I just found out that my osteoarthritis got worse ...in my hips ... always active ...73 years young lady...my spring and summer will be recuperating from two 😲😲😲....hip replacement surgery's.. prayers please ...🙏🙏🙏.
So glad to see this video! After 10 years of my annual blood work always finding I had high blood calcium level and then shrinking 2 inches in height my doctor ordered a bone density test. At 58 yrs and no other risk factors I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis. Further blood testing found I had extremely high parathyroid hormone level (PTH) resulting from a tumor on one of my parathyroid glands. I had a parathyroidectomy in June and my calcium and PTH levels are now normal. I’m working on bone health now. It was my experience that doctors may not understand high blood calcium and PTH levels. Maybe this information will be helpful to others.
I had the same thing several years ago, high calcium and elevated Parathyroid levels. My Endocrinologist checked my vitamin D level and it was pretty low, about 24. She put me on 5000mg of vit d daily and 600 mg of calcium. Within 6 months my vit d level was 45 and my calcium and parathyroid levels were normal, and they’ve been normal for 2 years now. I don’t think all doctors understand the connection between vit d and hyper parathyroid. Wishing you well
I'm lucky enough to live near a large city where there's an osteoporosis clinic staffed by a couple of endocrinologists. As Amy and others have mentioned, sometimes there's a secondary cause of osteoporosis that is treatable, and it's worth it to find out if you're one of those people. In my case, I appear to have garden variety osteoporosis, but it was still good to rule out other causes. Plus, I have a baseline collagen type I cross-linked telopeptide (CTX) level (a marker of bone resorption/loss that is detected in blood) that can be used to monitor the efficiency of my treatment in addition to biannual bone density tests.
I cried. When I was told!!!!!. Both hips & spine. No drinking for yrs now.... I'm almost 70- 2023. Inhalers/ vitamins...... Decent food..... Just hurts..,..... Not much sleep! (Jobs I did.( Not worth the good money I made.) When you're young you think you can do anyting. Till you get older.......

Hope your doing well now. I also “had” breast cancer and am on anastrazole. I already have osteopenia and am now trying to learn all I can to make my bones stronger. Hope it is going good for you now. Hugs❤
THANKS FOR ADDRESSING OSTEO GETTING WORSE.. I have never drunk alcohol and don't take any meds so good to go. But trying to maintain bone density so this info brings me hope.
Thank you 😊 i really loved hearing my bones wont crumble straight away as thats been my big fear & no-one has taken the time to tell me otherwise 😊 my dr is obviously very keen for me to go onto the injection which I am totally opposed to. Youve made my day thank you 😊
Fiona, thank you for verbalizing my fears. I have just been diagnosed with Osteoporosis and I also became very anxious. Every ache and pain I feel like it's my bones collapsing.
There are multiple treatments for osteoporosis. If you live near an osteoporosis clinic, I'd suggest talking with a specialist about what's the most appropriate treatment for you. I don't know what your experience with osteoporosis is, but having seen my maternal grandmother and especially my mother suffer with it, I feel strongly that the benefit outweighs any risk associated with medication.
@@mariashaffer-gordon3561 I live in Oklahoma. There are no osteoporosis clinics here. OP treatment is relegated to endocrinologists, rheumatologists and primary care doctors. I am open to drug treatment, IF I really need it. Even though I am a high fracture risk no one has convinced me the drugs are good for me. They just tell me benefits outweigh the risk.
Thank you you are the first person who is instilling hope in a real functional way. Loved your comment it doesn’t define you because it has after I had a broken shoulder . Underlying it has. I try not to but know it is. I’m going to listen to your videos and continue with exercise supplements and I restarted fosomax which I’d only done for a few months thank you
My daughter is in her to 30's and has osteoporosis. She had a transplant at 10 and the rejection drugs are very hard on the body. However, it's better than the alternative. She is working to have the best life she can. Thank you for all your advice. It is really helping both of us.

