after watching this several times over the past few years, I've noticed something really interesting, and I think it changes the meaning of the video from one of belonging to one of forgiveness (which very much go hand in hand). when they first enter the building, above the door are four stars, suggesting that there were originally four friends, before they entered the building this time. to the right is a drawing of the four of them titled bffs, but the white haired girl is scribbled out in red. also, at the end of the song when we see the four stars on the window, the lightest one (representing the white haired girl) has a very faint outline behind it, as if there was a star there previously that could not be washed off all the way. my best guess is that something happened and she left the friend group, but has now come back and rediscovered all the good times she had with her friends. despite what happened in the past, your true friends will always accept you and help you find where you belong.

i think the cutest thing about this is that the kids arent upset at her for forgetting about them, they're just excited to have her back. i feel like most falling-out friendships dont react like that.

i like the subtle detail of the black haired girl's star being on the back of her neck. unlike the other guys having it someplace more obvious, it's so easily covered by her hair. makes sense given how mature and uptight she looks, and with the way she acts as a leader to the group. but she really is a kid at heart.

Just because the girls are visibly less excited when they get older doesn't mean being with the boys is the default. Being comfortable and being friends is the default, I don't think it's a state of being that boys own. It's just one society has given them the freedom to hold onto. Girls have a lot more pressure put on them, hence the girls who is guarded and wears dark makeup. She isn't like that because "that's just how girls become." They become that way because of awful societal pressures placed on them. There are many.

The music video plays on the theme of friendship. The stars in each of them represent their bond. The white haired girl didn't have one because she "forgot". But once she starts hanging out with her old friends again she regains the "lost" memories as well as her star. The moral is no matter what happens, you can never forget the bonds you created with your childhood friends, as they made you the person you are today.
There's always one big brain explaining these music videos, gotta love it....

man I didn't even notice the stars on them until the end, and now it kinda makes sense to me-
The stars represent their friendship together, the one girl with the white hair has drifted away from them, which is why she has no star in the beginning. So they go back to this seemingly abandoned place, where they use to have fun together and draw with spray paint as kids. When they all try to have fun spray painting again, she seems to enjoy it but doesn't fully remember/understand (explaining the sad face she draws on the wall.) Once they remind her of the fun they all use to have as kids, by sitting her down on this frog plushie and they do the entering into "knighthood" motion with the stick, essentially bringing her back into the group. She remembers and gains her star back; symbolizing that she's reconnected with them. They may be older teens/adults now, but still value their memories together as friends c:

after 3 months, i realized that the slow motion that starts in 2:16 may also symbolize how time seems to move slower as a kid, since you're just having fun and not worried to look what time it is, and now I always have to look on the watch, pay attention to the calendar, and it seems like years are just flying by and i'm not making good use of them.

Hearing this song made me notice how uneventful my childhood was. I'm almost an adult now and I barely remember any of it. I often found myself envious of others who are still in contact with their childhood friends, those who can say "I miss my childhood." juxtaposed to my "I missed it." If I could go back, I'd stop stressing myself over the littlest things, like grades. I can remember staring outside of the window doing my homework, studying, while the others were running around playing. Memories with friends can last you a lifetime but good grades only give you a headache and expectations that weren't yours. Now I just feel like a piece of me is missing, I feel like a building with a shaky foundation. Don't let your children grow up to be like me, let them go outside, socialize, and play. Let them be curious, let them surround themselves with peers, let them make mistakes, and let them build the person they want to be.
I feel you man, I've gained awareness about how lack luster my childhood is in an early age. It made me really depressed how I can't have that one friend to talk to because I didn't make any growing up. Now I regret not changing myself to be more likeable as my last teenage year slips past me.

i feel the totally opposite, im thankfull for having a childhood with minimal problems, i never harmed anyone and nobody ever harmed me, it was all good slow smooth fun until the end where i had to decide to be what i want to be, and to make a change in the world. even though im stressed as hell past military college, facing that that wasnt my destiny and neither flying ( it just got too expensive and unreacheable) , im trying to work and study to keep all the good habits and friends i made along the way.
in the end, we have to agree, that after this quarantine, we need to keep our good friends closer, and make a future not to remember, but to relive and make new good times.

In order to see your "lack luster" childhood in a more positive light, be grateful that it wasn't full of disheartening and traumatic events, and that in the end, you were born in a much better situation than the grand percentage of the population born in poverty, abusive environments, etc. This helps me cope because I also can't remember much of my childhood with other enough to feel nostalgic. i never hung out at friends' houses and they never came to mine

Found this song when I was 14, I turned 18 a month ago and this was the first thing I watched. This song and video never fails to make me feel like a kid again, I always feel my childhood memories & great times from the last 4 years rush in as they turn into kids. Gonna miss being a minor.

