Surprise! At 13:36 you showed a shot of the building that my Grandmother lived in on the inner harbour of Victoria, BC Canada. Not the houseboats, she lived in the red brick building, although we could see them from her windows. She was an amazing woman who lived to be 103. It’s a small world. ❤️🇨🇦😎

What a great video! We’ve been wanting to learn more about the differences between floating homes and houseboats. Our houseboat does not have much insulation, but newer houseboats do have insulation as an option. We heat our houseboat with central heat/HVAC with shore power, and use the gas-powered generator if we ever lose power. We now have lithium ion batteries to power our outlets and fans in the summer, so we don’t have to use the generator as much. Really cool that y’all have a wood-burning stove. Puts our little electric fireplace to shame 😂. Thanks for sharing!

Yes we love the wood stove 😍 a little more legwork but the ambiance & heat output are worth it! 🙌

@@KeepingAfloatWiththeJoneses we'd love to add solar to our houseboat, but it's more of a longterm goal right now that we are saving up to meet. If we were able to travel beyond our lake, say on a river, then we'd try to switch to solar sooner rather than later so we wouldn't have to worry about shore power while traveling long distances. Our lithium ion batteries + shore power to recharge them are plenty for our off-grid adventures on Lake Lanier.
Looking forward to hearing more about this new build you guys are planning 😀. Hopefully with another beautiful wood stove!

Great information guys thanks... My sailboat was made for cold water. It heats up with a tiny wood stove and stays warm for hours. However my DIY houseboat is cold even with the heat on. Thinking of installing heated floors for use at the dock. Or a generator on cold evenings.
Yes some sailboats are definitely made well to hold in heat!! I bet that was so cozy 🥰 houseboats in general just tend to fall short in that way though, so you’re not alone there! Would it be practical to use a wood stove in your DIY houseboat too? Heated floors would be top notch for sure!
First, you two are really awesome people to watch. Keep doing what you’re doing. Makes people like me wish i could get out of the Midwest. Question: Are there websites with listings for floating homes? You guys mentioned they sell in 5 minutes. How does a person not from the area obtain one without an in?
Hey, so sorry just now seeing this comment! There are not any websites with consolidated lists of floating homes for sale in our area. That might be possible in other areas where these are prominent, but I’ve never heard of such a site if so. Since these are sometimes listed on FB marketplace though, if you’re not from the area a good way to know as soon as one is posted is to save a search query on marketplace (“floating cabin” “houseboat” etc) in the geographical range of Fontana or another lake that has them so you get a notification as soon as one is posted. Don’t haggle on price, if you can afford it just tell them you’ll buy it and to take the listing down (before someone else makes a higher offer lol). You can also call around to local marinas on lakes allowing these periodically to ask if they are aware of anyone considering selling.

Haha we have only ever had 1 snake, & it was back before we lived here when we were renovating & there were wood piles everywhere (snake heaven)! never since 🙌

Haha understandable but yep! The tennessee valley river system spans through most of the southeast so there’s lots of TVA lakes in other states! 😊
My house boat that we are remodeling is more like a house. My kitchen alone was 10 grand. The boat is insulated .the first thing you do when you leave is turn off the water. . We also have a full size washer and dryer. We live on it year round we have a company that builds a boat called the tiny. . Small house boats that look like tiny houses. . You need to check them out .

Have y’all looked at the small China diesel heaters , put one one my boat last year and so far doing great , do y’all plan on adding more solar and adding a mini split heat pump
We did look into diesel heaters before getting the wood stove but in the end the wood stove has worked out great for us so far! Plus we have an unlimited supply of wood all around us to use haha, that helps the wallet out 😋
No plans to add solar or mini split to this house, but we’ve got some exciting plans coming up for a potential new build in 2023 that will indeed include those things!! 🤫🤩

Communities suck, neighbors way too close, lake fontana has the best i have seen fore more room, distance is great
at least in our harbor! 🫡 a little more crowded on down the lake. We like our neighbors but not as much as we like our privacy 😅