Diagnosed with Osteoporosis at 66 in 2021. Everything in my hormones and blood calcium was normal. I however: had very low levels of D and B12. Dr did not mention the relationship of these vitamins and OP. Luckily, I am a nurse and I know what to do right away. Ironically, I educate on this matters, but I failed to apply it to myself. After the initial shock, and refusing the prolia medication, I started my own plan to treat myself. I still consider myself with OP because I still have to do a new test, but overall I fell stronger and my aches and pains, that I attributed to getting old are gone. I was also pre diabetic, that is also resolved. Never have had a fracture, and I intend to continue on my path to stay as healthy as possible as I get older. I have never smoked, and only drink a bit of alcohol in social occasions. Also I have a very bad skin reaction to heavy alcohol consumption. My activity level was very low; my work and family dynamics were also making me sick. I had to relearn to focus on myself first. I wish you all good health. Great educational video!
Hi Nora, I feel hopeful after reading your post....60 with OP, prediabetic and high levels of stress. Nice to know how you managed OP so well. Hope to follow your path.
@@theresearcher481 I am glad that my experience can give hope and encouragement. Please, take care of yourself first, learn to delegate. Remember, we are not indispensable; the world with continue turning with or without you. Learn to prioritize, exercise, eat a wholesome diet, avoid excess stress, and try to get good sleep time. All these things are part of being healthy. I wish you the best.
Hello Nora, how do you get the doctors to agree to testing for vitamin/mineral levels? Every time I suggest it they say it varies so much that it does not really give good data. I don’t believe that to be true……. Are there labs that do this besides your doctor? Just curious how to get it checked without going through the normal doctor route. Thanks.
@@sheila7814 Change your doctor. While it is true that minerals and vitamins can change even daily, a major drop or high, can indicate a problem somewhere in the body. Vit D and B12 should not be a bargain. The minerals like potassium/sodium/mag Ca work together in different processes in the body and a major inconsistency indicates a problem that needs attention, even when they can only be measure in the blood. Calcium for ex can be normal in blood, but we still have deficiencies in organ functioning e.g muscles, bones and heart. They should be checked at least once a year. Many drs do not want to do full assessments and labs because of insurance restrictions. I am a nurse; I know how the system works. Take care and find you a dr that advocates for youi.
My initial reaction upon learning that my osteopenia had regressed to osteoporosis was both anger and depression. Although I am still unsure as to whether I will get back into ice skates, I have rebounded with a steady weight loss to my most healthy level since college and walking at least 6 days a week (10k+). The latest improvement is incorporating some weights and balance routines at home. Like your positive attitude and looking forward to trying some of your recommendations.
I'll bet they want you to do Boniva, or Reclast, etc., do some research, ask questions! I was diagnosed with osteoporosis, haven't broken a bone despite numerous recent hard falls! My mom took those drugs, that's when she started breaking bones, now has kidney disease stage 3!
I have been diagnosed 70 yo. I'm doing heavy duty targeted weight training. Don't feel fragile and I also have scoliosis with kyphosis. That's not stopping me. It takes hard work dedicated. Walking and some balance stuff ain't gonna cut it if you want to reverse some of it.
Thank you so much for this very heartening video. I am going to start increasing my protein and doing the excercises as shown. Reading the comments of others below gives me hope :)
I eat a very healthy diet, but struggle to eat enough! My appetite and ability to consume is not good! I only weigh 93 lbs! Recently I broke my knee cap and left wrist! Two years before I broke my right wrist! I have balance issues and while I haven’t been diagnosed with osteoporosis I’m sure I have it! I don’t want to be tested because if the exposure to radiation and I’m not going to take meds! Sooo it’s up to me to improve the situation naturally! I need to gain weight but…. I am exercising, Qigong, rebounding and walking! I’m trying to implement the exercises you recommend! Thank you very much for sharing! ❤️🙏
A doc in South Africa proscribe Prolia. It’s an injection. I was unable to get it because two pharmacies I went to on the way to the airport didn’t have it. Can I fight this with exercise and Carnivore/ keto diet?
So thankful to have found your site. I have been diagnosed with osteoporosis. Didn't take it seriously until it was too painful in my hip to walk a slight incline. I regularly walk 2 to 3 miles a day. I've taken Armour thyroid 60 mg. a day for 6:33 My Endocrinologist is going to give me injections once every 6mo. to protect my bones. I also began water aerobics and weight training. Im lactose intolerant so starting yogurt and almond milk into my diet. I really found your information helpful and the comments were helpful as well. Thanks
Great information I’m glad to hear positive information as doctors just want to throw drugs at you Not for me I’ve been excerising daily doing those 4 you showed on your video and also doing weights at home 3 times a week .I’m also eating good nutritional food including soy nuts lots of greens especially kale and bok Choy and always moving.I think if I’m building muscle I also building bones don’t let the doctors stress you out about it this video gives us the tools and ideas to keep strong bones 😊
Wow. I was diagnosed with osteopenia 20 some years ago. Diagnosed with osteoporosis 2 years ago but only a year ago my Dr said smoking and drinking contributed to osteoporosis. 50 year smoker and 40 year wine drinker here. Oh my! Got my 5th bout of walking pneumonia a month ago. Still smoking but I can't inhale any more so i just puff and blow it out. Doing my best to quit but it's hard after a lifetime of it. If we only knew then what we know now!
I have been working out 6 days a week for 33 years and after menopause I was diagnosed with Osteopenia. My work out consists of cardio and weight lifting and lounges. To say I was depressed is an understatement. The good news is that my TBS score is very good.
I don’t do any of those things you mentioned.. I’ve run 12 marathons, I continue to exercise 5 or more days a week… I was vegetarian for years I started eating a little chicken, eggs and Greek yogurt… my DEXASCAN said my spine had osteoporosis.. -4.5… and my hip is -2.5… I’m 74.. I just fell today and I have a bruise on my arm but nothing broke… I don’t trust the scans..l
I also got Prolia, but at the certain moment I had severe side effects and had to stop. I am dealing with osteoporosis for 35 years. Probably been born with it, due to the WII. My mother didn't have enough food.

