Some thirty years ago while working for a grocery food chain some customer bought groceries and paid with nothing but silver coins. There were a couple of Morgan dollars along with some halves, and some quarters, along with some other small change. Working in the back office I had to reconcile the draw right in front of the cashier. When I saw the coins I asked her about them and she told me the story, and then she left. I bought those coins and brought them home to put aside for my little girl. The Morgans were pretty dingy looking as were the halves and the silver quarters. I didn't care; I fell in love with the pieces because of their artistic beauty and their historical significance, and I've been hooked ever since. I go to the bank regularly and treasure hunt for key dates, errors, die varieties, of every denomination and from time to time I do find some amazing stuff, albeit far and few between.

It's an even split across the board. It's an investment, a legacy. It's the thrill of the hunt when you find something on your checklist at the price you're happy to pay. It's the discipline of walking away from over priced coins or not settling for a lower grade. It's constantly learning and sometimes teaching. Not to mention, it's legal! Unlike the vices I had growing up! Ha!

OK, I'll answer the question - why do I collect coins? Two main reasons and one minor reason. M1) History and design M2) Everyone collects SOMETHING, I collect coins m1) My dad "infected" me with searching coins for "THE ONE" (1950 D Nickel) and the better one (1916 D Mercury dime). AND . . . it's fun.

My grandfather was a coin collector, he gave us (well, our parents) all a Kennedy half the year we were born, and then mint sets as we grew up in the 60's and 70's, including the square 3 coin Bicentennial proof sets. My Mom would get everything out a few times a year so we could look at them. He also made sure we each had our own Penny books, and that was another great way to introduce us into the Hobby. Flash forward 45 years, and I started collecting again. I enjoy the history behind it more now. I can look at a coin from the Depression and think about the travels that coin had, how many hands it had been through before finally being in mine. I love Trade dollars and coins, Wooden Nickels, and random tokens that point to a specific place and time, and the struggles of those that used them. Don't get me wrong, I like the shiny brights of a slabbed proof coin for the art of the piece, but to hold a worn coin that may have traveled across the country on a wagon, or across the sea to our fighting forces...those I love for the story.

The reason I collect anything and not just coins is for the amazing history each vintage piece holds but also the quality, workmanship and pride that went into alot of the things we all collect from years past. Coins hold a special place in my heart and always will from their artwork, nostalgia, history and beauty. I hope to some day stop by your shop, shake your hand and purchase a Morgan from you!

Fast forward 40 years and my daughter showed a little interest in collecting and it got me going! I’ve been hooked all over again and have a nice collection of my own. I got my kids eye balling everything that comes their way lol!❤

When it gets right down to it... I like the looks of old coins, They are artwork. I metal detect and just recently found a decent 1865, 2 cent piece. Yes I hope to find rare coins worth a lot. But thru the years what I find more rewarding is a Type set which I can upgrade as the opportunity presents itself. I went thru the (Hunt brothers) silver scam, sold off a lot of nice Mercury and Barber dimes for scrap. Sure wish I hadn't done that, Didn't like it when I did it. Investing in silver is a whole different ball game now. Coin collecting (Selective) Type or Series, but not really as a road to rich's, It's not there.

  • @55metalmonkey

I started in stacking precious metals, gold silver platinum ect. also into scrap jewelry to refine down to pure metal because I'm into chemistry... slowly got into coins because of the silver content. After a while I got interested in the history and so many variations, I didn't care if it was silver I just wanted at least one of every year. I don't care if they are proofs or mint state or anything beyond face value. There is a lot dumber stuff to collect beyond money. I still collect precious metals if I can get a good deal on them but coins fills the void when I don't have the spare funds to drop on a 1/2oz of gold.

The way I collect is specific to the way a coin looks. I collect mostly silver, some gold and occasionally a copper. The only thing I try to keep are the coins that have superior eye appeal, the perfect patina or maybe some unique toning that is attractive. I specifically remember coins that ive owned in the past that had pleasing looks. One was a 1918-S walking liberty half in VF but it had lovely toning. I made a few bucks off it and never seen again. It's often times those perfectly circulated coins that are unique to me. I once owned a draped bust half cent in fine condition that had the most appealing chocolatey look of originality. I bought it years ago cheap and made 20 bucks off it later in life. Coins like that we all wish we had back. Not to mention the massive lamination error peace dollars I had that I sold for cull prices. Bought almost an entire roll and I was ignorant, didn't know what it was and thought they looked like junk. That one hurt.

