I love that attitude "HAY let me see if i can do it".. The satisfaction of making something useful out of raw materials never gets old to me. Re-purposing i find real satisfying.. I feel like i am not wasting resources in our all to throw away world today... Cheers on another enjoyable video.
Thanks Chuck, at the blacksmith guild, I just pick something off the floor or from the scrap pile, cut it apart or straighten it out and make something out of it.....Dave
What I greatly admire in you is: basic description of your daily task; your opening sections, firing up the shop/maintenance details. In the end .... no talk, just do. set up the camera, let the work speak for itself. CHEERS!! AHH.... and the rattling, clanking, popping, your tick-tock clock, steam hissing, ...YES!!
I love your shop, iust like being back 80 years ago in my grandfather's shop though it was a steel work's shop but we had some heavy machinery and ceiling transmission but a larger electric motor in my time already. Keep it coming thanks Old Bob
Great feeling to be able to go out in the shop and make something from scratch vs buying one, just because you can. I enjoy watching your videos. Thanks for your efforts David.
G'day, David! If you're feeling warm today, it's from all the love we're sending your way. Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year! "Keep Batting 'Em Out" (Used generally by switchmen when a yard engine is switching a string of cars) Cheers! :-)🎄🐶😊
One little trick I like to employ when fabricating an engine base from steel is to run over the entire surface with a needle scaler. The dimples on top of dimples that the needles make resemble a cast iron surface plus it hides grinding and welding marks.
Great job on making the base look like it was cast. The shaper did its magic again. As for the lathe dog, sometimes we just need to prove to ourselves we can do it. Been there, done that many times. Thanks for sharing your shop this summer and you will be missed over the winter. Merry Christmas.
Hi Dave, Thanks for the video, I always enjoy them. It Occurs to me, that I never spent this much time, watching a talented man beat his dog. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Along with the wonderful old machinery I see a machinist with a lot of knowhow and that only comes with lots of experience!! Merry Christmas and a wonderful new year!! Keep them coming.
Merry Christmas Dave. I enjoyed seeing you forge the lathe dog. I had spotted the forge and anvil around the shop and figured a certain amount of blacksmithing would have been necessary in a 1920's shop.
Man Dave that shaper is a killer piece of equipment! Wish I had something that could plane off a huge piece like that. Nice job on the base! Looks original.
Before I get started watching the video I love the entry photos you posted . Great introduction. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New year and Warm Winter. Now on with the video. ! Thanks for sharing your time with us.
Loved the new video.Having worked recip engines as well as jets for many years ,I'm just beginning to learn steam.I guess it's never to late for old dogs like me to learn as long as there are men like you willing to share their knowledge.I'm trying to get my grandson involved in engines and would love for him to see your channel, but he's going to be sixteen and thinks a lot of girls. There is steam on the lake out here as I have mentioned earlier.I'll try to remind myself to get picures for you this summer God willing.Merry Christmas , be well,do good things
Sounds like he might be a candidate for a model steam engine. The Stuart S-100 is still available in a pre machined kit I think. That's one that got my interest when I was about 12.......Dave
Good suggestion. We've got the tools and I'm trying to save him from his Ipad..We've got some old fishing boat motors that need work so I hope he won't mind getting his hands dirty. How do you teach hard work to todays youth?By example.Thats why I want him to see your channel. This is the first time he'll be turning wrenches and yes I'll pay him!
Thank you and all those involved in the content, efforts and production of this channel. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to all. May the new year bring you, your families and friends much health, wealth, happiness, safety, security, appreciation, respect and peace.
Hi :) Nice to see that lathe dog being made. To see red hot steel take its shape is magic. Have a very merry christmas and a happy new year from Norway
G'day Dave seasons greetings that base you made is terrific and does look cast. It was good to see the shaper used in a different way and what a great machine it did a beautiful job of that piece and I loved your close up shots of it. It was interesting to see you try and make a lathe dog they must have been really fit and strong to do it, I can only imagine doing that as a job when the temp is high like in the 40c. Thanks for another interesting video I love watching them kind regards John
An eye for detail, nice job on the base. Amazing what can be done on those old machines. With the invention of the Screw and adapting it to the Lathe things really took off. Keep-em coming... P.S. It's safe to say Merry Christmas so Merry Christmas and a Happy New year...
Smashing stuff ... loved seeing the manual approach with the tap. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you ... I hope Santa brings you something nice to restore!
Hi Dave, strange with no "Tuf-Tuf" sound in the back ground, I wish you and yours a Merry Chritsmas and a Happy New Year, looking forward to more "Tuf-Tuf" videos in 2018, All the best.
Thanks very much for the excellent videos, I enjoy watching them and listening to you. I loved that machine base - I think it looks factory! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Hello David, Very very nice! A specialy the old photo s at the start. You may need a forge. The best wishes for 2018. And a happy christmas. Greetings Henk
hi, it would be interesting to see the final product of the base without paint, septically the corners. I love the way that these machines work and also the yield which in the end has not much to envy to modern machines
nice work David. the base came out beautiful. i'd like to make a dog now that i see you made very cool example. thank you and Merry Christmas, Happy New Year!!!
Thanks Malc, I'm really not much of a blacksmith. Most of them are more like "artists", I hope spend some time getting better at making tooling, welding, heat treating and such.....Dave
My Father was like that Dave. I've never been much good at freehand things, you draw much better than me, but I wish now I'd taken more opportunity when I had it. My Great Grandad came to the smithy aged 5 and became the man of the village. He died aged 94 when I was 5. Grandad was also a blacksmith, lived next door. That's who I take after. He was clever and found it a very hard life. I definitely wouldn't have lasted, not build strong enough. With practice I suppose I would have become adequate, no more. But you'll enjoy it and very soon get much better at the hammering etc. Look how good you are at machining, you're like an artist at that.
I love that attitude "HAY let me see if i can do it".. The satisfaction of making something useful out of raw materials never gets old to me.
Re-purposing i find real satisfying..
I feel like i am not wasting resources in our all to throw away world today...

