- Published 10 November 2015 - 24 hours after my prostate cancer surgery, I am walking around and talking about my ever-improving recovery. Walking is important after a prostatectomy, as it helps to move gas out of the body that was place into the abdomen during the surgery.
Thanks Mark for sharing the video. I am 67 years of age. I had my robotic prostatectomy carried out early Saturday morning at Ross Hall hospital Glasgow by Dr Imran Ahmad and it is now early Wednesday morning. So far everything has gone exactly to plan. The surgery has been a success and I was discharged home after two days with my catheter in place. I will return to hospital 10 days after the op to have my catheter removed. Like yourself I have a great consultant who filled me with confidence from the moment I met him. I basically had all options open to me to treat my cancer but decided on the robotic prostatectomy route with Dr Ahmad and I'm so glad I did. So far so good. I’m 51 and just had my prostate removed yesterday. I’m feeling everything you said. I just passed gas for the first time and I’m feeling much better. This sucks but it helps to know I’m not just being a baby about the discomfort. Thanks for sharing.

Had mine removed almost 7 weeks now. I got rid of the gas the first night at home while in bed. Took almost two hours for all gas to make its way out. Once over I felt so so much better. I’m 66. Incontinence is not bad. Mostly now leakage in the evening which I cannot figure out why.
@@mossbrg5 I have more in the evening too. I figure it’s muscle fatigue as the day goes on.
Thanks for the video. I’m 70 and just had prostate biopsy & rotator cuff surgery two days apart. ( Had to be off blood thinners for both) I do have prostate cancer and will soon have surgery. Your video gave me comfort. Thank you for sharing.

Thank u so much for this video. I’ve been diagnosed with prostate cancer and thinking towards having this procedure done. I’ve never had a catheter in me before so at 68 I’m nervous and scared at the same time. Of all things I have cancer. I’m praying that I’ll get through all of this and will be cancer free. This is so mind boggling.
Depending on the cancer there is a procedure that they inject some radioactive seeds to destroy the cancer. It's very painful but goes away after about 2 weeks without having to remove the prostate. Removing the prostate may take from 6 months to a year to fully recuperate . This can affect erection plus have incontinence issues but the most important thing is to remain alive. Anything else is just an inconvenience. Many people have big accidents or are crippled in war and this is not the case. Do not get depressed or let fear overtake you. You have more to live for. I had the radioactive seeds and they failed. If I had to do it again, I would’ve had my prostate removed then. As it is, I’m going to have it removed next week and it will be far more complicated than if I did it the first time. Have you been treated yet and if so, how are you doing?
Thanks, Mark. I have just been diagnosed with prostate cancer and have an appointment to see a surgeon next week. I checked on the site for British Cancer surgeons and he has a good reputation with good outcomes. Your experience has given me great hope even though it is now 6 years old. If I am accepted for surgery it will be robotic so I hope for the best with just one night in hospital. I certainly don't want to go down the hormone/radiation road which will take 18 months of treatment according the Oncology Consultant I saw this week. I want this evil thing out of my body as quickly and cleanly as possible. Thanks again. Graham.

I just had the same surgery on 8/19/19. Your videos have helped me tremendously. Thank you. Surgery was at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia. I am at 36 hrs and this video is right on. I will be following your further days as I progress. Again thank you.

I arrived at Parkwest Surgery Center in Knoxville at 9 am, surgery several hours later, discharged and family drove me home around 5:30 pm. Climbed two flights of stairs at home with no problem. Took five days to fully get the gas out of my shoulders.

I was diagnosed about a month ago with Stage II prostate cancer and am scheduled for the same surgery you had in 5 days.
I am slightly to moderately stressed (it goes up as I get closer to the DAY) but watching your videos definitely help tone it down….the stress that is.

I had my surgery a week ago. The first 24 hours you are still under the anesthesia. After that I started feeling the pain of the surgery. My doctor provided me with a morphine hand held pump. This device gave me instant relive for the pain. My abdominal area felt like i had two tight belts around it. On the 2 day I was given a liquid diet. I had pain in my intestines as they reflated . After the 4 day I was released from the hospital. It was a ruff. Today is 7 days later and I feel normal. I am 62.
Straight after surgery I felt fine, a couple days later I was beginning to feel like I’d done ten rounds with Mike Tyson. They give you pain medication for a reason, use it when you need to. As Mark mentions the gas they fill you with is initially the most uncomfortable, moving to the shoulders when you stand and to the abdominal area when you lay down as you’d expect an air bubble to do. It’s taken roughly five days to shake that off. For me the most difficult is regaining bowel movement, this may well be my own limited diet but I rushed to higher fibre in an attempt to get things moving and suffered considerable pain passing stools as a result. Stick to low fibre for as long as it takes so as not to put the repairs to the bowel at risk and take the laxatives on offer. I’m on day eight now and feeling much improved, my main complication has come from varicose veins on my right leg causing discomfort from the night bag straps. We’re all different and our ‘journey’ will be too. I’m 65 and living in the UK. People are welcome to ask any questions and I’ll do my best to answer.