I guess I have the "collector gene" so I may have ended up coin collecting anyway. But I really started because my older brother started coin collecting. He had a lot of the "Whitman Classic" coin folders and started filling them w coins found in change so I started doing this, too. I stopped for a while during college and early work years but got drawn back into to it. I collect mostly for the fun of it but in later years I've started coin hunting at banks and selling silver that I've found to dealers and also selling some of my duplicates at my monthly coin club auctions.

I collect coin due to their Beauty and History. I have not had very much money most of my lifetime
What I have enjoyed the most is giving as gifts coins away to people who also appreciate the Beauty and History, yet they have no real interest or knowledge in Coin Collecting. They have no idea how little even a Mercury Dime actually costs, and they are thrilled to get one.
I just gave away as a birthday present to one of my wife's and myself best friend, a raw 1880 VF Morgan Dollar, a 1943 VF-XF Walking Liberty, (both in acrylic 2x2 holers), and a 1971 Brown Ike, she loved the beauty and the history, and the coins really do not cost that much. Try giving 3 Mercury Dimes away, some people think they are cool, and they will remember you for years!

My dad owned a grocery store from the 50’s-70’s. He received all types of coins and dollars. He passed away in 2015 & my mom in 2016. I new what he had collected so I had a leg up on my brother. It took us several months researching the value of coins/dollars. What we didn’t keep we sold. I love to collect Morgan & Silver Eagle dollars. I purchased all the 2021 Morgan/Peace dollars. Sent them to PCGS and received a MS70 on all. I haven’t purchased any Silver Eagles lately because I believe the prices are to high from the US Mint.

I am a new collector. No one in my family showed any interest. I started by stacking silver and hoarding copper cents. Looking for varieties didn't come right away. After becoming bored of just looking at copper cents, I started looking for varieties. I have a few wide am's and got 2 of them graded. I'm still waiting to find a proper doubled die. I found a 1972 no fg half dollar which I'm still stunned at the "value" of the coin I paid $.50 for. I had never held an Indian head cent before, and now I have 5 that have came out of coin rolls. I love the history of coins and am not trying to strike it rich. My hobby is much better than some other things I could be doing with my time.

I said yes and the guy had dozens of bright shinny red indian cents and from there I was hooked. The guy had nice lincolns and dad bought those. A few years later the guy had a flying eagle cent for $25. I only had $20. I asked dad i only have $20 he said ask the guy to see if the store owner will take $20. I did what my dad said and the store owner sold it to me for $20 and was so nice he had a smile on his face selling me that flying eagle cent. . I was hooked ever since.

For me it was the dates on coins. I discovered a 1919 Lincoln cent in 1962 and was astounded that something that old was still in existence. Later I started stamp collecting for the same reason. Then comic books, sports cards, magazines....anything "old". But that cent was only 43 years old, hardly old now that I am 73. I quickly tired of stamps, too many. The post office was putting out new issues every day. I could not keep up. Now the U.S. mint is doing the same thing. I hate what they did to the Washington quarter. So many new things to collect. Too much hassle keeping up with everything. Give me the old issues, the historical side of coin collecting. To hold something that was in someone else's hand 200 years ago is exciting to me. And I am not a rich man so I cannot collect based on investing, by having the absolute finest grades. There is something to be said for even worn coins. Each coin tells a story. So, I buy and collect problem free, lower grade coins and still enjoy owning them, holding them in my hands. The exciting thing was finding a coin I needed. I started going through all my family's little coin banks and cans and found coins that excited me. All these years later I am still on that quest to find coins I need.

There's a difference between coin collectors and coin accumulators. I guess most "collectors" fall into the latter category. My mother came by and got them and kept them in a box which I would look at often as a kid. That started my interest in coins. My passion is in 1870s to 1964 coinage, and my numismatic goal in life is to have one of every year and mint mark for Flying Eagle/Indian/Wheat cents, 2+3+20 cents, Shield/V/Buffalo/Jefferson-5FS, Mercs-FSB, SLQ-FH, Washington, Franklin-FBL,Walking Liberty, Morgan, Peace, Trade dollars.

I was like, I don't know what it is... but I want some. 38 years later, we are still best friends ( I call his mom and dad, my mom and dad). The hunger is still in me to collect coins, both silver and clad. My favorites are the Peace and Washington quarters in which I have all silver dollars. Daniel has helped me complete the set. The quarters are all the silver ones from 32-64 and all the clad from 65-now P,D,S in which Daniel has helped complete that set as well.

My grandfather has passed a few years now but that was the start of it and I always remember looking at old Nickels & pennies in my change when I was a kid but I only liked how old they were. Rest In Peace Papa. But also thank you to a role model of mine Reno for reintroducing me to the hobby and stacker mentality. It’s truly a great way to build a savings that is equivalent to the bank. Remember make your money work for you & you don’t own it unless you hold it! I truly love collecting & stacking ✌🏻

I got interested in coins when I was around 10yrs old. I have collected off and on for 45 years. I enjoy the history and the beautiful designs of coins. I am collecting mostly dollar coins now, but I still go through change and bank rolls.

