Pilot is his job, aka he is a navigator, thats what a PILOT is on a ship back then. In Japanese, Pilot = ANJIN, aka the title of the episode.
Which is funny cause usually the first episode of any TV show is called PILOT EPISODE, and this one episode is literally called PILOT in Japanese, aka ANJIN.

😂😂 maybe we are just jealous! It just seems a bit forced especially when he’s yelling hahaha. Definitely grew to like him a lot more in the second episode! Our reaction to that will be available at midnight tonight! - Andrew

Last Samurai is set during the END of the last shogun dynasty of Japan.

Omi decapitated the peasant who was crossing himself in front of Blackthorn because he ordered them to get out of the way and back off and he did not listen. Granted, to our modern sensibilities killing someone for something so slight is over the top, but in feudal Japan respect and loyalty to your higher ups was one of the most important aspects of daily life.

I get it, and I am assuming this is to set up an example that the low class people need to show respect and obey.

Non Spoiler explanation if you seen 2 eps:
-Story is a novel where the author basically took a REAL LIFE story but change everyone names... So Toranaga, Blackthorne, Rodriguez, etc... are all real people with a different name (If you want their real name, just use Wikipedia Shogun 2024 and avoid reading the plot.)
-This part of Japanese history mixed with a bunch of other histories in Japan is actually what Oda used for one piece's Wano arc. (Fun Fact)
-5 Reagents safeguarding Japan until The Taiko's son old enough to rule himself.
-Toranaga is actually the biggest POWER in Japan at this time, but he would lose to the other 4 if they join forces, so thats why he playing smart.
-At this time in history, nobody in Europe knows Japan exist except for the Portugeuse, who basically LIE to the japanese saying they are the ONLY European country to basically get to trade japan exclusively.
-In Europe at this time, Christians are divided into two groups: Protestant and Catholics (technically there is a third christian group but guess they arent involved), and these 2 groups hate each other alot. And each european country has their own religion group, so they fight each other.... example: France is Catholic and Sweden would be Protestant.... so they hate each other.
-At this time, Japanese takes regular baths more than europeans, and europeans still believe in warlock healing and using leaches to suck out the EVIL inside of injuries, but Japan already have doctors who knows how to dress wounds and put medicines on wounds to kill bacteries...
-Official Seppuku = you die and you kill all your offsprings to prevent anyone from your lineage from continuing (kids and all). The wife is from the other family married into his family, so she dont need to seppuku.

The story is based on actual history leading up to The Battle of Sekigahra.
You may have already seen episode 2 which gives a little of the world context, but just in case.
Under the Taiko, Japan launched a failed invasion of Korea. This caused China to cut off all trade with Japan. The Portuguese act as "middle men" buying from China and selling to Japan. This trade monopoly is very lucrative and once a year the Portuguese Treasure Galleon sails out of Japan back to Europe via The Philippines. The Catholic Church has used this Monopoly to basically make the Japanese allow various Missionaries to come over and preach, converting many.
John Blackthorn not only represents a danger of the route to Japan getting out, but his Dutch ship represents a big problem for the Treasure Galleon.
Shogun is the top Military Ruler of Japan, and with the Emporer being a figurehead, it basically means the ultimate ruler.

    Oh forgot one thing:
Historically, the European Catholics came to japan like about 1400 or something, and it is about 1600 right now.... so Japan had Catholicism for like 200 years....
-Some Japanese believe in Buddhism, some believe in Catholicism, and some believe in Shintoism.
-But thanks to good old ODA NOBUNAGA (aka the leader before the TAIKO and now), who basically hated the Buddhist, he basically wiped out alot of Buddhist Japanese in Japan before 1600, so this allowed Catholicism and Shintoism to get a stronger foothold in japan.

The Portuguese (first Europeans) arrived in Japan in 1543, which means they have been there spreading Catholicism for less then 60 years making the fear that some Japanese daimyo had even more relevant. If they could spread their faith so much in half a century what could they achieve in 50 more years?

Yabushige (the lord who was challenged by John to rescue Rodrigues) isn't Lord Toranaga's brother - he's the uncle of Omi, the young lord who discovered the 'barbarian' ship. He was his father's brother.