Thank you for sharing I’m also doing the surgery it’s February 2023 I’m 51 prostate cancer score 4+4=8 still contained. Hopefully will get done by March it as been a scary 5 months of diagnosis until they found out did not spread outside the prostate. i just got a 4+4 TOO AND am scared shitless meet with urologist monday dont no fi they will say radiation or removal and where do I go uggggg and will i be able to handle the healing pain so scared

Many thanks for these videos! My surgery is one week from today. I am 55 and live in Calgary, Canada. My surgeon (who trained at Johns Hopkins and is well renowned here in Canada) is quite optimistic in terms of my long-term prognosis. However, he mentioned that my prostate is on the smaller side which apparently makes the surgery a bit trickier than if it was larger. Plus, one of my Gleason scores is 4+3 and contained an element that my doctor indicated meant that it was more aggressive in nature than the average 4+3. So those two factors have me a bit worried, but all in all I am optimistic and I’m very grateful for your videos that have helped me prepare mentally and emotionally. Thank you so much!
Glad to heard you doing good, I just have similar surgery, my prostate had been remove and I am 51 as well. I am now almost 3 weeks and I am having my first visit to my physiotherapist next week.
One of the things the still a bit uncorfortable is the use of men pads for the pee dripping, is not to bad now but days after removing the cataret, I hope that will be stop with time and the exercise.

Mark's Prostate Cancer Experience . it went good. I'm pretty sore right now at home. meds are helping. This catheter is annoying though :-) I'll check out that page. Your videos really helped me know what to expect so thank you!
March 2018: I'm a normal Kansas guy employed as a barber. 5'10" 210 pounds...I drink beer, eat beef jerky, pickled eggs and I can walk 2 miles no problem. So pretty much I'm a normal midwest fellow.
I'm 59 and my PSA had bounced to 4.0. Gleason 4+3 on biopsy. (that's another thing....the biopsy is painless if the doctor numbs it first. Numbing shots were a little startling but I was in Walmart walking 20 minutes later) Topeka Kansas Dr. Branstead. He prescribed .5 Valium and .75 Hydrocodone to be taken 40 minutes before procedure. Please get yours done the same way. Getting my teeth cleaned is more annoying than a prostate biopsy!

Friday - March 9th Surgery
Saturday - March 10th Home that afternoon
Wednesday - March 21st Catheter Removal
Saturday - March 24th Raquette ball and bowling (and beer)
TOTAL bladder control at the time of Catheter removal. No drops when coughing, sneezing, jumping or sleeping. Sexual functions are better than before surgery.
The living room couch is the best overnight sleeping situation when hooking up to the large piss bag is a must! Catheter is a real annoyance and the tube in your pecker is the size of your little finger! Yes its that big!
During the day I did not use any piss bag....I just plugged the hose and every hour I'd remove the plug and drain. I did use Anbesol toothache medicine to numb the tip of my penis. That helped a bunch. No pain on stomach wounds. A little bleeding but no pain at all.
No fear...Looking back I wonder why I was all scared. Just get it done. I probably have more energy now because I don't get up 4 times a night to piss. Once and sometimes none.
Nothing to fear guys....I got my surgery at KU Med. The best in the nation!

@dappa311 All good. I kind of forgot I even had the surgery. No issues. My wife said I need to quit catapulting rocks onto the neighbors roof using my spring loaded.....well....you can guess on that. Rick. 64 and better than ever.

Mark, thanks for the video. It's a great public service! I'm 24 hrs past and hearing what you'd gone through at 24, 48 hours, and down the road answers a lot of questions that come up, and you just don't always want to bugging the surgeon and feel like a pain in the butt, regardless of how patient he is. I'm sure much of your results can be attributed to your age and condition at the time of surgery. I was in pretty good shape to begin with for my 67 years and started Kegals as soon as I knew I was going the surgery route, and with 6 weeks to go, doubled down on the core exercises, cut out beer, and got my body fat down from 14% to 12%. My surgeon said it made things much easier for both of us.

Mark, I too got my GS6 (3+3) prostrate removed about 10 days back and I too feel that all the inconvenience and some pain is a very good bargain to remain cancer free
With Gleason 3+3, I sometimes will recommend active surveillance, as your cancer could be ultra slow moving. But, as you are now on the "other side", you can move forward without the worry of cancer being there! I wish you the best.