I collect because of my father and grandfather who were both collectors. I gravitated to type coins as I like history and I like to imagine the people who would have handled them.

My papaw got me started when I was around five, he would pay me in change for doing chores and I started a piggy bank. Fast forward to sixteen, I needed a little extra cash to buy a car and when I went to the bank to cash my change in. The head teller told me that I had coins worth more than just face value. I received my coin collecting 101 lesson that day and I've never stopped. I love the feel of holding real money and the history that it brings with it.

My interest started about four months back. In September of last year, our economy in UK hit a dip with political decisions by the new prime minister. I was naturally curious how this happened and discovered a bit about investments. So I opened a little pension fund in shares and precious metals and before I knew it, the door to coins opened as part of that. From there I began taking an interest in the history of coins, the state leaders around at the time, all that history. So, they serve as little time capsules of different eras in time, as well as collectable items. I particularly enjoy silver coins from the time before debasement, because it means that a true currency was (and still is) backed - my collection has a spot bullion price if premiums fail.

First coin collected as a kid was the bicentennial quarter when it came out and then started a jar of wheat cents as I found them in pocket change. The interest came back just when covid was starting here in the US.

My grandparents, parents and an uncle who was a merchant marine, collected notes and coins, but not seriously. As a child, I collected modern U.S. coins, but again, not seriously. A few years ago I started stacking PMs and realized that I could buy ancient coins... and that decent specimens weren't really all that expensive.. and that triggered it for me. My reasons for collecting are very varied, but the history and the art is what draws me to it mostly. If it has a little silver in it... so much the better. :)

I think I collect for the art of it. I like searching and searching for coins I need and then eventually finding an awesome piece like I’ve never seen. And then it’s mine and it’s off the market. Many people just get tired of searching and settle on something due to price. I hold off until I find one I have to have. It’s a pleasant hobby to think about and can be limitless as to what you want to do.

That 96P is lovely. When I grew up in the '50s and early '60s, most boys and some girls, collected either coins or stamps or both. I did both. My mom started me on both by giving me a stamp album and some Whitman 39c coin folders for my birthday in 1959. Both hobbies are so much fun! Both a little bit different from each other but similar in several ways. I collected all the way from then until now. I did not let my newfound interest in girls, at High School, interrupt my collecting. If I did not spend all that $ on my 2 hobbies, I would have blown it, on a bunch of stuff and have nothing to show for it!

Ive collected for years, my father got me started on it. I enjoy the history, & also some of the beautiful designs used, especially from early 1900s & 1800s, and also 1790s. Look at where our country was at those periods of time. Plus finishing out sets, I collect several different types of coins, gives you a sense of accomplishment.

Similar case for me… Parents collected when they first got married as a cheap hobby. Mom was a bank teller and was able to grab some stuff. Dad was into coins starting at a young age and it rubbed off on me. My favorite coin is probably the Walking Liberty Half and the Connecticut Copper - Only have a few of them in good or less condition. Also love the half cent and large cents… Finally I really love the Flying Eagle cent. But it was my parents and grand mother. Cheers!

It’s always good to have a refresher on why we do what we do. Everyone has a different reason. Collecting old match books won’t get anybody through an emergency.

I have many reasons why I collect. Started with my dad as a kid. We would search roll after roll of coins. Then the history got to me. Holding coins which Lincoln may have had in his pockets. Then the legacy aspect. I’m in my mid 60’s now and really get a sense of accomplishment when I complete a set. So I quest it would be a all of the above type scenario for me. As I said now I’m trying to build sets for the grandkids to get them interested in collecting and to leave my kids and them some memories. I enjoy it a lot.

Started collecting coins at age 10,got a California gold piece from a neighbor for helping him clean his yard,I was hooked I would go through change to find wheat pennies, the TV guide had an advertisement from Littleton coin company and joined,so I would mow yards and buy coins from them, well that was 47 years ago and I don't buy from Littleton anymore, lol but I still go and hunt down coins at yardsales, estate sales and other ways, well I found out a few years later my California gold piece was a fake,so a fake California gold piece got me started in collecting, how ironic but it started me in a hobby I enjoy greatly,God Bless everyone.

I'm 38, I've been a collector as far back as I can remember.. calling people out for having silver change in their pockets. I loved the aesthetic look of old 🪙's. For me 🪙 collecting was a natural occurrence when you love art, history, technology, and science. Value is generally inconsequential, but I do follow auctions to be aware and educated. I also like to collect currency for the exact same reasons.
