We absolutely love Heff and the work he did with our behavioral issue husky Nova, what an amazing trainer. He really understands dogs, how they feel, and how they think. Can't thank him enough for the work he did and for the training he did with us.
Glad you still at it - my old mentor would always say “your first dog bite will determine your career”, seen lot of people quit after bruising - you’re real dog man. 💯
@@laurahamilton5388 clearly you never smoked weed a day in your life. Plus this dude and many like them clean up peoples messes like yours all the time. I’d love to see and hear references with how many dogs you have personally worked and saved from being put down by training them. Without that your slander is just that.
He explained exactly why it happened. Mistakes were made, lesson learned. Sounds like now they're more careful. Working with live animals, things happen. As dog professionals, of course, you try to prevent bites, always! BUT you WILL get bit eventually. It's just part of the job, in the long run.
I’ve taken a few bites too as I was learning. Worst was actually a Golden Retriever!! The owner neglected to tell us he redirected when corrected. So much so they wore firefighter gloves when working with him. I learned to treat every dog as an issue until the dog proved otherwise.
Hearing these stories just makes me appreciate my GSD so much. Yes he is dog reactive and will bark and pull when he sees a dog which is why i started watching these videos and working with him. HOWEVER i got him at 1 year old and i never once was worried about him biting me or any other person for the last 6 years ive had him. Ill give him hugs and my face will be right next to him and he will get up on my bed while i am laying down and walk toward my face and the biggest worry i got is him licking me in the eye or on the mouth. I love my dog.
I have been working with owners and their dogs for 50 years. Yes several bites in that time. WORST bit ever was last year, bit in the boob (I am a 69 yr old woman). To long a story to go into. But the worst thing that irritates me is people are not 100% up front about the problem. Public needs to understand that we as trainers need to know every little detail about the dog. You (the owner of these aggressive dogs) are risking our lives. I still continue to work with people and their dogs, but I ask even more questions now than before my bit. Thank You Shield for posting this video.
I've been to a working kennels that would overlook behavioral instabilities if a dog can certify too. So it isn't just pet owners that will be dishonest with the problem.
What is the correct thing to do when dog bites you like that what was your response to the dog. I always imagined this scenerio and i think the correct action is to severely punish the dog ie beat the living shit out of him tbh id be so pissed i am not sure i could control my emotions especially if he did some real damage to me. Id make sure it never ever even crossed his mind to bite me tbh if the bite was bad enough the vet wouldnt have to put the dog dow id put him down my self in that moment. I may be wrong but i think alot of times the dogs develope these issues because when they were young and they bit someone nothing happens to them so they just start thinking that they can do this without any consequences.
@@15xgg80 Imo, it would depend a lot on where the dog comes from as in why he bites. Just reacting and beating it up could fix it, but it could also completely destroy any chance of rehabilitating a dog. If the dog is over confident and bites to be the boss.. getting his ass whooped might change his mind, but if the biting is fearbased, it will not help at all. Keeping your cool is essential, not just as to how you react to the dog, but also as to how you get yourself out of it with as little damage to yourself as possible. Most young dogs will nip and playbite, but become far more careful as they mature. No punishment is needed for this to happen, it can be as simple as stop playing the moment it nips too hard, or even nips at all. And yelp.. to show it it hurts when it does that. Aka, nipping too hard has a consequence, but not a punishment.
The behavioral approach that he uses was so clear, even the way he described the whole bite incident was layed out in clear, specific behavioral chain. So glad y'all are willing to take on a dog like that. Kudos.
What a great video. Heff is ‘The Man’ great respect for his work ethic 👌and his attitude towards helping aggressive dogs like the one that injured him .please keep doing what your doing for dog owners at shield🥰
Wow! I love this guy! What inspiration. I have taken two bad hits from dogs in the past couple of years and people questioned my sanity for getting right back in the saddle. I didn’t question myself until they questioned me. I had to move past their questioning to move forward. Thank goodness I did!
Great insight and thanks for sharing. I will say it is great that the audience gets to see more of your team and hear their stories, I know you'll are swamped with work just wanted to say its great to hear from them too. Love the work you guys do and always learn so much from it.
