- Join me for a walk around the proud maritime city of Hull, home to a striking range of history from the remnants of its thriving docks and medieval walls to spectacular 21st century architecture as part of the city centre's regeneration.

I'm from Hull. Others have mentioned its 'bad reputation'. I would say that the reputation is not entirely unfounded. It has suffered massively over the years from lack of investment (although the City of Culture did help in that regard) and high unemployment. The employment we enjoy tends to be on average on the lower end of the wage scale. What this video doesn't show is the deprivation of even the city centre, never mind the suburbs. That all said, Hull genuinely does have some redeeming places and I have to say, I have always found its history fascinating, which this video does an excellent job of touching on. Some beautiful spots include the Museum Quarter, Marina and Humber Street. It is also one of the friendliest cities in the UK. There is no denying that Hull has more lumps and bumps than other cities, but you also have to note that all cities do have those and Hull does have those redeeming areas as well.
That was a great walk across a great, great maririme, historic city. Thank you very much
Great video, although the museums are touched on briefly here they are well worth further exploration ( all free entry ) especially when taken in as part of the ' fish trail ' which encompasses a lot of this walk. The fish on the trail are brass plaques of all the creatures that have been caught by hull trawlers over the years, once again a great video showing my much maligned city in a positive light !
There is a common tale about the statue of 'King Billy'; every night at midnight he gets off his horse and goes for a pint in the king William pub opposite!

I didn't have a proper perception of what Hull looked like. The waterfront area and old town are looking really great. Some fantastic architecture and parks and extensive regeneration. However, I hope the attention brought by the city of culture title in 2017 will continue. Hope all those bars and arcades can be enjoyed and maintained. This has made we want to visit. Thanks.

Hull has a bad reputation but looks lovely to me. I’ve just moved to Yorkshire so I’m going to check it out soon.
The area in the video is the very best part of Hull to be fair.
I wouldnt bother , go somewhere else not a nice place , used to be a lovely clean bright city before, brilliant fashion shops cafe bars , now its dismal dirty and yuki

@@lordflashheart8153 outside England there are many nice places.Italy , Spain , Greece , Bulgaria , Turkey.There are some in England aswell but not so many. I have been in Maidstone, Kent and it is far better there. I know the south is better in general but still...

That was interesting, thank you. I only lived in Hull for the 3 years of my degree from 1990. Most of the locations you walked were unknown to me. A night club called The Waterfront probably as close as I got to water unless it was shopping in Princes Quay.

Hull isn’t a place you pass through going to somewhere else you have to seek it out and your video did that fine, I’ve only been there 3 times but my dad knew it well.
In WW2 he served on the escort destroyer HMS Icarus and Hull was one of the ports where his ship docked along with Liverpool, Glasgow, Portsmouth and Scapa Flow while on Atlantic and Russian convoys as well at Operation Harpoon and Pedestal to relieve Malta and in 1941 while Icarus was undergoing a refit in Hull he got a special licence and married my mum who he had been courting 3 years.
When dad got his first car, a 1949 Ford Prefect, in the Suez Crisis of 1956 he later drove us the see King George the Fifth docks where they docked.
In the heady days of Usenet in the late 1990’s to 2010’s uk.local.yorkshire had many Cons (conventions), where Yorkies got together from all over Britain and once a year (Global Con) from as far apart as Hong Kong, America, Netherlands and Italy to meet, eat a curry and drink far too much real ale, a local Con was held in Hull around the Old Town with a visit to the magnificent Victorian underground toilets, you missed them, although I’m not sure they are still there.
More recently we visited the great Deep with our first granddaughter, had a picnic in the grounds and spent the time dispatching wasps while eating our sandwiches.
Victoria square toilets are still there but have been locked up for years, probably 15 or more from memory. I have heard that they are talking about reopening them, but we will see.

