Pope John Paul II today (Monday) arrived in Papua New Guinea on the second stop of his 11-day Asian pilgrimage.
During his two-day stay, the pontiff will beatify Peter ToRot (TOE-rott) a religious teacher executed by the Japanese in World War II.
The pontiff's plane touched down in the capital Port Moresby and was greeted by thousands of people.
Warriors in feathered headdresses chanted and beat drums to welcome John Paul II on the second leg of his four nation Asian tour.
Despite recent illness and a hip replacement operation, the pontiff appears to be handling the heat and strenuous schedule well.
He was greeted by Governor-general Sir Michael Somare and Prime Minister Sir Julius Chan.
Security in Port Moresby was tight for the pontiff's visit. Police were trying to located two Iranian businessmen who disappeared from their airport hotel shortly before the pope touched down.
Despite the security scare, John Paul II traveled from the airport in the back of a white pickup truck with only a gold-coloured awning to protect him from the tropical sun.
On Tuesday the pope will beatify Peter ToRot, a lay preacher executed by the Japanese in World War two. Beatification is the first step toward becoming a saint. ToRot would be Papua New Guinea's first saint.
ToRot's beatification has caused a controversy. His remains have been moved to Port Moresby from the original burial site near an active volcano, which members of the Tolai (TOE-lie) tribe says violates their traditions.
About 1 (m) million of the South Pacific island nation's 3.5 (m) million people are Catholic and many came to the capital for a glimpse of the pope.
The pope will be in Papua New Guinea until Wednesday, when he heads for Australia.