Not the best with remembering things, but it was fun! Mainly relaxed and then went on a trip to visit family! One of the main memories I had was riding on a jet ski with my uncle and cousin, only for it to tip over and we had to get brought back to shore by rich people in their passing by yacht.
(I kinda think rich people are weird now cause of how they acted on the way back. They were kinda funny tho)

Most of the time with music videos you tend to stop actually watching the video after enough time, especially if you've got a playlist you're going through, but I can't help but drop whatever I'm doing just to enjoy this one whenever it comes on. There's so much "happy" in this video, I can feel it wash over me every time "IT'S SUMMER TIME" hits, seeing everyone with those beautiful expressions and emotions, thank you for this beautiful experience.
I feel like the vid represents how we still are children inside. A lot of us get caught up in growing up that when we finally take a moment to play again, we feel like little kids. This to me is an old friend coming back to town and all of her friends expect her to have changed. But when she closes her eyes and joins their little ritual, its the sign they were waiting for that even though she was gone and grown, she hadn’t lost that childish heart. The song really embraces nostalgia and the melancholy of growing up.
What a nice video to compliment a nice song. I see a message about, no matter who you are or how old you get, you never have to let go of your childhood. It’s a beautiful thing. Keep up the good work.

The theory that she lost her memory really makes sense because when she gets her star back, she sees them all as she knew them as kids; happy, youthful, and even wearing different clothes (and her clothes change too). I love how in that final scene with the stars painted on the window, one of them is brighter than the rest, like it was just recently put there. And, there's a smudged outline of a star where it is like the star was scrubbed off, and yet it was put back up just like how the friendship was brought back between all of them.
This song and it's video will never stop being one of the most nostalgic things I have ever seen.

2024 here! I'm discovering a lot of your songs recently and they are so emotional and full of life, i can't thank you guys enough for your music, they make me happy and reminiscent at the same time.
I love how they all burst in happiness when she get her star back, like when you reunite with your friend after a really long time
They also go back to being kids again, in case you didn't catch that as well. :D
Don't think there is a deeper meaning like some theorists here, I think it's just the feeling of being in a good friend group where you can be yourself.

The past videos always have some complex, intricate theories behind them, and I love reading them, they're always so interesting. But I think the story behind this one is rather simple. Teens at the end of summer remembering the magic of being a child. The new initiate is a new friend, and they're seeing if she still retains the child inside of her. Which she does. A time before responsibilities such as school, or work, there was just fun. The innocence of a child. Before the world exposes them to the harshness of reality. Those are the days I miss the most.
I think she's an old friend who left them for some reason. See at the end how there is a fading out star behind the new one?

I love how all these music videos and songs have themes revolving around important things in life. In The Wolf it was about your problems building up until you can't bear it anymore, and that the longer you wait to face them, the more harmful and problematic they become. In Summer Nights, its about friendship and finding out where you belong, and that true bonds will never break.
I kept expecting this to pull a dye fantasy and get dark but nah, so pure.

If u look closely, when the girl gets her star they grow younger so I believe what happend is they all reunited there but the white haired girl never really stayed in touch which was why she was scribbled out of a picture of all 4 of them with the words BFF when they enter the building it’s because she was no longer there best friend until that moment but when she remembered all the fun she got her star again which showed there all reunited again
FACTS. That’s why you can see 4 stars already in the clubhouse they have at the end.
Also, in that moment their clothes changes too. So, it's like they come back to another time.

I feel that the girl in Black is kind of the group leader, as she is seen guiding the others with whistle. so I feel that the star on her neck or spine indicates that she supports everyone in the group. literally the spine of the group

I love how they start spray painting the walls the same color yellow it was when they were kids. If that's their old school, the walls and everything faded or whatever so they tried to bring the color back.

I miss this feeling... all my friends got away from me because of time and place we belong. The teenager transition in my has been pretty painful... but i'm glad i found this amazing song. It conforted me for now since i discovered it... thank you mr. Siamés
I really enjoy the detail that when they're kids, the animation is in slow motion, and as adults/teens, the animation goes back to normal speed. Things go by so much faster as an adult when you're stressed about your time, but as a kid, you have no worries and the joy and childhood ignorance makes time last forever.

This song takes me back to my first couple of years in the Navy. Going out and raising hell like a junior enlisted should. Sneaking girls into the barracks at 3:am. Going from the smokepit at 1 a.m. to a tent and booze and beach by 3 because none of us had any REAL responsibilities yet. Shit was an adventure and a half, and where i can say. I finally found myself and grew up.
Every time I think of those friends and the confidence they gave me. I have nothing but graditude and a smile on my face.

I don't if anyone already pointed out this but the star of the white haired girl is more exposed than the other friends's stars. It probably means that she was more open about their friendship than the rest of them, but still forgot it and had to be remembered of it.

Summer 2023 and this song still makes me feel as good as it did when it first came out 💪
For me, there's so much depth in the expressions of the blonde haired girl. The way that when the elaborate ritual is going on, she's glancing around, playing along and humoring them but not really understanding... and then finally, when the magic (real or imagined) begins, she closes her eyes and has her "ah-hah" moment. And it's made so poignant as well by the slightly prickly vulnerability in the dark-haired girl's expressions. It's not until the blonde girl is back in the group again that she lets herself smile and laugh, because she doesn't dare to let her guard down until the "ritual"--the reigniting of the friendship--is complete.
Sorry I just love this video so much, the character animation and the art direction have a real understated depth

I guess I finally found the song I will cherish for the rest of my life. It somehow manages to perfectly capture the rare happy and carefree feeling I get once every few months. I've been severely depressed my entire adult life and even though there is no cure for my case, this is song is incredibly comforting. I have never cried so much because of a song and I didn't even watch the video at first! 😭❤️