Great video! You inspired me to get off the couch to do your recommended 4 exercises for osteoporosis. I did follow through and did what I could. I have left side shoulder, hip, knee and ankle weakness and pain. How about drinking whole milk? I feel much better after drinking one cup of milk daily. Wish I could find raw milk, I grew up on a farm as a child so, we drank RAW MILK.
Try taking ground eggshells to get your calcium along with calcium rich foods like green leafies, sesame seeds, tuna, sardines, etc. Monitor how much calcium you are getting tho, cuz you do not want to overdose....that's ah whole other set of health issues to deal with.
So I'm only 57 and have just been diagnosed and put on bone protector meds. My T score is -3. All the drugs I'm on are the ones you mentioned in addition to Nexium which I believe makes it worse, as well. What type of health professional should I be referred to? Also, my job requires me to do CPR. Is that a no go zone now?
Hi, I found your channel to be really helpful. I learned a lot of information since watching your channel. I am 75 and have osteoporosis. I couldn't understand why I would have it because I use to exercise 3 days a week, 1 hour each aerobics class. I found out through one of the ER doctors one time. I was in for asthma. He was the only doctor that informed me that steroids are causing my low bone. That opened my eyes! I'm also on a Asthma inhaler 2x daily because I had severe asthma. I feel like I'm doing better. I have been thinking about asking my doctor about my asthma medication, and if their is a way where I could cut back. I've been trying out the exercises on your videos for people with osteoporosis. I have a question about twisting whether sitting down or standing up. Is that not good for me to do?
Hi Judy , I am in the same boat as you! I have severe ostheoarthritis in bbboth hips and is causing the ball in my hip joints to flatten instead of being round. Walking is very painful and I need both hip replacements. Only thing is my surgeon will NOT do the surgery until I loose weight even though it’s so bad! I am a fall risk right now. Since last Sept. I lost 25 pounds with 17 more to go! And my oldest son marries this august! I am 69 years old living in an Assisted Living Facility!
I'm 67 & started walking atleast 1 hour--briskly since I was 23. I agree that walking will help you to maintain bone. But ONE THING you never mention is walking up a steep hill!! Why not? Resistance will help you BUILD BONE so make your walk more challenging by using a treadmill with a nice incline & work at that or find a hill--and climb it. It has helped me greatly maintain my bone health.
I'm 64 yo and was just diagnosed with osteoporosis in 3 places of my spine. Unfortunately, I have COPD (emphysema) and can't walk or exercise, even walking is not possible because of the pain in my back and I give out after being verticle for about 10-15 minutes. Is there ANY hope for me. I have GERD and can't (and don't want to take Fosamax). ReClast enfusions sound frightening because of the risks of femur fracture among 1000 other bad side effects. What does a person like me DO? Help.
Risedronate. I was on it for three weeks, by which time I was in so much pain I could scarcely walk. The Osteo clinic suggested I stopped taking it for three weeks but it took four weeks before I was out of pain and able to move freely again. I stopped taking it altogether at that point (a couple of years ago). I'm 84 and still very active.
Noting makes me crazier than someone telling me to walk when I can't. I have post polio syndrome, spinal stenosis, failed back surgery. Was on alendronate for 10 yrs and had a fracture of the femur. I read somewhere to take strontium but rheumatologist said b this builds bad bone. Doesn't recommend it. Any further recommendations are greatly appreciated!!
Thank you for this fantastic video. I have a 12 lbs weighted vest that I wear about 3 times a week on my 30 min walk. I do an hour walking a day. Do you recommend that wearing it more often might be more beneficial? Also, can you tell me your thoughts on mini-trampoline use for the steps and is it beneficial for the bones (I am in Canada and our weather this time of year does not always allow for walking outside)? I find my Apple Watch picks it up as running or elliptical exercise when I am on the trampoline but my heart rate does not go up too high, it kind of hovers around 100 bpm. What are your thoughts on wearing the weighted vest while gently jumping (hardly a jump, just up and down movement if wearing the vest) on the mini-trampoline? Thank you so much for any information you can provide for my questions.
Thank you so much for this info! Do you think that medication for osteoporosis is avoidable? I have been told otherwise and scared into thinking it is the only option.