Please don't take everything in this video as being TRUE, it is full of missinformation, and POOR/LAZY research. We only had ONE dock in 1778. The Dock which opened on the 22nd of September 1778. We (Hull) do not get a second dock until the early 1800s' when Humber Dock opens in 1829 (NOT BUIT in as this guy says in this video)

The tall Wilberforce monument was originally between Victoria square where you started and Queens dock where you finished near the dock office.
Great video but missed out Blaydes House down High Street the home of an important ship building family who built the famous 'Bounty', as I say great video though 😀👍
Yes, and the Blaydes married into the Haworth family. They lived at Hull Bank house later called Haworth Hall. The last Haworth to legally own the Cottingham Estates, was Rear Admiral Sir Francis Fitzgerald Haworth-Booth KCMG, Assistant Director of Naval Intelligence. He registerd a Principal Vesting Deed at Beverley on 9 March 1926 as the owner of the estate. It was all sold by mistake or fraud in 1932, and F F Haworth-Booth died Intestate in February 1935. This is why Hull is falling apart now. After the Estate was sold, it was all covered up by the solicitors. Wilberforce Chambers website, history page says that the solicitors and barristers were scandalously dishonest in Hull at that time. Hull Corporation was sold at the same time. There is a Crown Court case about it, coming soon.

Just an observation regarding William Wilberforce statue overlooking Queens gardens. This was not it's original location. Great video though, never seen the place I live look so tidy tbh 😊
Does anyone know if the sticker shop is still at the top of Princes Quay? I was hoping the video would explore this, although it was an excellent video nevertheless.
You talk about change to the fruit market area, even from when this was filmed (June 2021) to today (June 2022), the area is changed even more

Hull has been slowly going down since I was a boy in the 50's but its still there trying to get better and not having seen it for 7 years it is looking much better, what people are doing is another thing

First of all Hull's "Docks" did not open in 1778, and they were not the biggest in England whatsoever. Fact! What you ought to have said is Hull's frist dock opened in 1778, Hull only had ONE dock in 1778, and that was simply known or called The Dock, and it opened on the 22nd of September 1778. With the Legal Quay opened on the South side of The Dock the following year. We did not get a second dock until 1809, when Humber Dock opened, some 31 years after The Dock opened. Humber Dock was later joined to "The Old Dock" (as it was then known after Humber Dock came along.) in 1829 by Junction Dock. Hull's first dock simply known as The Dock was for a while after it opened in 1778, the biggest dock in England outside London!
While I'm sure the author of this video is grateful for the corrections, your response could have been a little more respectful toward the overall effort of what is an excellent free resource. Maybe, you might post your effort so that we can critique them?

Visited Hull as a tourist few months ago, following very similar walking route. Interesting mix of old buildings showing off the city’s Victorian (and earlier) wealth, plus evidence of millions being poured in by the EU and during the City Of Culture year, all mixed with today’s underlying poverty and dilapidation (note the almost completely empty Princes Quay shopping centre monstrosity). Apparently Hull is now one of the biggest consumers, per capita, of the welfare state. And yes, astonishing the Black Boy pub (which we visited - excellent log fire snug at the front) hasn’t had been forced by the liberal-elites to change its *racist* name.
They put a cinema on the top deck of Prinny Quay shopping centre and it ruined it, top deck had lots of little shops and arcades and cafes and with Hull been right on the river and it being freezing blowing a gale for 8 months of the year it brought in people just to have a wander round. Now people just pull into the carpark on the top deck where the cinema is get out and watch a film then get straight back in their cars and drive off. The people who run it havent got a clue, thats 3 cinemas in the city centre that we have and a 4th on Kingswood, id rather they tear down St Stephens its sucked the life out of Prinny Quay and Whitefriargate and the old town, whenever there is an article in hull daily fail about top deck everyone says the same they hate St Stephens and want top deck back...
Oh and the marina was unbelievable on bank holidays before the council revoked all the licences on majority of the bars on there, people used to come from far and wide for the bank holidays, stag do's from Newcastle they loved it them mad geordies, then it died for like 15 years before they got that city of culture crap which ruined the city to be honest id a rather we never won and didnt get the investment, the amount of drug addicts that thing brought was on another level, full of drug addict beggars on the streets, its never got better from it the town centre now is full of dirty scumbag drug addicts all thanks to that pathetic city of culture crap...

It's a shame the the Hull people have a reputation for being lazy,work shy and sticky fingered. It is acity run by organized crime which include the " usual suspects", councillors and police. Organized crime won't like my comments because the think they have the place and area stitched up. In breeding in Hull is a major problem and Hull is used by the international scientific to study the effects of in breeding on a population. Hull has cheap real estate and is a net exporter of cannibis. Shopping is poor( owing to gangs of shop lifters stripping shops of goods ,like ravernous locusts) and jobs are scare owing to a negative worth ethic. Companies leave and set up their businesses in areas where workin hard is a virtue.
