuff like Paper Mario, Mario RPG and Mario & Luigi)
Anyway, amazing track selecion and i am waiting for you to hear more megaman music, you get some many of them wrong in the quizes you need a crash course ):
Steam Gardens from Mario Odyssey is already a track that screams Sonic vibes. And, for a Sonic track with Mario vibes I would say it’s Midnight Owl
@matheusmunizduarte Midnight Owl gives me more Professor Layton vibes (even though I never played a game in the series), but I'll admit it's very similar to "Grifty the Traveling Minstrel" from TTYD (which is new to the remake).
I think 3D Blast Saturn would be right up your alley. Collectathon where you can go at your own pace and vibe
You could have 20 videos on just these two going back and forth alone. There is so much great music from both franchise's catalogs.
11:55 Just the words "Sega Saturn". You're in for a goood listen.
Doesn't take away the fact that Mario's best is really good.
i kinda disagree, but mainly because they were closer to my tastes this time around.
Vivian's Theme was a pleasant surprise to see here. She's my favorite party member in that game.
25:33 Other notable examples of instruments portraying animals:
"Carnival of the Animals" by Camille Saint-Saëns;
"Peter and the Wolf" by Sergei Prokofiev;
"Jurassic Park OST", "Jaws OST", etc... by John Williams
0:38 wait, WHAT, who said that?
Hopefully a dedicated Mario video is planned because there’s a lot of great Mario music out there that just wasn’t included in this
It wasn't really a serious song battle. It's more of a comparison and appreciation of each franchise's music.
@ And that’s fine, I just think the Mario music could’ve had some better picks is all
@TeknoThom Idk, I thought the picks were fine.
Don’t worry ;)
I agree with everything you said except for the tie breaker thing, bruh did you forgot round 6, free mario point, no sonic song in there
anyway this "competition" was more like an appreciation of the wonderful soundtrack of both franchises, so let's hope that Mario has his spotlight on this channel
Never heard that 3D Blast track before. My jaw is dropped. Good stuff 👌
It was a joy to watch this whole thing happen live! Respect for finding that shirt in a day!
U are right the real winners are really us, because now I know about Vivian’s theme and rusty ruins act 2
I'm so glad you listened to Vivian's theme! Paper Mario as a whole has fantastic music, but that might manage to be my favourite track out of all of the games.
DUDE I'm stoked you picked up on the Live & Learn motif immediately on Supporting Me!!!
Now you've got to listen to Endless Possibility's companion piece, Super Sonic Vs. Perfect Dark Gaia.
I loved this a lot! I feel like a series like this has lots of potential. Something I'd really love to see is Bloodbrone VS Lies of P!
We needed one of these
Btw, the reason Endless Possibility sounds so much like a 2000’s punk rock song (despite being made in 2008 obviously) is that it was made by Bowling For Soup!
He NEEDS to listen to more paper mario
It’s funny because the Memory Card toss was the deciding factor.
Wow that ending really opened up an endless possibility of content for you.... I'll see myself out now.
Man you know the fight is fierce when even the referee gets in it, that aerial was desperate 😂
I can only imagine Crash doing an unspeakable move banned in 183 countries
Cool video! Sonic and Mario are some of my favorite games, also i've seen it mentioned but I also really recommend "in the finale" from Mario and Luigi: Bowsers inside story (one of my favorite games).
marco, your video gave me a big big smile! reacted the same to gusty garden;D
Glad I could give you a smile!
sonic is all about energy and the game soundtrack that embodies this the best to me is sonic rush. A New Day, Back 2 Back, What U Need, Wrapped in Black, etc. they perfectly embody the moments in which theyre used and have an amazingly infectious energy. theyre filled witch scratches and samples and have the sort of edge sonic was always intended to have to make him stand out and i could listen to it all day. its all of what makes hideki naganumas work distinct and appealing while amped to match the energy of the ultra high speed gameplay of sonic rush (bouncier basslines, higher tempos, etc)
what a amazing video keep up the awesome work :D
I’m glad you liked it!
I was expecting 'Attack-a of the Whacka' to go against Nega wisp armor
That's a good one. It's one heck of a fusion.
love sonic lost world really underrated gem. glad the community is coming to its senses
Honeycomb Highway sounds like it could fit in with "Lupin III".
Cloudy Court couldn’t quite do it, so their older sibling Gusty Garden had to step in.
I had no idea mario had such awesome music
I was their on the livestream. Then I watched the livestream's recording. Now I'm here watching this again as a full-on edited video 😅
The winner was the friends we made along the way ahh ending
Man, if it's the positivity you like in Sonic music, you'd absolutely love the Mighty Switch Force series' OST made by Jake Kaufman. It just explodes with uplifting melodies. If even just in your own time, I recommend Dalmatian Station from MSF2s OST.
Also "best castle theme Mario has ever had" and it's not from Super Mario World. 😔
We need a part 2 with other IPs like Rockman/Megaman vs Metal Gear Both Sagas with Amazing Soundtracks