I enjoy watching the old machines and hand made tools ....Hope you have a MERRY CHRISTMAS
I thought I had seen all of your vids but the second time around I see I didn't. One of your best. Thank you.
That shaper is hypnotic. Like a big metronome.
This is such an impressiv Machinerypark
Hi. I'm from Russia. Constantly watch your video. I like steam engines.
Very pleased to have you along. Steam is good power...Dave
I love your shop, iust like being back 80 years ago in my grandfather's shop though it was a steel work's shop but we had some heavy machinery and ceiling transmission but a larger electric motor in my time already. Keep it coming thanks

Fascinating as always. Thank you for 35 terrific episodes. Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
One little trick I like to employ when fabricating an engine base from steel is to run over the entire surface with a needle scaler. The dimples on top of dimples that the needles make resemble a cast iron surface plus it hides grinding and welding marks.
Nice work on both jobs. Interesting way to make the dog - splitting a bar. Regards from Illinois.
Very educating Vid again. This is how dogs were made years ago. Lots of work for such a small necessary item. Thanks for posting. Merry Christmas
I love artistic metal shaping & design in all forms, twisting is my favorite .
So old dogs can make new dogs. Nice job!
For a machinist, that was an excellent piece of smithing! Merry Christmas, and thanks for all the videos.
Ha ha right...just don't have the "feel" man.....Dave
Great job on making the base look like it was cast. The shaper did its magic again. As for the lathe dog, sometimes we just need to prove to ourselves we can do it. Been there, done that many times. Thanks for sharing your shop this summer and you will be missed over the winter. Merry Christmas.
Hi Dave,
Thanks for the video, I always enjoy them.
It Occurs to me, that I never spent this much time, watching a talented man beat his dog.
Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Jerry, you know...it took me awhile to actually get that....Ha....I'm getting old....Dave
I had a set of those forged dogs once and didn't even realize what they were. Cool to see you recreate their construction. Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas Dave. I enjoyed seeing you forge the lathe dog. I had spotted the forge and anvil around the shop and figured a certain amount of blacksmithing would have been necessary in a 1920's shop.
John, Yeah and I'm just learning it....Dave
Thanks so much Dave, it is a pleasure watching you. Merry Christmas to you Sir.

Man Dave that shaper is a killer piece of equipment! Wish I had something that could plane off a huge piece like that. Nice job on the base! Looks original.

Thank you from denmark :-)
Merry Christmas to you and yours. Love watching, reminds me of when I was young and tradies knew how to do properly.

Take care, Dave! Welding arc radiation is dangerous not only for the eyes, but also for the hands and other open areas of the body.