I am just 24 hours after my surgery having my prostate removed the draining has cleard but my testis is swollen I still have the catheter in me till.next Friday can anyone tell me why they are swollen I returned. to the Er yesterday and the urology told me it's common after the surgery balls to be swollen can anyone give me advice you can email me at gearstanley@yahoo.com thank you very much 😄

I am 65 and have Gleason 7 prostate cancer. I have been traveling to Vanderbilt University Hospital because they are a prostate cancer center of excellence. I live about three hours from Vanderbilt. My doctor says I am border line treatment so I am currently doing active surveillance. I anticipate I will within the next year have to make a treatment decision: surgery or radiation. I am currently leaning toward surgery. Your videos have been very helpful, but I must say I am scared to death over both treatment options.
Blake, at Gleason 7 I may suggest you give treatment a second look. I would never rush into treatment, but at the same time, at your Gleason you may want to start looking at a way to stop the growth before it gets further along.

I am 50 and was disnoised with prostate cancer and on planning on getting it removed with robotic surgery
Now tell us how good you felt walking around your home after the drugs were worn off. I thought it was going to be just fine. 2 days later I feel worse😂. I passed lots of gas last night. I'll push through though. Thanks for sharing your story.

Mark, how long was it before you could fly back to Florida? Did you have to stay in Ny for very long?
My surgery is in the middle of December. According to my doctor, there is a three day hospital stay and catheter remains in for two weeks. I wonder why the difference? Very nervous because this is major surgery but your videos help. Thanks brother.

Thanks for sharing your story it really sheds some light on what’s to come I’m scheduled for my surgery in a few weeks I’m 51 the same has you when you had your procedure done and a course I’m nervous and my mind has been running because I don’t know what my sexual life will be afterwards I know it’s important to have the cancer removed but I’m very nervous about what type of life will I have afterwards I know everyone story and situation isn’t the same but if you are will to open up about your experience after the surgery and all system are go I would like to hear about it please. Or anyone else who’s gone through this procedure

@@dappa311 Hi Dappa311 I’m good after going through my surgery I’m feeling good still some challenges I have to over come I also had to do 35 treatments of radiation and I’m leaking a lot since going through that treatment and no erection at all even with meds to help I was a year in September I haven’t given up yet.

@@rolankelly9683 Well I have to do a Biopsy more than likely, my PSA was 3.3 and free PSA was low, so more than likely if it is cancer I may have to remove it. I have been racking my brain about this ever since I was referred to a Urologist and realsized I may be in a tough situation that I didn't see coming.
If it is Cancer I wanna make the infected organ is removed so It can't spawn up again, that is my thinking.
I am also thinking about the sexual side effect and don't want to be impotent for the rest of my days.
But I have two small kids, 11 years old and my biggest fear is not being around for them, so if my luck of the draw is cancer of the prostate , I rather just get rid of it, I don't want to go through this again later on in life ; nor do I want to risk getting cancer again anywhere else from radiation.
It's tough and I am scared to be honest.
@@dappa311 I think you will be just fine I have 6 yrs in you and I know that feeling all to well and my two kids is the reason I went thru the surgery at that time my PSA was 38 which is crazy high. With your numbers I don’t feel you have a lot to worry about I will say this not sure what area you are in I wish had did proton therapy for a few reason ED is not an option with proton therapy and it’s can get rid of all the cancer. Depending on your results from you biopsy that’s an option you could make also because u have a lot of years left in the tank and we love our kids but being depressed is not good either and that’s where I’m at when it comes to the ED part of things I would ask you to reach out to NIH facility they have stuff that can help u that a lot of doctors can’t offer I wish I had known this first before I went with my procedure because I never would’ve done it to be honest.. A friend of mine went to NIH they gave him some pills to take for 5 months when he went back the cancer was gone so it’s stuff out here to help us we just have to do the research so don’t rush to have the surgery look at all your option so u can still enjoy life and have a sex life because when that’s over it’s a whole different cloud over your head. I will pray for you and it will be ok bro..

Mark, I'm happy for you that things apparently went well. Did you have a radical prostatecetomy? I ask because I had one 4 days ago (8/7/17), and today was the first day I've been able to function at all without narcotic-strength painkillers.

I'm on day 3 and the pain of moving around is now tolerable, but not easy. Just using Tylenol as I don't want the constipation that's associated with narcotics.
radical prostatectomy is no big deal, overnight stay, bit of discomfort then you are on your way. I still have PSA tests every year.
