  • The two-day conference Heidegger’s Black Notebooks (September 11 & 12, 2014) focused on the philosopher’s late and unambiguously pro-Nazi writings, which may very well represent a point of no return for Heidegger scholarship. Here is the panel discussion following a screening of Only a God Can Save Us-a documentary on Heidegger’s philosophy and his relationship to Nazism. Panelists included Richard Wolin of the Graduate Center; Jeffrey Van Davis, director of the film; Emmanuel Faye, University of Rouen; Karsten Harries, Yale University; and Thomas Sheehan, Stanford University.

    Is there a video of the second day of this conference? They keep referring to "what will be discussed tomorrow" which seems to be the most interesting part.

    They didn't really say anything about the Black Notebooks but merely repeated old hat assertions on Heidegger's relation to the NSDAP.

    16:00 The claim that the topic of authenticity in Being and Time can apply to the Volk as a whole and this takes to nazism is rather absurd. The Sein-zum-Tode, for instance, which is a a fundamental component of authenticity can hardly be applied to the Volk, since death is individual. The poor philosophical quality of usual speech about Heidegger and nazism is astonishing.

      First, I think you misrepresent what they said. But what you said is simply incorrect. If you had read par. 74 of S&Z, you would know that, as one has to move away from the Gesellschaft and its inauthenticity, one can do this by reactivating a project which has been left latent in the Volksgemeinschaft. This last is a piece of jargon invented by the nazis used in 1927 in S&Z. Among other things said there, it is as Sein-zum-Tode that one reactivates this project, so that one can "run" towards death "with resoluteness" ("vorlaufende Entschlossenheit"). This is also a piece of nazi vocabulary taken from the lore of the Helden von Langemark.

    • @mathieumarion9929
      @mathieumarion9929 8 років тому

      I do not so much as "accuse" as I point out that typical move against critics, which consists in claiming that they don't know what they are talking about. Unfortunately, you did not show that you know much about what you are talking about.

    • @LaureanoLuna
      @LaureanoLuna 8 років тому +3

      Neither did you. I have carefully read that paragraph once and again and, though it has no doubt a political content, it does not linearly apply the topic of authenticity (which strictly speaking applies only to the Dasein) to the existence of the Volk. I do not deny Heidegger's philosophy contains ingredients that explain why he became a member of the nazi party: I wrote a thesis arguing for this (and I ended up tired and fed up). What I do claim is that the treatment of that relationship here and usually has poor philosophical quality. Instead of establishing easy but forced relationships, one should dig a little deeper .

      Most of their evidences come from his wife, and Heidegger himself did kneel to Nazism. But to say his philosophy has teemed with NS and thus needs to be canceled is as if to say anyone who is not a full heart supporter of BLM or LGBTQ cannot qualify to be a philosopher.

    Karsten Harries' claim that Heidegger knew Frege, Russell "and these people inside out", on the basis of his first paper is simply bogus. I like this sort of claim in a context where the typical move against any criticism of Heidegger is the equally preposterous claim that his critics know nothing or do not understand Heidegger's philosophy.

      Remember this post?
      Don't mind him, he belonged to CEDADE in the 80's, a Spanish neo-Nazi group concerned with the publishing of materials regarding Nazism and Holocaust denial, a group that the son of Klaus Barbie (also known as "Butcher of Lyon") was active in.
      Laureano Luna Cabanero, now a high school philosophy teacher in Spain, one of the most anti-Semitic countries in the EU also likes to use his spare time online to deny the Holocaust... Who knows how many of his students he has corrupted with his vile ideology.
      Thanks to the power of social media, we'll find out.
      He also wrote a book... www.worldcat.org/title/principios-filosoficos-fundamentales-del-nacionalsocialismo/oclc/434113339
      "Principios filosóficos fundamentales del nacionalsocialismo", published in Barcelona, 1983
      "In the early 80s I had several experiences of the supreme identity that allowed me to enter the realm of the divine. As a result of this sudden clarity I wrote a pamphlet in which I fundamentally describe Nazism. After realizing the gaffe, I have decided to switch to the national left and I have condemned Nazism, but I keep in touch with God. Simply delete it in my résumés of the booklet. A small trap for my papal infallibility can not be questioned."

That there are references to Frege, Russell in a 1912 paper is a proof that he knew "these people inside out" is utter bogus, given that even some of their important works were not yet to be published, and that some of them are still the topic of exegetical debates today. He knew some of their writings, granted, but "inside out" is ludicrous. People who know the stuff will find Karsten and you arrogant and shallow, no amount of admiration of Heidegger should imply that sort of crap. For people like you, it is pleasing to think this because their genius is made out to have read and understood all and dominated in thoughts these inferior minds, known how mistaken they are without actually have shown anything concrete in the way of actual extensive knowledge of their writings and of valid criticisms. I defy you to prove to me the contrary.

Heidegger was a philosopher and whether he was a sex addict, lovers manipulative and antisemite have little to do with his philosophical work. It amazes me to see four grown-up scholars gossiping and projecting their personal shadows on Nazy/Heidegger. Yes, that was a bad personal side of Heidegger. Can we please talk about his philosophy stead? Thank you.

      The central issue here it seems to me is that terms like "world Judaism " whatever that is, that are used in the notebooks,represent all those elements heidegger wished to eliminate from Germany;machination,instrumental calculation,cosmopolitan culture.The fact that this paranoid fantasy would involve the physical destruction of millions of people seems to have been beyond his political imagination but then I don't suppose he bothered to read mein kampf before signing his party membership form.