As an ACO, not shocked by the breed mix at all. Thank you for sharing the story. Glad you're okay. I definitely have scars. lol I wouldn't change a thing.
Yup alot of these channels that even have 1 million + subscribers i watched them and i could sense they were full of bs but the second i started watching his channel i sensed right away this guy knows what he is talking about it and he doesnt sugercoat anything or try to be cute he tells it like it is and i love that. Have not watched a single dog trainer after him just cant.
kudos to the trainer for not throwing in the towel. The kindest thing they could have done for this dog would've been to put him down. How can the owners live with not knowing how the dog is being treated (it's a different country and ppl treat dogs very differently over there), or how many ppl this dog will continue to harm or worse - I wouldn't be able to sleep at night.
My worst bite was from a lab who was a washed seeing eye dog...I corrected him for rough play with another dog and that boy came for my life! Thankfully I was able to get the upper hand (and some assistance from my colleagues) and walked away with just cuts and bruises but I saw pure rage in his eyes.
So glad about this video! My father gave me the trait and before he died made sure of it "f*ck it, it is what it is, move on shit happens" Furthermore; crushes are so awful good to see he made peace.
Man I give so much respect to this man. I recently just had finger surgery because my dog lunged towards a pack of coyotes approaching and his weight and the leash snapped my fingers breaking two of them, one so badly that it needed surgery and will always be a little crooked. That said, while all fingers are important, thumb is extremely important for picking things up opening things etc. I hope he learns how to manage without part of his thumb because that is a huge obstacle. More power to him and I hope he has a good physical therapist and can adapt
I'm also so glad you guys talked about the dog. I do feel terribly for the dog and I actually have a dog similar to this. A Cocker spaniel. They are crazy. Way too inbred. I can handle Louie, he actually was returned to the breeder and I adopted him and I know exactly why he was returned. I have two other wonderful dogs that are very stable open happy just ideal temperaments. But Louie we call him Looney Louie. I was tell people to be careful with him and I mainly handle him.. my preferred breeds are working line German shepherds, X Malinois and for small dogs, miniature American Eskimos because they are not annoying little ankle biters. Louie is an exception and he's very lucky he has me as an owner otherwise he would have been put down long ago
Thanks for the video. It helps me to understand the dangerous dog I used to have. She was obedient 99 % of the time, but that other 1% , look out! The last bite I got was for telling her to get out of the car and come in the house. I gave a little tug on the lead and she came flying out like Cujo, WTF. she latched onto my arm and shook it. I guess she really didnt want to come in the house! lol. In the end, I decided that even if I was willing to live with a dog like that, I could not in good conscience put other people at risk..... A week ago I got a Golden Retriever puppy, thinking Id never have the problems I had with the Malinois/GSD rescue mix I had before. Hopefully good breeding and proper socialization will ensure I get a good buddy.
Oof. My friend got her thumb severed by a Malinois about 2 years ago. The bone in the x-ray looked like glass shards. It didn't come off completely and it's healed up now.
Glad you are ok! My gsd, 3 yrs old spayed female, rescource guards me from my daughter and husband. How do I stop this? She will come from another room growling when she hears my husband enter the room I am in. What is weird is it is so much worse as it gets dark outside! We have to crate her when other people come over. Please, any advise would be great!
It's much like working with horse, at some point your gonna get bit, kicked & falling off is a matter of when not if. I take these are all adult dogs (2+) & not puppies anymore. Other than when my dogs have been pups, the only dogs that have bit me have all been labs (black one & red one).
i have a question, what if your dog gets attacked in your home and because scared, sad, and training is off because of the attacked. could you do a video on that
I almost lost my thumb in a work accident. I completely crushed the end and twisted it mostly off. I went to the ER and they sewed it back on and put pins in it. Next day went to a a specialist who had to redo everything and put in new pins.
Question relating to your online reactive dog course. Does it not take real exposure in a controlled environment, with other dogs, handlers and situations as a true test in training a reactive dog? Thanks.
I've taken the course. You can do it around your neighborhood as long as the trigger is around, whether that's a dog, bike, car, etc. You need to proof your dog in all contexts to make sure they're better.
