  • Washing your Karate Belt - 帯を締めるコツ【Akita's Karate Video】
It is hot in- and outside of the Dojo and your Karate belt got sweaty. Or you forgot it in your sports bag and it couldn´t dry well…
Should you wash your Obi, is it really a good idea? How about the color, will it change? Can the belt even shrink and get shorter? In this video, Stefanie Akita is testing it, using two Hirota black belts. Please check how they look after the washing experiment and if they are still black and nice.
You have already washed your Obi and want to share how it went? Feel free to let us know and leave a comment...
All information in this video is unbinding and without guarantee. The result after washing can differ from belt to belt….
For this video, there are German subtitles available.

I wash my multiple obi regularly. Lightly ringing out the obi will help prevent shrinking. I’ve washed obi from ProForce, Tokaido, and Satori with no ill effects. My training partners have also washed obi from Shureido and Seishin with no ill effects. Granted we all train with cotton obi as they are more durable. Satin and silk really should be reserved for special occasions and thus generally shouldn’t need washed as thoroughly nor as regularly. (Yes, I am aware many people buy satin as their training obi.)

I washed my Hirota normal cotton brown belt and I liked the effect it gave it. It softened the cotton ever so slightly and gave it a nice subtle fade. I will do the same when I get a normal cotton Hirota black belt too. I guess it’s just personal preference.

Thanks for the interesting video Stefanie. Do you or Akita Sensei know whether there is a „obi washing habit“ in Japan? I think I will never wash my obi because it contains so many „memories“ (sweat, blood and tears) of many years of practise 🥋 😄👍🏻 Oss!!

Many thanks for your interest and nice comment. Probably, there is no such Karate obi washing habit in Japan. I wonder how many people do wash their belt… It would be interesting to find out.

My size 7 Hirota obi is a bit too long on me. I'd like to shrink it by washing in warm water.