It’s so true you do get very anxious when you get this bad news about your dexas scan something I think about it is it is natural at 70 to not have bones of a 30 year old also if your small framed your going to naturally have smaller bones and I don’t think that means your bones aren’t strong.I try to keep my body alkaline with lots of fruit verges protein calcium all these foods you talk about is right we need them along with the strength training.taking drugs is not the way they told me I have border line osteoporosis but I can jump do all these 4excerises you gave us no trouble and I’m not crippled over in pain it really makes one wonder about these bom scans .
My osteopenia has gotten worse over the past two years. I don't smoke or drink (never have). I take 50mcg of levothyroxine each day. Would Armour thyroid be better? Is there a difference as far as osteoporosis goes? I also have kidney stones. I had surgery this year to remove those. Why would my body take calcium out of my bones just to make stones in the process of trying to get rid of it? I suspect that my body is too acidic. Would this cause my body to pull calcium out of my bones...in an attempt to neutralize the acid? By PTH levels are normal.
I am 37 now and diagnosed osteo in my 35. My world fell upside down and i got depressed. Dont know what to do my lower back hurts all the time as i have sitting office job. And i have anterior pelvic tilt also 😢

All the research and studies I've read on longevity say that people who drink, especially red wine, live longer than people who don't drink. Can't be that bad for the body!
Do you have any videos on pre-hab (I.e. what can someone do to improve their recovery prior to hip replacement) and rehab (I.e. what can someone do after hip replacement surgery to recover more quickly and improve mobility)
Great question. "High dose" is definitely a relative term. The important thing to know that taking thyroid meds can have an effect on bone density. Everyone reacts differently, but I recommend that my clients on thyroid meds to make sure they are staying on top of their bone scans and having them at a regular interval based on the initial findings.
I greatly appreciate these informative videos on osteoporosis! I also have peripheral neuropathy, so I can't do the 4 exercises you covered in one of your other videos. I figure I knew all the medication’s but I did not know the thyroid one that’s upsetting because I have Graves’ disease so eventually I’ll be on thyroid medicine!!!
Dr. Pradip Jamnadas, MD, has many videos on youtube. He is a cardiologist who talks about the connection between atherosclerosis and osteoporosis seen in his heart patients. He recommends vitamin K2 and diet changes. He is an excellent resource. God's blessings to you.
I don’t know I talk to a friend of mine. The lady died at like 70 I’m a little worried not a little really worried the reason I have messed up bones thinks the doctors not realizing I have Graves’ disease !!! I went 10 years, and nobody can figure it out. Even my baby was born without a thyroid.!!!
A rebounder can be good for balance, aerobic conditioning and endurance, but not for bone building. It's not enough "impact". And yes, standing twists or side bends are not my first choice of exercises.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, this is very helpful. Is walking or exercise 30 minutes a day sufficient if the rest of the day is spent in primarily sedentary tasks such as crocheting, reading, etc.? Our cold, icy weather makes it hard to get outside much. Knowing how much is enough or doing something and thinking it’s never enough causes anxiety.
1) Heavy drinking/smoking. One drink a day, "probably okay". 2) Medicines we take. I take thyroid, but I don't know what a "high dose" is. Still, has to be a contributor. 3) Couch potato-ism.
Hey Cindy, thanks for the summary! As far as the thyroid meds are concerned, it's important to keep current with your dexa scans to make sure your bone density is where it needs to be. "High Dose" is a relative term for each of us. Good luck and keep exercising!

Hello Nora, thanks for sharing, what a great story! Looks like you are on the right path, keep it up 👍🏻
Hi Nora, I feel hopeful after reading your post....60 with OP, prediabetic and high levels of stress.
Thank you so much. Your info and calmness really brought my stress down.
You are so welcome Robin!

GERD medication is also very bad but doctors prescribe it far too easily.
I'm 67 & started walking atleast 1 hour--briskly since I was 23.
I agree that walking will help you to maintain bone. But ONE THING you never mention is walking up a steep hill!!
Why not?
Resistance will help you BUILD BONE so make your walk more challenging by using a treadmill with a nice incline & work at that or find a hill--and climb it.

what do you think about medicines like Risedronate Sodium tabs 150mg. I would like to stop taking this medicine, any suggestions?
Risedronate. I was on it for three weeks, by which time I was in so much pain I could scarcely walk. The Osteo clinic suggested I stopped taking it for three weeks but it took four weeks before I was out of pain and able to move freely again. I stopped taking it altogether at that point (a couple of years ago). I'm 84 and still very active.

What is considered high dose of medicine to treat Hypothyroidism?
Great question. "High dose" is definitely a relative term. The important thing to know that taking thyroid meds can have an effect on bone density. Everyone reacts differently, but I recommend that my clients on thyroid meds to make sure they are staying on top of their bone scans and having them at a regular interval based on the initial findings.
